In response to Brendan (not that he'll ever see this) but first of all... You want a "Good, classy, cheap bar" haha. You sound real classy! Go to easy on E's (corner of East and Scio) try ONE on Ryans alley. Decible lounge right near the East and Alexander district. Walk up Monroe ave and find your assortment of bars, bug jar, O'callaghans, Oxfords, Sports page. You want a bumpin club? try maxwells on ridge East. you want country, try Daisy dukes or the roost. You want techno, the before mentioned ONE or Decible lounge. You want acoustic, try the before mentioned Bug Jar, you want what I call radio hip hop, go to Heat. Good Dj's, try Pearl lounge. You like gay bars, go to Avenue pub or Tilt. Lux is a pretty cool bar too. You want a good sports bar, rookies in chili (good quesadillas too!) You want a random assortment of every type of people, try taylors, woodys or woodys II. Comedy clubs? Villiage idiots improv, comedy club, and comix cafe if its still open (had 2 locations). I appreciate that everyone else mentioned all the great things people can do in Rochester that you dont have to be drunk for, but if thats the scene you're looking for, its in abundance here in rochester. And as far as being worried about getting shot by a 14 year old.. try leaving the confinements of Brockport and realize that Rochester is just another city. You think any other major city is any better? I'm a 24 year old, white, suburban, female, Rochester born and raised, and I manage to go wherever I please without getting harrassed, shot at, stabbed, or mugged. the worst that happens is a bum asks for a dollar and some scum bag thinks he can get your phone number. Mind you, both those things also happened to me in Dallas, Texas. I mean, you could always stay in Brockport at C&S or Stoneyard. :-) Hope this helps the younger crowd!!

There are adorable little towns right on the erie canal that have everything you could want from delicious restraunts to boatrides on the canal. Two towns i would sugest are the town of spencerport and brockport. Rochester is also known for the lilac festival in the spring. I love going to that every year and i would recomend it to anyone.

Wow, I feel I have to comment. I've lived in Rochester for 25 years, and think it is a great place with much to do. Let's start with the Rochester International Jazz Fest. One of best jazz festivals in the country. Hundreds of shows in small clubs with top notch players as well as the headlining shows at the Eastman Theater. Then there's the Geva Theater, one of the most sought after regional theaters in the country. Great shows in a great space. Like music clubs? Try the Bug Jar where you'll see national touring acts in a small unique venue (with an entire kitchen hanging upside down on the ceiling). Like larger club scene? Go to the Water Street Music Hall where you'll see bigger acts coming through in a larger (~1000 people) setting, plus they have a small club off to the side for smaller acts. Like the outdoors? Bike or hike along the Erie Canal. Miles of beautiful canal path both paved and gravel. It's especially pretty west of the city. There are hundreds of miles of hiking trails all around the surrounding area. Just south of Rochester is one of my favorite parks, Letchworth Park. Three beautiful waterfalls that I like better than Niagara Falls, because they retain their natural beauty in what is called the Grand Canyon of the East. The Rochester/Finger Lakes region is home to some excellent wineries and wines. Try them sometime and the countryside is inspiring. The Finger Lakes was rated the number 1 lakeside resort area in the world. I go downtown often and I never feel unsafe. Sure there are some bad areas, but there is nothing in those areas that would draw your average person there, so it's not an issue.

I could go on and on. If you can't find something interesting to do here, then you're simply not looking.

I've only lived on the outskirts of rochester in brockport. the college here has 8 thousand plus kids. all we ever hear about rochester is how its a ghetto dump, with jack to do. if you want to go to a bar and get shot then hit up rochester. news reports after news reports just list all the violence, and chaos that goes down in the city. when 14 year old kids are shooting officers in the head, you kind of wonder what type of streets your going to be walking down during the night. enlighten me with stuff a college kid can do besides stupid historical sights that none of us want to hear. You guys got any bumping clubs, any good classy CHEAP bars... you guys got any good comedy clubs, damn give me something

We discovered the Ontario Barn Festival this past weekend, just outside Rochester. This is a great annual outdoor, live music festival. And don't forget the finger lakes wineries are just 30 minutes away. You people are too negative. Positivity is needed if we want to lead people to come here and help our area grow and get recognized. And what about UR and RIT?? Great places!

One of the best things I experienced is a Guided Tour of Rochester that I found through the above website.
The tour guide was amazing taking us to a 2 hours tour. We learned so much and had so much fun. There is a tour guide on duty every day at 11 AM across from GeVa theater to start the tour.

In reply to the other post above.
If you didn't like rochester why the hell did you stay here for 39 years!
Your dumb!
There is plenty to do if you look outside of historical attractions!

I lived in rochester for 39 years and I can say that there is nothing to do there. Once you have done the 10 things you mentioned now what? The weather alone prohibts any out door activities. You get 1-2 days of sun and the rest are dark and gloomy skies. Not to mention the endless months of cold/winter. That filthy and polluted lake and that cesspool you call a beach in charlotte cannot even be used if you had good weather. The city has a look that it's caught in a time warp that has not evolved with any creativity in any way. There is more destruction than growth. Look outsided the "box" and see what there is out there before you settle to the vice grip of Rochester before it's to late.

I can't believe you didn't list Nick Tahous as a place to purchase garbage plates. Where do you think garbage plates originated! Nick Tahous Hots!!! The one downtown is better than the one across from Wegmans on Lyell Ave in Gates. The one downtown has the good original meat sauce and so on. The poster before me is wrong, there are a lot of things to do in Rochester, but us Rochesterians don't always see that because either we've done it all here or we are kids and don't want to go do some of the more enjoyable things that us adults or older teenagers or seniors would enjoy. Anyway, Rochester is a great place to live and visit, have fun!
