  1. As a child growing up in Washington DC, I had the privilege of meeting Bryson Rash at the old WMAL Studios at Military Road & Connecticut Ave NW during his "Tailwaggers" show. At that time in the late '40's early 50's, he would launch into one of his historical anecdotes which would leave even jaded native Washingtonians in bewildered awe.

This book is pure gold! No amount of mentoring or preparation for the DC Tour Guide licensing credentials would ever reveal the pearls contained within in its covers.

For those with any interest at all in the wonderful stories associated with this town outside of mainstream tourism, this volume is a must! Enjoy.

  1. Did you know that the tallest totem pole carved from a single tree stands beside the Columbia River in Kalama, Washington? Chief Lelooska of Ariel, Washington began carving the 140-foot, 20,000 pound cedar log in 1961, and finally presented three totem poles to the City of Kalama. You can see them tower against the sky from I-5.
Kalama, Where Highway, Rail and Water Meet is packed with gems of historical interest: the drama that surrounded the moving of the county seat from Kalama to Kelso, the boom that came when Northern Pacific Railroad chose Kalama as the western terminal from Duluth, Minnesota, and the bust that followed its determination to transfer the terminal north to Tacoma. Photographs accompany descriptions of early settlers and prominent families, private residences, churches, and businesses. One section separates fact from folklore, with colorful anecdotes about Elvis Presley, Theodore Roosevelt, the Kansas contingent, and the Chinese laborers who built the railroad. The book ends with a guide to current restaurants and services, including an impressive list of antiques dealers, and a yearly calendar of events. Every August Kalama celebrates its roots: The Days of Discovery recognize John Kalama, a native of Hawaii, and his wife Mary, daughter of a Nisqually Indian Chief, as founders. Kalama arrived in the area as an employee of the Hudson's Bay Company, and his carpentry, farming, and trapping skills led to his name being given first to the River, and then to the town. A must-have for those interested in Pacific Northwest history. #

  1. This is one of the best written and researched books out there. The respect that Dr. LeWarne gives these communities helps bring out their achivements and their follies. A must-read for any local historian or person interested in Western History.
