  1. Growing up in that area was truly a blessing. Through skilled photography and exceptional writing, this book captures the true essence of the islands, both past and present. It was a great read, a must have for anyone's collection!

  1. The Old Carolina Road (US Route 15) has more history along it than almost any region in the US, and this great travel guide through its words, photos, and maps takes the visitor back into that honored history and out again into the thriving towns and villages that anchor it. The book is a thorough guide to all the exciting historic sites, natural beauty, friendly people, and great places to eat and shop from Gettysburg to Monticello.

  2. This is not your usual travel book. No five-star hotels. No "Night-Life" section. What it is, is a practical guide to exploring one of most interesting and historic stretches of road in this country. It is a guidebook inspired by the Journey Through Hallowed Ground Partnership. This group describes itself in its website as follows: "The Journey Through Hallowed Ground Partnership is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising national awareness of the unparalleled history in the region, which generally follows the Old Carolina Road (Rt. 15/231) from Gettysburg, through Maryland, to Monticello in Albemarle County, VA. From its communities, farms, businesses and heritage sites, we have an opportunity to celebrate and preserve this vital fabric of America which stands today in the historic, scenic and natural beauty of this region."

The guide is a combination of basic history, introductions to historic sites and other points of interest, and recommendations of places to stay and to eat along the way. It provides the information needed to spend some time poking around one of the most fascinating sections of the country.

  3. I saw this book at Oatlands Plantation during the holidays. I think it's a great guide for someone just visiting the area or someone who lives in our historical state.

  1. Before I read "Exploring the Appalachian Trail - Hikes in the Virginias", I thought you could only experience the Appalachian Trail on an extended backpacking expedition. Man, was I wrong! Even if you only have a few hours to spare, you can still enjoy hiking on the AT - this book shows you how. One of a series covering the entire trail from Georgia to Maine, this book describes a wide variety of dayhikes in Virginia.

With this book, I've explored many beautiful sections of the trail in that state - including McAfee Knob, Grayson Highlands, and Shenandoah National Park. You can bet that I will continue to use the "Exploring the Appalachian Trail" series in planning future hikes on the AT!

  2. PLEASE NOTE: THERE are NOT 170 hikes in the book. The whole series must contain that many.

I own 3 books in this series. The Southern Appalachian, the Virginias, and the Mid-Atlantic States guide. I have found these books to be a great aid in planning hikes, especially 2-3 day backpacking trips. Since most of these hikes are either one-way or round trip (as opposed to circuit hikes) you either need to have two cars or plan on seeing the same sites twice. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, but other books have better circuit hikes.

This series IS very informative, not only with regards to the actually hike, but also the history both natural and otherwise of the area you are hiking in.

I have done approx 10 of the 46 hikes in this guide, including both out and back day hikes, as well as 4 day 'thru-hikes' combining 2 or more of these hikes strung together, and this book has been very informative during these hikes. The maps could be a little better, as they are topographical maps with a green line for the trail.. They are adequate, but I've seen better.

All 46 hikes come with a description, a map, an elevation profile, and an itinerary, as well as various other information.

When planning for a hike I do tend to use this book in conjunction with other books, but I usually take this book (or copies of the pages) on the actual hike itself. The fact that the pages are so small allows for easier handling and storage of the laminated pages during the trip.

So if you enjoy hiking and are near the AT while in the Virginias, you may want to take a look at this book. It is well worth the money.

  1. There seems to be no shortage of books about covered bridges these days. This one distinguishes itself by the quality of the descriptions of the bridges and Bill Miller's outstanding photography. It is in a class by itself! Judged by the photography alone it would appear to be at home on the "coffee table". However, to classify it as such would do the book a disservice. The quality of the text makes it much more worthy.

Ohio bridges are the centerpieces based on their numbers, although the other two states are done justice as well. Miriam Wood is the matriarch of Ohio covered bridges and has published an earlier more historically detailed book on this subject. David Simmons is author of several scholarly publications on historic bridges and is editor of Timeline, the spectacular color publication of the Ohio Historical Society. If you have just one book on the covered bridges of this region (or perhaps any region), this should be the one.

  2. The photos in this book are gorgeous. Frequently the verbiage in bridge books makes for pretty dry reading, but I found the words in this book to be as enjoyable as the photos & just the right length.

  3. The book is beautiful beyond words. I got fast shipping and the item arrived in perfect condition. I buy with confidence from Amazon.

  1. As a fan of small town eateries, I applaud the author of this valuable guide to the Old Dominion. Highly rated!

  2. Though a fun book to refer to, I would advise anyone to call ahead to make sure the restaurant still exists. In the 1998 edition there were several restaurants that had closed down, so I was eager to see what the newest edition contains. As I reviewed the new edition's table of contents, I noticed that some of these same closed restaurants were still listed (for example, Fiddler's Green in The Plains has been gone for years, and in it's place is Just Breakfast/Just Lunch. Magpie's in Middleburg has also closed; Maxwells has replaced it); I'm surprised the editors did not make quick phone calls prior to reprinting to see if restaurants were still operating. Also, I was interested in the quality of the restaurants that were listed; I noticed that quirky, fun, local restaurants were sometimes bypassed in favor of a restaurant that lacks atmosphere or appears trendy. That said, I still found the 1998 edition loads of fun, and take it with me whenever I go on Virginia road trips. I'm also looking forward do the 2000 edition.

  3. This book was recommended to me by a co-worker. We love this book. My family goes driving around Virginia on the weekends and then we pull out the book for a local small town restaurant experience. We have not been disappointed. Ever! We have gone to over 50 places and everyone was a dining experience. We leave the book in our car for spur of the moment expeditions. We usually try the "recommend specials" that are listed in the book. It's a fun adventure!

  4. Now in an updated and expanded second edition, Small-Town Restaurants In Virginia by regional writer Joanne M. Anderson features 240 restaurants in almost 150 small towns and villages throughout Virginian and ranging from Abingdon in the Blue Ridge country, to Leesburg near Washington, D.C., and from Monterey on the western edge of the Shenandoah Valley, to Williamsburg and Chincoteague in the eastern area of the state. Each restaurant is provided with basic information included price ranges, meals served, styles of cuisine, local history, dining atmosphere, decor, and variety of foods offered. Whether a local gourmet in search of regionally authentic, or the family out on a day trim, or passing through vacationers and business travelers, Small-Town Restaurants In Virginia is a wonderfully recommended resource for itinerary planning purposes. It would also serve as an ideal template upon which other state restaurant guides could be developed.

  5. This guide is fantastic for navigating your way through the many wonderful small restaurants that are hidden away throughout Virginia. It is too bad that updates to this book are not made more often since restaurants open, close, rename, or relocate so frequently. Virginia is a beautiful state, and a great way to top off a drive through its scenic countryside is with a visit to one of the great restaurants recommended by this guide. I have tried several new places solely based on this book's recommendations and I have never been disappointed. The book divides Virginia into five regions and then lists stellar restaurants for various towns in each of those regions. The guide tells you about the style, cost, atmosphere, etc. so that you will not be unpleasantly surprised. The guide even lists the special dishes for which particular restaurants are noted. One note of caution- some of the restaurants, particularly in the northern Virginia section, are not at all in rural areas. For example, Chantilly and Herndon are in the midst of very congested suburban areas. If you are already there you might as well try the recommended restaurants, but don't travel to these places expecting a dose of small town charm any greater than you would expect to receive in northern New Jersey.

    Satisfied Customer

  2. I Order this Product on the 20 of April, and I have not receive it yet, not even a tracking or email, and this seller advertised that is suppose to be received by the 23rd of April, I am traveling on April 30, and because of them and misleading information i will be lost, in another words don't buy from this seller

  3. couldn't get the newest edition before i left for egypt. some of the prices in here might be off. general sites and advice - excellent! added advice: any sites in luxor, go either really early or really late. ignore the people. for kahn el-kahlili in cairo, to get rid of peddlers, just keep walking. they won't follow you past the area in front of their store because it's the next store's territory.

  4. Havent actually been to Egypt yet - but the guide is well laid out and easy to read. I think it will be very useful.

  5. It's a really easy to read book and has all of the info needed if you're traveling to Egypt. I recommend it!
