- If you are just visiting Virginia Beach for a few days, this book has a lot of information that you don't need and not much of the information that you do need. There are no detailed maps and very little tourist type info. Despite the title, this book covers a much larger area than just Virginia Beach. The restaurant guide is very good, and it is obvious that considerable effort was expended in compiling all of this information. If you are considering a move to Virginia Beach, this is an excellent resource. Otherwise, another travel guide that includes Virginia Beach would probably be a better bet.
- I'm thinking of moving to VB area, and this book has lots of basic info on the area, including neighborhoods, beaches and the like. The author does live in the area, so she seems to know what she's talking about. However, I feel that she held back from offering opinions, saying this beach is cleaner and less crowded than that beach, for example. I have since tried quite a few of the restaurants she lists, and all of them were very good! The best book about VB I've been able to find.
- There are not a lot of books out there on VA Beach or the Hampton Roads. Believe me, I've looked. Most travel guides concentrate on the state of Virginia as a whole and information on the Hampton Roads area is pretty sparse.
This is why I am thankful for this book. "The Insider's Guide to Virginia Beach" is actually much more than just a travel guide to Virginia Beach. It covers the entire Hampton Roads region including the cities of Norfolk, Chesapeake, Suffolk and Portsmouth as well as the Chesapeake Bay. Topics covered include the area's overview and history, restaurants, accommodations, shopping, attractions (including kid-friendly activities), recreation, daytrips, real estate and neighborhoods, schools, healthcare and more. At over 300 pages, it is packed with useful information that you just won't find in your standard Virginia travel book. I highly recommend this book to travelers who want to concentrate on the Hampton Roads/Virginia Beach area or those who are planning to relocate there. I've shopped around for books on Virginia Beach and this really is your best bet. If you are interested in visiting several areas in Virginia, then I would also recommend the "Moon Handbooks: Virginia" or "The Virginia Handbook." However, if you plan to spend most of your time in the Virginia Beach area, then this book is a must have.

1 comments about Buildings of Virginia: Tidewater and Piedmont (Buildings of the United States).
- What you get here is the architecture of Virginia and the expertise (and lovely writing style) of Richard Guy Wilson. Really, what else could you ask for? The ensemble of structures covered here is diverse and distinguished. The critical skill of the author is unmatched. As far as architectural guides to historic structures go, this is about as good as they get. A truly outstanding ensemble of historic structures skillfully analyzed by THE authority in this particular field. I only wish he'd gone further west. Winchester! Lexington! Roanoke and Lynchburg! And of course, little Fincastle. There's so much left to be done!
Three cheers for the comprehensive survey of Richmond, a gem of historic architecture.

1 comments about Collecting With Vision: Treasures from the Chrysler Museum of Art.
- First of all the physical description of the book. It's slightly too large for a pocket type guide and to small for a catalogue. The pages are glossy with some excellent photos. Considering the collection that this work covers however it is way too thin. I'm not sure how they determined the importance of these pieces as there was no discernable pattern. There are no description of the works of art only dimensions, artist and country. This catalogue has a small introduction and profile of the collector Walter Chrysler Junior. Not a good buy.

2 comments about Highland Trails: A Guide to Scenic Trails in Northeast Tennessee, Western North Carolina, and Southwest Virginia.
- This is an excellent book for Tennessee waterfall enthusiasts. Mr. Plumb must have done a lot of in-depth research as his detailed directions to the trailheads and waterfalls are quite accurate, and his descriptions of the waterfalls themselves are vividly fitting. Amy and I have been to over 100 waterfalls in Tennessee and this book pointed out several waterfalls that we had never heard of. This book is a great tool to have while exploring the splendors of Tennessee!
- This book was very helpful in giving me hiking directions to various waterfalls listed in the book. He also has pictures and ratings of most of the falls in his guide.
I must have seen about 19 different waterfalls when I visited Tennessee last June and it was one of the best vacations I ever had!
