  1. For a book on art museums - the photos are pretty darn poor quality.
As a coffee table book - you would be embarassed.
Of course if you are really into museums, and I admit to be, there is some content here worth reading. However, it definitely could have used an editor. It reminds one of Mark Twain's "I didn't have time to write you a short letter, so I wrote you a long one." As in we hurried this out to market, put little effort into it, and hope it will sell to well-heeled customers that won't care or have much time to read it anyway.

So for those that LOVE the subject matter - 3 stars, for those that are only mildly interested - beware.

  2. Schwarzer deftly gathers threads from many sources, weaving together a beautiful, inspiring tapestry of museum work. Perhaps what is most fun about this book is that you'll find your own history here... waiting in line as a teenager to see King Tut, going on a field trip to see Juno the Transparent Woman at the Cleveland Health Education Museum, or recognizing a favorite diorama from these richly illustrated pages.

The book is coffee-table beautiful, while its soft-cover price makes it affordable. The gorgeous design showcases the amazing photographs, unearthed from a variety of archives. The photos bring the text to life, as Schwarzer spins tales of brave souls dedicated to the craft of museums. Schwarzer clearly loves museums, warts and all, and she showcases how museums and interpretive sites have served America by saving our culture, teaching hundreds of thousands of children, showcasing diversity, supporting the war effort in World War II, and healing spirits after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. A must-read for anyone in the museum (or cultural) field.

  3. If you want to learn more about museums in America without getting museum fatigue, this is your book. It is a good read, wonderfully informative and offers rare insight into the factors that made American museums what they are today - not just the broader social/historical context but also the individuals and colorful personalities. The text, photos and quotes are all chosen with care and the book is beautifully produced while being affordable.

  1. well if you are very limited on time the best way to see washington has to be the tourmobile you can pick it up at union station and get on and off all day for 25 bucks a person (35 for a 2 day pass) this guide was a buy and easy to carry. you can go to all the major monuments for free and the changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier was impresive and moving this book and all the frommers portables are great in my experince.

  1. This is my second summer living in Washington, DC during an internship and about my fifth time here. I have visited just about every major site that is accessible by public transportation, and some that aren't. I bought this book because it includes a blurb about the history of some of the major sites, sidetrips into Maryland and Virginia and lots of decent restaurants for a student on a budget. Perhaps it includes a bit too much info on traveling to DC (how to get there, visa info, etc. etc.) but it's a guidebook for the outsider primarily.

  2. I've been fortunate enough to have used Lonely Planet books throughout Europe, Australia and parts of North America and have always found them reliable and accurate. However, the Washington DC edition falls quite short of the LP standard that I have become used to.

First of all, of course the information on attractions and especially security is vastly out of date, but more importantly, there were more than a couple recommendations that I followed in the guide that led me to a closed bar (twice), a bad place to eat (three times), and a REALLY BAD hostel recommendation. What was said in the guide to be the best hostel around turned out to be the worst one I've ever stayed in.

There were far more popular guides with the people I met, the Let's Go being the guide of choice. Having used the LP to some frustration, I would recommend using an alternate source of info for your trip to the Capital.

  3. I have been living in DC for the past 2 years and bought the LP as a gift for a friend. As a resident, let me tell you ... this guide falls MUCH below expectations. Published in 2001 Feb, it does not take into account any of the new security regulations, road closures, etc. Futhermore, the listings for restaurants, bars and clubs is not only prehistoric, but also very "old-school" ... none of the hip DC places are included. I would supplement this by checking Washington Post's website - they are much better. Cheers,

  1. Like the other Lonely Planet Condensed books this one is a day pack must have. It's small enough to be able to stick in a pack or a back pocket but is filled to the brim with useful information on what to see in DC, where to eat, how to get there (excellent maps including details on the Metro), and where to lay your head at the end of the day. We picked this up on a whim but found that it helped us narrow down the best sights and points of interest for Washington, DC when we only had a few days to stay. Well worth the very reasonable price and you'll have no trouble finding the highlights and the hidden treasures of the capital.

  1. A brand new edition of this unique guide to getaways in the tri-state region, including the Baltimore-Washington corridor. Well researched and laid out in easy-to-use sections that profile one trip each, this book covers Virginia's Blue Ridge, the Tidewater, the Shenandoah Valley, Chincoteague, Charlottesville, Central Virginia and the Eastern Shore. Maryland's favorite spots on the coast, in Baltimore and Anapolis, and to the West are also covered. In addition to the best places to stay and the finest spots to dine, the book is packed with things to do that will rekindle a romance... or get one started in the first place. Local cultural festivals, winery visits, carriage tours, balloon rides, plantation tours and more.

  2. "... [a] unique perspective on traveling as a couple, pointing out places where privacy is paramount, lodgings offer special romance packages, and [places on] the Eastern seaboard to sneak a kiss."

  3. "Wraps up lodgings (including many inns), restaurants and attractions in appealing weekend getaway packages.... A nice attention to detail."

  4. "The authors introduce travelers to lesser known treasures of Maryland and Virginia."

  5. "This is the ultimate guide to romantic weekend getaways.&quot
