The original plan was to stay in a campground in Grand Isle, VT. I had gone online and had been researching KOA campgrounds, and I thought there was one on Grand Isle. I liked the KOA campgrounds as they offer free Wi-Fi, and also have the option of cabins (or Kabins as they call them). When we got near Grand Isle, I did a find on my Garmin GPS for campgrounds. But it didn’t show a KOA. We stopped at a gas station and asked about the KOA, and they said there wasn’t one. And they said the state campground didn’t open until the next weekend. Hmmm. The sky looked like rain was coming. We were considering a motel. But most of the motels here looked small and old. Norman Bates/psycho material.
I asked how far Shelburne was, and they said about 45 minutes. Hey, no problem. We stayed at a campground there 12 years ago. As we got near to Shelburne, it was raining. There were a bunch of hotels/motels here. With the rain, we thought it would be nice to stay in a hotel. We stopped at the Travel Lodge who’s sign proclaimed indoor heated pool and free wi-fi! Way cool. It turned out they only had smoking rooms. We decided to pass. We drove up and down the strip and there were lots of hotels. I had an idea! We went back to the Travel Lodge, parked in there parking lot, and I booted up my laptop computer. I got a wi-fi connection!!! Way cool! I connected to Priceline, and Orbitz to look for hotels in Shelburne for the night. The cheapest hotel was well over $150!!!! Ouch!!! We had seen a small motel across the street advertising single rooms for $39. We stopped there, but they were booked. I turned out there are three graduations in the area, and everything is booked!!!! We finally dove down to the nearby campground. The office was closed but the sign said find an empty spot, and come to the office in the morning. They even listed the open spots. I decided to get one with electric power so I could recharge my laptop. The campsite with power hookup cost $26.
We had to set up our tent in the rain, but that was better than paying a fortune for a smelly smoker room that we are just going to be miserable in anyway.
