  1. In The Footsteps Of George Washington by William G. Clotworthy is combines a brief and unusual biography with a travel guide to some 300 publicly accessible sites associated with the life of America's first president. From his birthplace and childhood home, to sites associated with his business, military, and political achievements, In The Footsteps Of George Washington is a unique compendium which is especially appropriate for vacationers seeking to get in touch with the personalities, events, and places most closely associated with the founding and development of the American nation. Indeed, the travels of George Washington took him from a frontier settlement in the Potomac Valley where he worked as a surveyor, to his military battles up and down the Atlantic seaboard. George Washington visited more of what was the united States during the years of his presidency, than did any subsequent American president during the 19th century. It was only with the technological improvements in transportation that 20th century presidents would match the travel accomplishments of our Founding Father. Also very highly recommended is William Clotworthy's other book: Homes And Libraries Of The Presidents: Second Edition and Presidential Sites: A Directory Of Places Associated With Presidents Of The United States

  1. Other guides may be useful for vacationers, but if you live in the DC area and have kids, this is the book to own. It comprehensively covers kid-friendly places from the classic (Glen Echo Park) to the relatively new (Exploraworld in Columbia). My mom had an earlier edition of this same book thirty years ago when my brother and I were growing up, and we both recommend it highly!

  1. Considering moving to Spokane or somewhere in Washington? Consider Spokane! It's a larger, more progressive than what most people think, and drier than the Western side of the state City of about 500,000 people including the surrounding areas....how did I know all of this before moving up? By reading this book. Get insights into neighborhoods, demographics, stores, restaurants, things to do, annual events, etc. You'll feel like you know the place when you finally get up here for your first visit which will save you hours. Call the visitor's bureau, which is listed in the book, for a relocation packet, too. I wish there were an updated version.

  1. well if you are very limited on time the best way to see washington has to be the tourmobile you can pick it up at union station and get on and off all day for 25 bucks a person (35 for a 2 day pass) this guide was a buy and easy to carry. you can go to all the major monuments for free and the changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier was impresive and moving this book and all the frommers portables are great in my experince.

  1. Dougls Lorain has gone out of his way to be sure backcountry travelers make the most of their time. From avoiding the less than scenic parts of the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail), to providing clues for off-trail/cross country opportunities, it will be difficult to go wrong with the candid advice from Lorain. Like Rick Steves has done for adventure minded European travelers, Doug Lorain provides more than most backpacking/trail book authors. An excellent book for GORP eaters who may be ready to enjoy the backcountry thru the backdoor.

  2. Doug Lorain has done a wonderful job with this book. I've hiked extensively throughout Washington, and still found this book inspirational. All of the trips described in the book are lengthy backpacking trips. A wonderful job was done linking trails together, providing great, detailed, honest assessments of the route/terrain/difficulty of each trip. Best of all, the book is a joy to read (high praise for a guidebook). Even when not planning a trip, you'll enjoy thumbing through it, dreaming of future trips. A must have for anyone who wants to plan a great backpacking trip in Washington - period.

  1. As a former resident of Washington, I wax nostalgic for The Evergreen State with terrific frequency and was thrilled to come across Exploring Washington's Backroads by John Deviny. Deviny wisely draws on historical anecdotes, facts, and experiences to share the uniqueness of Washington's towns and regions. In so doing, he captures, quite successfully, the state's spirit, which encompasses landscapes and, importantly, people. Deviny takes the road less traveled by typical tour guides. His distinctive use of storytelling pulls readers into an engaging, not to mention engrossing, journey through misty mountains, rivers, dense forests, and high-desert country. The writing and photography are exquisite and promise to pull you into a great armchair adventure. If you are planning a trip to Washington, want to know more about it, or enjoy reading stories about real places, real people, and real roadtrips, YOU WILL LOVE THIS BOOK!

  2. Was very excited to receive this book so I could hit the highways and do some exploring. The excitement ended when I opened the book.

A book on backroads that contains maps without road markers, that's right maps with dotted lines showing the routes, yet none of the routes are marked on the map. The author does give ordered route directions (take a right on 91, left on 87, ...), you just can't find this information on the map.

The photos make me want to stay at home. Another book, The Most Scenic Drives in America makes me want to drive all over the country ... check out that book for a few good drives around Washington. Save your money on this one.

  3. Fantastic review of our beautiful state. Made me feel as if I were on the road experiencing the unique beauty of each area. I've given this wonderful book as a gift over and over. Hope the author will write more!

  4. This author's writing style is creative, articulate, and excitingly different from other travel writers. I feel like I'm in the passenger's seat with him, enjoying the scenery and sharing a few laughs together. Having taken several of the trips described, I've discovered parts of Washington that were completely new to me. This book has given me a unique appreciation for the various faces of Washington State.

  5. This is a beautifully crafted "travelogue" that will be enjoyed by the adventurer or armchair traveler. It makes a great host/hostess gift or a thank you to a teacher, doctor, or anyone you'd like to treat to a beautiful ride through Washington. I keep a stock of them on hand and every one has been appreciated by the recipient. Pack a lunch and grab your keys or pour a cup of coffee and sit in your favorite chair-either way you'll enjoy this book.

  1. I loved the trail selection and maps in this book. A good concentration of hikes/walks on the Eastside. (Not like other books that try to cover all of Western WA hikes in one book and only mention one or two hikes on the Eastside). Would have liked more detailed information on the hike, such as surface (e.g. paved, bark, gravel, etc.), accessibility (e.g. stroller/wheelchair) and a little bit more detail on exact trailhead locations (using same language found on trail head markers). Several trailheads were hard to find using the instructions in this book.

  1. Generally good content on fun things do with children in the Seattle area. Few overall maps make it less practical for "in-car" use and for non-Seattle natives who aren't terribly familiar with the regions. Organized by type of activity, so it doesn't answer the question of "what's interesting to do around here or nearby?"

  2. If you're moving here with kids, take the time to skim this book all the way through to get an idea of what sort of things you can find here. Then when you want a particular activity, you can look it up again.

  1. as a recent transplant to seattle & a new dog owner, i love this book. it maps out about 10 walks to take in different neighborhoods- fremont, queen anne, the international district, etc. and lists the time each should take as well as a wealth of information. there are features on buildings you'll see, maps, suggested parking places, and more. it's much more interesting than your standard guidebook that just lists museums & stuff.

  2. I AM NOT A RESIDENT OF SEATTLE, BUT I VISIT AS OFTEN AS I CAN. I HAVE READ THIS BOOK WITH GREAT ENJOYMENT. IT IS VERY INFORMATIVE AND EASY TO READ.

  3. As a newcomer to Seattle, I have made good use of this book. When searching for a place to live, it really gave me a taste of each neighbourhood. The walks are fun and informative, with accurate maps, great layout, and something to interest everyone. So, if you are kean to learn the history of Seattle neighbourhoods, this book is a must.
