  1. There are some stores, restaurants, grocery chains, etc that are not shown in this book. In that sense, don't expect this to be "everything you could possibly need to find". However, for the most part it is very simple to use, clear maps (though when there are maps with 3 coffee shops on a single street, it's difficult to tell which is which as they are not numbered) and enough info to be a great resource for people moving to the area.

  2. I just moved down to DC, and this book has been incredibly helpful. When I initially decided to move down, I purchased Mike Livingstone's Newcomer's Handbook, which was incredibly helpful, as it gave in-depth descriptions of the neighborhoods (an invaluable resource in deciding where to live), but the book lacked good maps to navigate by. NFT features great maps of the neighborhoods, but little other descriptions, which has made it an invaluable resource, once you were familiar with the basics of the area (metro stops, education, night life, etc.). I have found it very helpful for finding grocery stores, navigate myself towards the metro, banks, and others. I would recommend this to any newcomer to DC! (But only 4 stars because it is not an exhaustive resource).

  3. This is a really great book for anyone that lives in DC, or the area immediately surrounding DC. There is a lot of great reference information in here in addition to the very good maps.

  4. I recently moved to this area and finding my way around, where to shop, etc. has been difficult. This book has been a great resource. Whether you live near DC or are just visiting but like to find things off the beaten track, this is a great book. I love the maps. I do wish the metro stops would be shown more clearly though. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars.

  1. My family and I recently took a trip to DC, and brought along this book. It had lots of great tips on what to see and where to eat. We've used the "Boston" version of the book for years, and I was glad to see that the "DC" version was just as helpful.

  2. Got as a gift but spent time reading through.
Looked like it gave great suggestions for teachers too on what to visit and where to go while on field trips.

  3. We are traveling to Washington, D.C. and this book is going into our suitcase as a reference while we are there! We have really enjoyed reading it and learning about Washington, D.C.

  4. Purchased prior to our first trip to D.C. The kids enjoyed reading it as much as we did. Was a great help in planning our days in D.C. Recommend using this and Frommer's Washington D.C. with Kids (Frommer's With Kids), especially if travelling with children in a range of ages as our were--7, 9, and 16.

  1. This is a big clear map. The only downside is that at times it's a little TOO big. The map covers a lot of area outside of DC proper and makes it occasionally difficult to pinpoint exact locations if you only care about the more central areas of DC.

  2. This map is extremely comprehensive. One side covers all major and minor roads in the Annapolis, D.C. Fredrick, and Virginia area and highlights roads that are very good for biking (large shoulders, smooth pavement). The other side has D.C. and there is still one more blowup of the heart of downtown. It is very detailed, has all roads clearly labeled, and shows the good bike paths, trails, and designated roads and bikeways in the city. If you want a map of D.C. for anything related to driving or biking, or looking for metros stops, this is the map to get. It is well worth the price ($9).

  1. I think this guide gives complet information and is not too big to handle.
It includes an extra map. It will lead us perfectly through our 2-days-stay.

  1. The current Timeout 2004 guide for Washington, DC has really good coverage of DC art galleries; in fact it is the only DC guide that offers any decent "guiding" to Washington area galleries.

It is written by Jessica Dawson, who also pens the "Galleries" column for the Washington Post.

She has a good introduction and even lists her favorites for 2004 under "Names of the Game."

Jessica nails it when she recognizes in her intro that a new "optimism" is kindling a really good art scene in the Washington, DC region.

Unfortunately, throughout the pages dedicated to the galleries, and as it is to be expected, there are quite a few comparisons to New York this, New York that all over the place.

And reading through Jessica's descriptions of the various galleries also offers an honest and rare insight as to how this critic evaluates and views (she seems to have something about "safe art," whatever that is) most of the Greater Washington, DC region's art galleries. For example Dawson praises Zenith Gallery's Margery Goldberg for her "tireless activism," but describes the gallery as "while influential in the neon art scene, consistently shows mediocre painting and craft."

Addison/Ripley is praised for selling "high-calibre paintings, photography and prints," but "their selections, while lovely, are awfully safe."

Cheryl Numark is "Washington's power dealer", while Leigh Conner shows work by the "kind of cutting-edge artists that Washingtonians usually travel to New York to see."

MOCA is "DC's answer to the hip, alternative galleries of New York."

Fraser Gallery (which I co-own) "concentrates on photography, but occasionally shows innovative sculpture and work in other media," while our Bethesda outpost is a "bright, glass-walled gallery [that] exhibits realist painting and photography."

Hemphill Fine Arts "plays host to many of Washington's strongest artists," but "the art here tends towards the decorative."

Fusebox is "sharp and savvy," and has "raised the bar for visual art in Washington," and their openings are "events to see and be seen at."

    Anyway... Bravo Timeout!
