1 comments about Short Bike Rides in and around Washington D.C..
- As a new resident of Washington D.C., this book, "Short Bike Rides: Washington D.C.," has become for my family an invaluable introduction of the area's numerous bike trails and routes. Each route is introduced with a short synopsis of its main attractions and challenges, followed by precise yet easy to follow directions. The book was obviously well researched.

1 comments about Mount Washington and the Presidential Range Trail Guide (AMC Hiking Guide Series).
- This book has lots of details about the region, but its advice about boots and backcountry hazards is, shall we say, incomplete. They imply that if you have strong ankles (I do) that you can wear "lightweight boots, somewhat more sturdy than sneakers" or even sneakers if your legs and ankles are strong. So I wore running shoes. The trails are rarely walkable paths but are more often "sight paths" between cairns across thousands of sharp and abrasive rocks- rougher than most trails I've encountered in the Rockies and Sierra Nevada. Sturdy boots are therefore a must, but this book does not say so. Regarding the backcountry hazards, not a word is found about the high winds. On the 2nd day of summer, we found ourselves on an exposed ridge with hurricane force winds, fog, and 34 degrees. In some places we had to crawl else the wind would knock us over. If you're blown off the ridge, the steep slopes and cliffs of the ravines are there to "greet" you as you take your final plunge. A revision of this book is urgently needed- one that will provide proper warnings about this very dangerous area and that will give better advice about boots and other gear.

1 comments about Finding Wildflowers in the Washington-Baltimore Area (Johns Hopkins Paperback).
- This book is a neccesity for anyone looking for fantastic wild flower sites within driving distance of the D.C./Baltimore area. It is co-written by Chris Fleming, field botanist with the Maryland Natural Heritage Program and popular teacher of Wild Flower I.D. at the Audubon Naturalist Society in Chevy Chase, MD. Each site is described by the wildflowers you can expect to see in every season and directions are given as well as any info needed about gaining access to the site. Learn where to see one of the largest stands of Giant-flowered trillium (Trillium grandiflorum) you will ever see or visit the only known site in Maryland to observe the beautiful Fringed Gentian (Gentiana crinita). This book will keep you busy for many weekends of wild flower exploration.

1 comments about Hoh River (Steelhead River Journal, 3).
- Authors of fishing books must run straddle a fine line between selling books and perhaps not giving away their favorite places to fish. There is not nearly enough information in this book. Mr. Probasco's coverage of flies is pretty good, but it is pretty apparent that he did not spend that much time on the river. The only map found in the book is close to useless. If you are looking for a "turn left at the forked stump and use an "x" presentation" book you are better off with "Flyfisher's Guide to Washington" by Greg Thomas. While Mr. Thomas doesn't cover the Hoh in great detail either, by the time you are done reading about the Hoh, Queets, Sol Duc and Bogachiel you will have a pretty good idea of how to fish those rivers. Mr. Probasco's book does have some beautiful pictures in it.

3 comments about Mountain Bike Adventures in Washington's North Cascades and Olympics.
- Be careful if you buy this book. It is 10 years old and many of the trails have been closed.
If you are looking for a place to start in Washington it covers almost the entire state.
- There are some great rides in the 2 books he wrote. This is some kind of bible for the washington state. Be aware that those books are 10 years old!!
- I don't even know why they still sell this book. Almost half the rides are either closed to mountain bikers or have since been turned into sub-developments and no longer exist. This book is actually quite depressing. It was sad thumbing through the pages remembering all the great trails that used to exist that don't anymore due to development and/or land usage disputes. Basically, if you buy this book, you will have to call your local bike shop to confirm whether or not the trail still exists or if it has been modified...so, what's the point?

1 comments about Facts, Myths and Maybes: Everything You Think You Know About Catholicism but Perhaps Don't.
- Facts, Myths, and Maybes is an excellent source book for much of the disputed areas of Roman Catholicism today. It is an extremely easy read, and fairly easy to digest. Although at times I feel Deedy lingers on the liberal side of things, I enjoyed the insight he offered. It is a scholarly work, but I was quite disappointed at a lack of references and foot notes. There were a couple of times I noticed that Deedy's theology may be flawed. Nonetheless, FMM is great to have around to answer some daunting questions. It doesn't replace the Cathechism nor is it intended to. A better read for Catholics than for non-Catholics seeking information.
