  1. While this guide isn't bursting with information about each plant, it offers a quick guide to many of the trees and wildflowers that one is likely to find in Virginia.

The guide is long and thin shaped with only a few pages. It's made of coated thick paper (or if you prefer, thin cardboard).

  1. Sea Kayaking Maryland's Chesapeake Bay: Day Trips on the Tidal Tributaries and Coastlines of the Western and Eastern Shore
by Michael Savario and Andrea Nolan
    and
Sea Kayaking Virginia: A Paddler's Guide to Day Trips from Georgetown to Chincoteague by Andrea Nolan

Savario and Nolan are professional guides who have written two delightful guidebooks for kayak day trips in the area of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. The books document trips the authors have made a regular part of their itinerary and are written in a narrative style that is not only informative but makes for a great armchair tour for those nasty winter days as well. I found both these books at my local library and liked them so well they had to become part of my personal library. Enjoy!

  1. The book has many beautiful photos & maps, and contains an abundance of historical, statistical and general information increasing its overall value. As a new resident of Virginia and one who loves to explore I strongly suggest this book because the directions are very easy to follow, it is packed full of very helpful and insightful information and it contains a large variety of places to visit and activities to do.

  2. Bruce Sloane has produced a handy, detailed, and helpful guidebook that should be in the glovebox of every Virginia motorist who likes to explore the beauty and history of this state. The directions are clear, the research is solid, and the choices of itineraries are interesting and imaginative. This is a perfect book for weekend meandering and sightseeing in one of the most scenic and historically rich states of the USA. As a bookseller (I have a bookshop in rural Virginia) I know that this book sells itself when customers look it over. Since it was published in August, it has quickly become a best seller in our shop. If you live in Virginia, or plan to visit there, Don't Leave Home Without It.

  3. I live in New Zealand and was going to be visiting Virginia in October. I ordered this book through Amazon and it arrived in NZ long before I left for my trip to the USA. I found the book very useful to sort out the places I would like to go to, how to get there and the sort of things I was likely to see while I was there. The reason I have only given 4 stars, is that the back cover states that there is an 8 page colour section of pictures in the book, and my book had none. I was very disappointed as they would have been a lovely record of my holiday.

  4. On the front of this book it clearly states 'With Color Photographs by Jeff Greenburg'. Don't be misled. ALL the photos in the book are black and white and of poor quality.
    Very disappointed.

  1. I have checked this book out at the library looking for 'GOOD' photos of some of the older homes and the resconstructed homes from the 1700's. The photos are absolutely breathtakingly crystal, clear, show wonderful asthetic views, and give a simple and linear time frame of ownership and construction/demolition, reconstruction of many of the homes in the Williamsburg area. This book is worth every penny if you buy it for research and historical purposes. Of all the books on Williamsburg that I have ever read (dozens and dozens), this one is the most excellent!

  2. As a big fan of Colonial Williamsburg, I purchased this book years ago. The story of the restoration is really interesting. The beautiful photographs capture the essence of the story--so it's a nice "coffee table" book as well as an engaging read.

  1. My wife & I travelled the Blue Ridge Parkway to North Carolina to photograph waterfalls. This book was indispensable and formed our principal reference and tour guide.
An excellent value at twice the price

  1. I live in DC and it's difficult to find a good ride without taking an afternoon drive. This book is really thorough and helpful, with places I wouldn't have otherwise known about and more info than I already knew about other places.

  2. This book is pretty much a joke of a guidebook. Most of the "trails" are things like bike paths and not really mountain biking... It pretty much misses all of the great trails in Maryland

  1. I have read a number of different books on where to fish in the Virginia area and loved the coverage here. I typically do not go back to the same place in the same season in order to spread the pressure. David's book provided a large number of options that allow the reader to go to a new place each week and still have places left over for the next season. He includes hatch charts, directions as well as local references on hotels and restaurants. The info is up to date with the 2006 revision. Good work!

  1. Mountain Bike VA is an excellent book for the mountain bike enthusiast or just someone who enjoys biking at a more leisurely pace. Divided by VA Counties; each ride has detailed instructions on how to reach the trailhead, associated costs, distances, type of trail, difficulty, a trail diagram which includes a trail terrain profile, a couple of pictures and a witty, descriptive narrative. Well worth the minor cost and then some. I highly recommend it.

  2. I found the format of this book to be quite useful. Trails are divided into geographic regions with detailed instructions on how to get to the trailhead. Each trail in the book has a standard trail map, an elevation map (useful to gauge the trail's difficulty), some text to give more detailed directions, and other trail details such as parking fees, whether or not you can bring your dog, etc. Don't buy this book if you are interested in riding in the Lynchburg / Bedford / Roanoke area as it seems the author has not spent a great deal of time in this part of the state. Otherwise, Northern and Eastern VA are well covered.

  3. This book is well organized and detailed. I have not been lost due to bad intel and have thoroughly enjoyed each trail so far. The difficulty ratings are fair, too. The lists of 'best rides' at the beginning of the book that go beyond geography are very nice.
