5 comments about Newcomer's Handbook for Moving to and Living in Seattle Including Bellevue, Redmond, Everett, and Tacoma.
- this is good comprehensive resource for those moving to seattle. its full of useful information. i used it to read about different neighborhoods, figure out where to buy furniture, how to set up my phone, and get general information about the city from across the country. its great
- This book was too much info just thrown together. There seems to be no diagram for organization. The info that is documented is not what I had hoped for. It reads more like a novel than a handbook. The maps provided are too small & undetailed. The overview is all right. The author does give useful numbers & websites. But there was too much about moving to & not living in Seattle. I was hoping for some real insight into Seattle. Moving is going to be intense. The book does not offer enough info on the ins & outs of the TRUE Seattle.
- I am enjoying this book immensely in preparation for a "scope it out" trip my husband and I are taking with our toddler in a few months. Yes the info could be found elsewhere with endless hours of research, but in this book is is right at my fingertips and is well written and organized.
- I purchased this book for my son when he moved to the Seattle region. I was concerned some of the information would be outdated because it was published 3 - 4years ago. My concern was not warranted! The book offers extensive information on everything one would need when moving to a new place. From things like where the post office is in each regional area, to the process for voter registration, to home costs, school information, motor vehicle requirements, and on and on.
Wonderful book for a newcomer to the Seattle area and the state of Washington!
- I purchased this book when I was moving to Seattle (naturally) and it was certainly worth the money I spent on it. It was a handy reference guide to the things I would need to do once I moved, as well as a directory of information about places, shops, malls and other kinds of services that are are necessary and useful.
However, since most of the same information is available on the Internet, I would have appreciated a critical assessment of various aspects of Seattle life described in the book. For instance, I would have preferred something like "ABC and XYZ malls provide the best quality of service" as opposed to a listing of addresses and telephone numbers of twenty different malls.
Still, there is a lot of useful information and advice in this book, and I would definitely recommend it.

3 comments about Hiking Washington's Geology (Hiking Geology).
- This is a great book outlining interesting geology in Washington State, and offers suggestions of which hikes should be done.
- This is an excellent read! The book highlighted some outstanding hikes and I learned lots about the interesting geology of the PNW. This book is a must for any hiker in Washington!!
- Hiking Washington's Geology is a well-written, informative book that describes the geologic evolution of a wide and varied landscape. I especially appreciate the detailed directions on how to get to the trailheads and equally detailed descriptions of things to look for while hiking. This book is a must-have for anyone interested in the geologic natural history of Washington....

4 comments about Day Hike! Central Cascades: The Best Trails You Can Hike in a Day (Day Hike!).
- Mike is a talented writer and Central Cascades is another great guidebook by him. As with his other books this has come with me on many trips.
- This book is well written, but the maps are not the best. Also, some of the photos are blurry and could be much better. Its not a bad book and provides another point of view, but Beyond Mount Si: The Best Hikes Within 85 Miles of Seattle is a better book overall.
Normally the Day Hike! books are very good, but this one seems to need a revision with better photos and maps.
- This is a great book of hikes in the Central Cascades (where I live). While I am already familiar with many hiking trails, the recent birth of our daughter means shorter, easier hikes in our near future and I purchased this book to refamiliarize myself with the trails I learned to hike on.
The book provides a basic guide at the beginning to help you pick hikes by geographic location or by difficulty and the authors subjective rating of the hike. Each hike has a page or more of information, starting with a brief summary, directions and key details, tips or warnings. For example, Franklin Falls is a great hike for beginners - except - there is a potentially difficult and dangerous rock slope to navigate at the end. The author warns of this which is fantastic - I knew from experience that this hike would appeal to less mobile hikers only to present them with a potentially impassable obstacle at the end.
Each hike also includes a basic topographical map that provides a very basic overview of the hikes path as well as an indication of elevation gain. Since this is a book of day hikes I see no need for a full topographical map and none is provided - a criticism of other reviewers that I do not agree with.
Overall this is a very good book minus one glaring issue. There are two hikes missing. I'm not sure which they are, because they are on the overview map but not in the book. A minor issue since the book is packed with hikes but it still disappointed me.
- I started hiking early this summer, and this book has been my constant guide. Green Trails offers map bundles that include a copy of this book, so I guess I'm not the only one who thinks it's pretty good.
Pros:
- The large geographical range of the book. It covers hikes as far north as Mount Pilchick, and south through the Steven's Pass area to the I-90 corridor and Snoqualmie Pass. It also has several trails in the Issaquah Alps and North Bend area, which is a treat for someone who lives in Bellevue like I do.
- The summary section provides good information about the hike. It covers pretty much everything you need to know: distance, elevation gain/max, difficulty, accessibility. The presentation is very clear, unlike some other guidebooks that bury this info either in a small box, or worse, a long rambling description. It even gives helpful notes like whether it's suitable for kids or dogs.
- The descriptions are well-written, just the right length, and the author's style is engaging. McQuaide's writing inspired me enough to attempt even some of the more difficult trails--I give him credit for my victory over Mailbox Peak!
- The book provides topo maps of the immediate area. As the other reviewer said, for a day hike there's not much need for a full topo map. [Although just to be prepared you might consider getting one; they are inexpensive.] Full topo maps can be large and bulky, but the smaller maps provided are perfect for minor orienting tasks.
Cons:
- The selection of hikes is not comprehensive, but rather give more of a general feel for the area's possibilities. If you want a fuller catalog, you might want to get a copy of Day Hiking: Snoqualmie Region (Done in a Day).
- The quoted hiking times can be way off sometimes, though for the most part they aren't bad. I realize that the time you take to hike a trail depends on your own ability and how much time you spend at your destination. But sometimes I finish in less time, sometimes I take longer--it's not consistent. Online guides (wta.org, attrition.ws, Getaways in the Seattle PI) are more helpful when judging how long a hike will take. (Trust me, I've gotten into major trouble when a supposedly 6-hour hike took more than 7 hours.)
All in all, this is a great guide. If you're thinking of hiking the wonderfuland that is the Central Cascades, I highly recommend that you get this book. Have fun!

1 comments about Touring Washington and Oregon Hot Springs (Touring Guides).
- This is a useful guide to the NW's hot springs with maps, pictures, and descriptions of facilities. I was a little disappointed that it focused so much on established and well-known hot springs, as I was looking more for off-the-beaten path options. As most of the hot springs in the book are in Oregon, it will definitely be more helpful for a resident of or traveler to Oregon versus Washington.

1 comments about Hidden Hikes in Western Washington.
- There are stacks of hiking books available for Western Washington, and some are even touted as "hidden" hikes (they aren't) but Karen Sykes has written the real thing. These are hikes that for whatever reason don't attract the hordes that commonly hike the most common trails. Many of them are "secondary" hikes that either don't have the splashy payoff commonly associated with the most popular hikes; but many more hikes are special by virtue of their history or their charm. These are hikes for those who miss the adventure of trying the unknown. And because Sykes is safely conservative in her recommendations, the reader can feel assured that the conditions will be no worse than expected.
For armchair hikers, the book makes good reading.

2 comments about eat.shop washington dc: The Indispensible Guide to Stylishly Unique, Locally Owned Eating and Shopping (eat.shop guides).
- I was in DC for business for several weeks and I took this book with me everywhere! It's a must for people who are not interested in all of the tourist hot spots and really want to see what DC has to offer. This is my second eat.shop book and I have never been disapointed by any of the shops or eateries. It will be the best travel guide you'll ever buy.
- This 'book' is more like a pretty pamphlet listing small restaurants, boutiques, shops, etc. The 'book' is about 4" by 4" big and it has one page with a variety of photos and on the facing page a list of a few items that denote what the author thinks is special about this shop, restaurant. Pretty catalog - not an informational book.
