4 comments about Newcomer's Handbook for Moving to and Living in Seattle (Newcomer's Handbooks).
- The latest edition of THE NEWCOMER'S HANDBOOK FOR MOVING TO AND LIVING IN SEATTLE is a book intended for people moving to the area, but even people who are not going there may enjoy it. It describes in full the best and worst neighborhoods, schools, shopping, dining, and fitness opportunities in the cities of Seattle and Tacoma, as well as their surrounding suburbs. This book is more up to date than the last edition, so it's worth checking out and getting rid of your old edition.
- This book was most complete of any I have seen so far, author certainly must have deep knowledge of Seattle area. Lots of tidbits that were completely unexpected!
- The book is filled with lots of info, though I don't think it is much more updated than the older version (also very useful)
- This book has served as an outstanding relocation-tool during our move to Greater Seattle region. It's well-organized and provides thorough information for multiple neighborhoods. The author covers various aspects of everyday life, such as neighborhood profile, commute, schools, dining, and shopping etc. Although it covers suburbs of Bellevue, Redmond, Everett, Kenmore, Bothell and Tacoma etc., but the coverage for suburbs is not as extensive as for the city of Seattle. I wish the author had covered Eastside in a little more detail.
I would rate the material "Five Star", but deducting one for no color, few maps, and no pictures. The author has done an amazing job, if the publisher can follow some style elements for color and pictures from DK Publishing, it could make this guide an undisputed leader. Even after living for a year in Seattle suburbs, I still use it as a reference document and every time I learn something new and interesting. For example, I recently learned about the business partnership between Seattle PI and Seattle Times, and where does the NE (North East - e.g. NE 145th St.) starts etc.
I strongly recommend this book to all new comers to Seattle area. If I ever decide to relocate again, I will never do so without buying any such guide as it certainly makes learnings straightforward and relocation a little less stressful.
PS: I personally own the 2nd edition, the content for both editions is worth every penny.

2 comments about Not for Tourists 2008 Guide to Seattle (Not for Tourists Guidebook).
- Amazing breakdowns of the neighborhoods - color maps, lists and locations of businesses and more. Nice glossy pages and more info than a short-term visitor could ever use - we bought it as a relocation guide and it has paid of in dividends for us! It helped us decide on which neighborhood to live in, helped us find businesses and services, and showed us fun places to eat and hang out. Use it for visiting but remember that it is also a fantastic book full of info to help you move to Seattle!
- I gave the book, 'Not for Tourists' as a gift and it was received with much interest and delight. The book is very informative, covering various districts in and around Seattle. The information is very detailed and acurate, with good readable maps, great information about the many areas that it covers and a fun book to browse through. I've lived in Seattle for many years and it was great fun reading through this delightful book. I will be purchasing 'Not for Tourists' for my self.

5 comments about Rediscovering God in America: Reflections on the Role of Faith in Our Nation's History.
- I recommend this book to everyone. It taught me so much about our countrys history and the very important part God has played in developing our great country. A must read for all concerned citizens.
- Once again Newt knocks the ball out of the park. One of the largest single issues facing America right now is the left's desire to take us on a path divergent to what our founders desired. One of the most important pieces of this nation's foundation is the morals and values brought by our religious heritage. This was extremely important to our founding father's and Newt points this out concisely.
- Newt Gingrich's "Rediscovering God In America" (2006, 160-page hardback) is a great walking personal tour book for finding Christianity in Washington DC's monuments and government buildings. The final 18 pages presents a walker's map of DC and over 40 photos of the book's locations.
This is a great tour book. Speaker Gingrich describes the historical backgrounds, religious foundations, and architectural presentations for the National Archives, Washington Monuments, Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Viet Nam Veterans Memorial, the Capitol Building, the Supreme Court, and much more. The author's research also offers interesting colloquial stories for each location. Gingrich is an intuitive and persuasive historian.
Everyone visiting these sites will want to have this pocket-sized text with them. This book is recommended to all interested in America's religious foundation, our nation's capitol, government architecture, and those soon to tour Washington DC.
- Well, I liked the book. I have only been to Washington, DC twice, and each time I saw different monuments. But this book covered the monuments I have and have not seen, and with a perspective of showing the Godly influence on our nation. It makes me want to go spend a few more days in DC. I think Gingrich did a good job at drawing together speeches, historical context, and a walking tour of DC monuments. What would you expect from an historian?
It was good. I would have liked it to be longer.
I thought the section on FDR was remarkable. As was the section on the Viet Nam memorial.
My favorite quote of the book: "The rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God." -- John F. Kennedy
- I highly recommend this book! This is a great book for the coffee table, commute, green room, waiting room...anywhere, anytime. Gingrich conveys the rich faith of our founders and their intentions on recognizing God for His providence in the affairs of this blessed country. REDISCOVERING GOD IN AMERICA takes the reader on a concise historical journey of previous generations' marks of faith impressed on Washington, D.C.'s iconic institutions (i.e. White House, Jefferson Memorial, Capitol Hill, etc.) EVERY home and classroom in America should have a copy of this book! It will serve to offset the sweeping, and wholly inaccurate, historical revisionism that happens in most textbooks in our public schools and inform the next generation what a great country this still is and why. NOTE: Apparently there is now a corresponding DVD--which I'll be purchasing next. If it is even a shadow of the book, it will be a wise investment!

3 comments about Streetwise Seattle Map - Laminated Center City Street Map of Seattle, Washington - Folding pocket size travel map with integrated monorail & streetcar lines & stations (Streetwise).
- Before heading into Seattle as an intern this summer, I bought a few foldable maps - each with different strengths and weaknesses. By the end of the summer, the only map living in the front seat of my MINI Cooper was this one. I love it because the streets are clearly labeled. I love it because it shows some of the surrounding neighborhoods, not just the main downtown area. And most of all, I love it because it shows the on and offramps for the freeway. How many times have you hit a bizarre interchange and not known what lane to be in, or been stuck in a maze of one-way streets? This map is absolutely the clearest at indicating directionality of streets, and that's a good thing because Seattle is a pretty messy city to get around in by car.
Combine this map with one of the bound King/Pierce/Snohomish County "map books" that are sold at most big box stores in the metro area with detailed grid maps of the entire area, and you'll never get lost. Highly recommended!
- Covers the subject well but far from completly. Handy to carry because it is a small book. Nice color illustrations. Points of interest chosen would sit well with people in their 20's but no so well with people in their 60's
- Only half the size of a regular map, for twice the price. The lamination and mini pictures of buildings don't make up for the disappointment I felt when I received my map in the mail. I'm sure it will prove useful, but in a much smaller area than it should or could be useful.

1 comments about Frommer's Seattle 2008 (Frommer's Complete).
- FROMMER'S SEATTLE 2008 is a great new version of Frommer's great guidebook on the Emerald City. It tells you about great shopping, dining, exercise, recreation, and sightseeing. It does miss a lot of the malls, as well as lacking anything on local radio stations, so be sure to get the new version of LONELY PLANET SEATTLE in February, as well as FODOR'S SEATTLE 4TH EDITION, THE NEWCOMER'S HANDBOOK FOR SEATTLE, the new version of BEST PLACES SEATTLE, and THE SEATTLE GUIDEBOOK, 12TH EDITION, in addition to this one.

5 comments about Washington, D.C. (Eyewitness Travel Guides).
- A very clear guide book. Well organized with helpful facts and photos to help identify buildings and key contents. It proved most useful.
- Another success for the DK Eyewitness series. Well thought out, with the excellent graphics that are DK's hallmark. Well indexed, user friendly, and pocket sized. As a DC resident I own a lot of DC guidebooks; this is the one I'd recommend first, to both visitors and new arrivals alike.
- For the first time visitor to Washington, D.C., this book is invaluable. With it's excellent descriptions and insights, grasping a sense of the city's many offerings is easy and fun. But what truly sets this book apart from other travel guides, are the unique and informative full color layouts of the city streets, complete with 2-D images of the buildings for reference. It's nearly impossible to 'get lost' with this guide in your hands!
- I usually love the DK Eyewitness Travel Guides, which may have raised my expectations of this one on Washington, DC. There could easily have been an extra twenty or thirty pages - or am I just being greedy?
As I live in Australia, I thought Washington DC would mean the entire capital. The book mainly focuses on the areas along the Potomac, such as the Mall, Georgetown, and Foggy Bottom. Areas such as Dupont Circle and Kalorama have been relegated to the 'Further Afield' section, which I found disappointing.
There's quite a good section on the White House and the beautiful buildings which surround it, but again I was left wanting more.
It's still a beautiful book though, and the photographs are clear and crisp, but there just wasn't enough for this armchair traveller. I guess I'll have to get out of my armchair and experience Washington DC for myself. At least this travel guide has whet my appetite!
- First Eyewitness guide and I love it. Wish it was a bit more up to date.

2 comments about Fodor's Washington, D.C. 2008: with Mount Vernon, Old Town Alexandria & Annapolis (Fodor's Gold Guides).
- FODOR'S WASHINGTON D.C. 2008 is a great book about the Washington D.C. area, covering both the city itself and its Maryland and Virginia suburbs, including Annapolis, MD and Arlington and Alexandria, VA. Whether you're traveling to the area, or are simply proud of being an American, this book is for you.
- This guide was very informative. It included all dimensions of the DC area in an organized fashion. The map was convenient to use. School chaperones used this book to gather the details they would need for the recent student tour of the city.

5 comments about The Unofficial Guide to Washington, D.C. (Unofficial Guides).
- Bought this book because I wouldn't go to Disney World without the Unofficial Guide. Several errors. Should have mentioned the Circulator. We took a family of 4. The review on several attractions - including the International Spy Musuem contained too much of the author's own political agenda. There were not enough family oriented and reasonably priced restaurants reviewed. I discovered I was only a couple blocks from a lot of good restaurants, but couldn't figure out, from this book how far they were. I would buy the other books before this one.
- What I liked: the review and description of the museums and the breakdown of public and tour transportion options. Other than that I feel I was missing out on a true city experience. The restaurant reviews were all over the place (and I think it could use more selection; or perhaps a map for the walking tourist to find great places to chow). No sense/description of the neighborhoods. How about good places for music/culture? Not included here. I would have also appreciated some pictures. All in all, it helped with a trip but I was disappointed.
- The first half of the book deals with background information, which is relatively unnecessary; while the second part is much more useful. You can plan which spots you are gonna visit and find out the hours and touring tips. If the book can focus on that, it will be much slimmer to carry.
- I used this book on a recent visit to see some friends in D.C. They work during the day so I knew I'd need to entertain myself. This book was great for info on tourist sites. I love that it gives the closest metro stop and other things to do nearby. The restaurant reviews were also helpful. It gave a great explanation of the metro system so I felt quite confident buying tickets. The maps were adequate (not spectacular), and I can't comment on the lodging info since I stayed with friends. My friend was so impressed with my info that she kept the book. I guess I'll have to borrow it back the next time I visit.
- This book proved itself utterly invaluable on our recent American History vacation in and around Washington DC. I can say that this small investment brought at least 50 times its value back in cost and time savings. If you are planning a trip to the DC area, you owe it to yourself to pick this resource up and buy it at least six months in advance or preferably sooner. The currency of this book seems perfect and I found no errors in it whatsoever.

5 comments about Streetwise Washington, DC Map - Laminated City Street Map of Washington, DC.
- This map was a great help when we were in DC - the detail was fantastic and it was easy to tote around. The enlarged detail for the national mall was extremely helpful
one small detraction - the print is small - so be warned
- When I moved to DC I had only been there one additional time, my job interview! My friends got me a guide book for moving to DC and this map. It saved my life the first trip to DC on a weekend, and it helped me explore great dining since I knew how far it was to walk or Metro. I love this map so much I know have one for most cities I visit, like Manhattan!
- Map is extremely small and difficult to read. It did help but, it was not easy to use, especially while driving when information is needed rapidly.
- This was the best source for helping us maneuver through the maze of buildings, monuments, and memorials in Washington, DC. The map is very functional. Flip it one way and you see the Metro, flip it another way you see the mall, still another and you have a DC area map. Since it's laminated, I kept it in my pocket while walking around and didn't worry about it getting sweaty or damaged. I really like the detailed names of the buildings and monuments near and around the national mall. Metro stops and streets are well marked. The next best thing to GPS.
- We used this guide everyday of our trip to Washington, DC. The subway guide was especially useful. I never felt lost, and didn't waste any time trying to figure out where to go. It was such an important thing to have each day, we double checked each time we left the hotel to make sure we had it. I highly recommend it.

5 comments about Revolutionary War On Wednesday (Magic Tree House 22, paper).
- COME ON PEOPLE! First of all this book and the entire series is meant for KIDS NOT ADULTS so go with the flow. Imagine you are a boy or girl who is 5 or 6 and is just starting to enjoy stories and reading. You will love it! The whole point of a book is to have children begging for more. This book and the series does just that! ENOUGH SAID! My 5 yr old loves this book and as a result he has become interested in American History. This appetite he has led us to purchase many more books on history. In my opinion, the book has accomplished what I wanted. AN INTEREST IN LEARNING! AN INTEREST IN HISTORY! AND AN INTEREST IN READING! The text should be simple! The text should be silly at times! Thank you to Mary Pope Osborne for creating a wonderful series which I believe has turned my child into a history buff eager to learn everything about America!
- My 1st grader hates to put it down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. In his kindergarten class the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not to give her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!
- Revolutionary War On Wednesday (Magic Tree House 22, paper)This book was a great way to introduce our daughter to the American Revolution. While she completed it within a few hours, I would highly recommend it along with American Revolution: A Companion to the Revolutionary War on Wednesday (Magic Tree House Rsrch Gdes(R))To start studies for homeschoolers, or to have a great set of books that help explain Why the American Revolution began. The resource guide has the true facts of the Revolution and is something we returned to several times throughout our studies.
And at the price it definitely was an added bonus!
- My four year old son is in love with this chapter series! A friend suggested it to us since he seemed ready for a more advanced reading material at bedtime. My husband reads him a chapter every night...sometimes more because they don't want to stop. It's become a great tradition for them, and something they both look forward to. We love that there are so many in the collection! Start with number 1 and just continue. :)
- Our boys, 5 and 7 love the book series. It is informative on various
subjects and creates their curiosity to know more about for example the Civil War.
