  1. I think this guide gives complet information and is not too big to handle.
It includes an extra map. It will lead us perfectly through our 2-days-stay.

  1. This is a fascinating book. Page after page of "before-and-after" photos comparing old time "Washington" to modern-day "DC." The book covers the four quadrants of the city (NW, NE, SW and SE), as well as many suburban areas (once self-contained communities which have been swallowed up by the metropolis that modern-day Washington has become). As a native, I was surprised at how many of the "before" shots were familiar -- and the flood of bittersweet memories those "before" pictures brought back in terms of how dramatically Washington has changed in just the past 30 to 40 years -- not to mention the past 130 years, which is how long ago some of the "before" pictures were taken. As this book proves, in many cases the changes have been for the better: poor neighborhoods rehabilitated; ghettos replaced by substantial housing; cowpaths paved; a much-improved Potomac riverside; etc. In other cases the changes are simply heartbreaking: the once highly livable Southwest area of the city demolished and replaced by, frankly, some of the most hideous architecture and freeway systems imaginable; the once inhabitable downtown area of Rockville replaced by concrete "bunkers" of remarkable ugliness; streets once full of people and shops giving way to block after block of monotonous office buildings. It's almost impossible to remember that Tysons Corner, Rosslyn, College Park, Upper Northwest, Chevy Chase, and many other bustling metro areas were once charming (dare I say "sleepy?") little bergs. It's also sort of humorous to note that such highly congested areas as the "intersection" of Lee Highway and Route 66 (in East Falls Church, Virginia) were equally "congested" way back in 1898 (albeit with horses and buggys instead of cars, vans and 4-wheel drive vehicles)! In any event -- and whether or not one feels the changes have been for the better or the worse -- all of the photos are top-notch, and Mr. Penczer has painstakingly based the "after" pictures on the originals. A million dollars worth of memories for a mere $19.95 -- go get it!!

  1. I was in DC for business for several weeks and I took this book with me everywhere! It's a must for people who are not interested in all of the tourist hot spots and really want to see what DC has to offer. This is my second eat.shop book and I have never been disapointed by any of the shops or eateries. It will be the best travel guide you'll ever buy.

  2. This 'book' is more like a pretty pamphlet listing small restaurants, boutiques, shops, etc. The 'book' is about 4" by 4" big and it has one page with a variety of photos and on the facing page a list of a few items that denote what the author thinks is special about this shop, restaurant. Pretty catalog - not an informational book.

  1. There are some stores, restaurants, grocery chains, etc that are not shown in this book. In that sense, don't expect this to be "everything you could possibly need to find". However, for the most part it is very simple to use, clear maps (though when there are maps with 3 coffee shops on a single street, it's difficult to tell which is which as they are not numbered) and enough info to be a great resource for people moving to the area.

  2. I just moved down to DC, and this book has been incredibly helpful. When I initially decided to move down, I purchased Mike Livingstone's Newcomer's Handbook, which was incredibly helpful, as it gave in-depth descriptions of the neighborhoods (an invaluable resource in deciding where to live), but the book lacked good maps to navigate by. NFT features great maps of the neighborhoods, but little other descriptions, which has made it an invaluable resource, once you were familiar with the basics of the area (metro stops, education, night life, etc.). I have found it very helpful for finding grocery stores, navigate myself towards the metro, banks, and others. I would recommend this to any newcomer to DC! (But only 4 stars because it is not an exhaustive resource).

  3. This is a really great book for anyone that lives in DC, or the area immediately surrounding DC. There is a lot of great reference information in here in addition to the very good maps.

  4. I recently moved to this area and finding my way around, where to shop, etc. has been difficult. This book has been a great resource. Whether you live near DC or are just visiting but like to find things off the beaten track, this is a great book. I love the maps. I do wish the metro stops would be shown more clearly though. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars.

  1. Elisabeth Frater's lovely travel guide is great for both residents and visitors. I have lived in Northern Virginia for 13 years and don't even drink alcohol, but I found this book to be useful. Frater gives clear, concise information, but also offers opinions. You hear the facts about each winery, but you also here the stories behind each one.

I have enjoyed living in this area much more after using Frater's book to plan weekend trips. Her book was invaluable when family came to visit recently.

  2. Comprehensive review of the wineries in Virginia and Maryland. Describes how each of the wineries got started and a bit about the owners, growers, and/or winemakers. Also offers a brief summary of the wines produced. Includes sidebar-type sections on such topics as individual varietals, wine festivals, and competitions.

A wonderful resource if you like weekend getaways, beautiful farms, and, of course, sipping wine! Indispensable for budding regional wine connoisseurs and casual travelers alike.

  3. Book arrived much more quickly than I expected...especially it being over the holidays. Great information. A lot of recognizable wineries, close too! Good purchase.

  1. This is a great guide to the sights and museums of Washington DC. The maps and descriptions of the sights and museums are excellent. The metro map on the back cover is very handy, and the detailed maps of the sections of the city are useful and easy to read. This is not a guide for hotels and dining, although some coverage is given.

  2. This book has the National Geographic glossy quality and lot of great information! We picked this up for our planned trip to DC. I will update this review when we take the trip. Well, we did the trip and we liked the pictures and information but I found the DK book better for current information and had additional information that this book did not have ....but it was still a good book to get a preview with.

  3. I have already written reviews on other National Geographic Traveler Guides on Ireland ( Dec 4,05 ), San Francisco ( Jan 3,06), Interstates Crossing America (Feb 5,06 ),and California (Aug 23,06 ). I have given many reasons why these are excellent guides ;and after looking through the miriad of guides on the bookshelves, you won't be sorry if you choose National Geographic. They are of the highest quality and construction and make a great memory of your visits and on top of that the design and format is consistant. What you have to realize is that they are excellent as a guide to the history and places to visit. This is where Nat Geo shines over the others. This guide would also be a teriffic value to those who live locally or even as a reference of the areas and places for whatever reasons. In reading or following news ,it will be turning to them often. With other travel guides, one often discard after the trip , as they are generally mainly heavy on
Accomodation,Restauraunt and other information that quickly becomes outdated, printed on cheap paper and with minimal information and pictures, maps, drawings and information.
National Geographic are hard to beat in what they do.They are showing it again in Travel Guides.
