2 comments about Hiking Virginia.
- As I've stated many times, the quality of falcon guidebooks varies immensely. What's more is that even when its from the same author it's inconsistent. Such is the case with this book. The Falcon Guide: Hiking North Carolina (also written by Randy Johnson) is a good book, yet for this book the author has done a very poor job.
The route descriptions are especially lacking in details. As are the trip difficulty scales, not to mention the author completely bypasses mentioning water sources. I don't have any recommendations on general hiking guides to virginia but if the appalchian trail is your cup of tea then look no further than Exploring the Appalachian Trail: The Virginias. That series of books is far more detailed than any of the falcon guides for the area. You'll actually want to take those books to the field because they will do more than just get you to the trailhead and no more like this particular falcon guide does.
- I chuckled at Icapote's review of this book. Duh- if you want an index to water sources on the Appalchian Trail, then buy the Appalachian Trail Guides for heaven's sake! This book does not list all the state's trails or water sources, but it is an inexpensive overview of the state's best trails. It's been really useful and informative for me.

3 comments about Country Roads: Albemarle County, Virginia (Country Roads).
- I was very disappointed with this book which was sorely in need of editing! It was a laborious read at a time when I was searching for something both useful AND enjoyable! Without photos accompanying the descriptions of various locations within Albemarle County, I was left with a bland sense of what these places actually looked like. I had to rely on the power of my own creative imagination to visualize what was being presented. Architectural photography would have encouraged me to visit Albemarle County as I would be better able to recognize the sites referred to in the book.
- Takle a lazy afternoon and meander down these tours. You'll learn much about our past, the history of Albemarle County and yourself as you read about the roads and homes still here. Obviously this is a fun thing to do WITH someone since you can't read and drive at the same time!
- We have had many pleasant afternoons cruising Albemarle with one of the children as a designated reader. With the suburbanization of the Virginia countryside, this is a great reminder of the way things were and the people who lived here before us. It should be updated and expanded!

5 comments about Day & Overnight Hikes in Shenandoah National Park, 2nd (Day & Overnight Hikes - Menasha Ridge).
- I thought this book was the most comprehensive of its kind. The two weeks I spent in the park were enhanced by the knowledge and experience of the author. I recommend this book to anyone who is thinking of exploring Shenandoah!!!
- I like the format of this hiking book the best. A very easy to read and follow guide with just the right amount of side discussions. Maps are nicely done without too much detail and the book is narrow enough to fit in a pocket. I wish all hiking guides would use this format. The selected hikes are well thoughtout and cover all regions of the Park.
- I barely have time to hike, much less shift through a thick, overdone guidebook. Molloy's guide is the perfect size. It saves me time, accurately detailing specific hikes to lesser known destinations with exact directions to the trailhead and good maps. It's all I ever need to explore Shenandoah National Park.
- Molloy obviouly spent a lot of time at Shenandoah because all the hikes he picked were winners (at least all those I have gone on so far!). This book tells me just what I want to know: the hike, distance, difficulty, and hiking time. Even better, it gives me a running commentary about what I am going to see on the hike, so I don't miss anything. And it fits right in my pack! I really like the directions to get me to the trailhead. I can pack up and be on the trail in a jiffy. So if you are looking for just the right information (in our era of information overload) Molloy's book is for you.
- This book is very portable (slim and easy to carry). While it includes day hikes in the first section, the second section is great if you are planning to hike (and camp) for more than one day. Not only does it include trail descriptions, mileage, it also offers advice on how many miles to do per day, etc. I did find one "error" during the Hazel Mountain day hike section (the mileage in the text doesn't match the mileage in the description) but that's not major. Overall, GREAT BOOK!

2 comments about Shenandoah: Views of Our National Park.
- Moore says that his "Mountain Days" at Shenandoah, in every season, "have brought me the park's blessings and enriched my spirit forever." His special eye, facile art and heartfelt words in this precious book evidence his love of the park and bring Mountain Days to us all, spurring us to make our own visit in our own time.
- Hullihen Moore shares his co-passions for nature and box photography in a compelling journey through Shenandoah Park. Moore's patience for "just the right moment" is obvious.Incredible detail invites the viewer to touch a droplet of water or listen for the crunch of fallen autumn leaves.Other photographs present an ethereal quality which offers amoment of hallowed beauty. Do not skim the pages of this book---savor each delicious creation
