  1. These two books are the bomb(S). The directions and the descriptions of the rides are spot on and most importantly the selection of the rides (if you like truly remote, tough, and stunningly beautiful adventures) is tremendous. My copies of these books are dog eared with love and mud. Trust me you cannot go wrong with these books - and I've biked all over the country - or biking in the Pacific Northwest July - Sept - Amazing! Too good! Be prepared for some long drives from Seattle (2hrs each way) but the memories will last much longer. Enjoy! I hope Zilly goes on to write books for the rest of the country...

  2. I wish all guide books were as well researched as this one. Each hand drawn map has GPS waypoints on it plus all the major features and a reference to the USGS/Green Trails Map. Locations of nearby campgrounds and supplies. Plus a very nice rating system so you don't get in over your head. There are 2 maybe 3 overlapping trails with the "Kissing the Trail" book but that's ok. Wish I had thought of having a career of riding my bike and writing a book about it. Way to go John.

  1. What a great book! It is refreshing to read a historical guide that doesn't take itself too seriously. On This Spot brings the sights and history to life for us transplated Washingtonians. While the book can be used as a walking tour guide, it can just as easily take you on a tour through history from your living room. Makes me feel like I am in Washington again!

  2. I LOVE THIS BOOK!! i love learning about the little trivia type things. And this one is full of them. Now I just want the same thing for other cities.

  3. This book is wonderful. There are places pointed out in this book that are not pointed out anywhere else. If you are going or live in DC please buy this book and use it as you walk around.

  1. "Undercover Washington" is unlike any other travel guide I've seen. It covers all of the places in Washington, D.C. and surrounding suburbs in Maryland and Virginia where spies lived, loved, worked, and defected. The book covers spies and espionage throughout history from George Washington to current events. This is a fun book for locals and tourists.

  1. Authors of fishing books must run straddle a fine line between selling books and perhaps not giving away their favorite places to fish. There is not nearly enough information in this book. Mr. Probasco's coverage of flies is pretty good, but it is pretty apparent that he did not spend that much time on the river. The only map found in the book is close to useless. If you are looking for a "turn left at the forked stump and use an "x" presentation" book you are better off with "Flyfisher's Guide to Washington" by Greg Thomas. While Mr. Thomas doesn't cover the Hoh in great detail either, by the time you are done reading about the Hoh, Queets, Sol Duc and Bogachiel you will have a pretty good idea of how to fish those rivers. Mr. Probasco's book does have some beautiful pictures in it.

  1. Whenever I travel to a city I'll be staying in for more than a few days, I check to see if a pop-out map is available. I purchased this one on a trip to Seattle for a week last year.

These little maps easily fit in a back-pocket or breast-pocket, and fold out easily while on the go (could be done one-handed if needed). The map includes:
    - an overview map of Puget Sound and Seattle area
    - Greater Seattle map
    - Downtown Seattle with insets for Pike Place Market and Pioneer Square
    - University of Washington Map

It's all crammed into a small package that's great to use. The beauty is that you don't have to spend hours folding a map away and looking like a complete tourist. Pop the map out, use it to find out where you're headed, and slip it back into a pocket. Can be very quick (if you are semi-familiar with the area after a while). Love it for quick bus-rides, etc., where you have a few moments to pull out a map and find out if you're headed the right way.

  1. I moved to DC two weeks ago and went a week without this map and now a week with it. What a difference! At first, I was using a hodge-podge of metro foldouts, museum maps, and visitor guides. It was do-able, but messy and confusing and all the folding and unfolding was annoying and quickly dog-eared any maps I had.

I saw this pop up map in a store and got it because I thought it looked cute, but its dang useful and I take it everywhere, which it is small enough to do.

    This is why its awesome:

    - its sturdy and made with a cardboard cover that protects the inner maps
    - its small and folds up to fit in a back pocket or purse, but expands to a nice size
    - it has a full metro map on the back cover (exactly like the ones found on the trains)
    - no folding! It pops out and pops back in, takes 1 second
    - makes great use of space, a map on every surface except the front
    - detailed with great information on the Mall area only on one map
    - detail of old town Alexandra w/ bus routs and detail of Georgetown
    - index of streets and places of interest with map coordinates on back of fold out maps (which makes them a little awkward to read)
    - $6.95, how could you go wrong?
    - dang it if it aint cute

Some things it might be lacking:

    - it does not cover all that big of an area, but it gets 95% of what a tourist will visit
    - no info on city buses at all, just metro trains
    - the street maps shows the metro stops but not the lines of the routs
    - it does not show where the outlets of the metro stations are, for example some metro stations are very large and have two or more outlets on different streets. This is small thing, but I had a map with this info on it and it was surprisingly very very useful

Even with these things "missing" I still gave it 5 stars because its super useful, nice looking, easy to read and use, and all for only 7 bucks! Also, they made great use of space on the map and if they added all of those things it would be a confusing mess or wayyy bigger. I just mention them to make you aware of its limitations.

  2. This map is great. I have a wedding coming up and I intend to purchase a map for every person coming in from out of town. This map is easy to navigate, small and easy to carry, contains metro information, streets, hotels, points of interest, shopping, and restaurants. It is so handy! I recommend this for anyone planning a trip to DC.

  3. Used this map for our vacation to Washington DC this summer. The fold out maps are detail and informative and on 2 scales so you both see the area map as well as the large city. I liked that the Metro stops were on the maps and that there was a separate Metro map on the backside. Fits easily into a shirt pocket or pants pocket.

All of the Monuments and Tourist sites were well marked and shown with a walking distance scale.

  1. As a long time DC area wedding professional, I can state with confidence that there is no other reference book, magazine, or website in the area that has a more complete listing of locations for weddings (or any other party for that matter) in the entire DC area. Ms. Dunkins reviews are right on the money! This book is invaluable, especially for those planning long distance weddings or those who may not be familiar with the area.

  2. I was looking for a spot to host an informal event, and it seems that most of the locations recommended here cost at least $700. Which is all right if you're planning a state dinner, but don't spend your money on this guide if you're planning anything cheaper than black-tie.

  3. This book certainly has a lot of different reception locations, but it could be one-quarter of the size if it didn't keep repeating the same locations 2,3,4,5,6 times in the same book (just in different section)! The reviews were also very blunt with no real description of the location. The author also gives only flattering comments to every location, some of which turn out to be no so nice at all!

  4. I was disappointed in the book because of the duplications throughout. Most entries I had already come across on the web. It's also missing a big chunk of the wedding market that resides in the Frederick, Maryland area. It makes me wonder if this isn't just advertisements for those who were willing to pay to have their businesses listed.
