- I travel around New England regularly and usually have a fly rod in my car. It is always frustrating when I have a couple of hours of free time and I spend it trying to figure out where to fish instead of spending it fishing. This book has all you need to know to find a spot and catch (and hopefully release) some fish. Unlike some books the authors don't limit themselves to only one kind of fish or claim that every spot they talk about is going to rival the best place you've ever fished. Highly recommended for anyone who gets the privilege of fishing in New England!
- FROM THE MOUNTAINS OF VERMONT TO THE ALLAGASH IN MAINE TO SEACOAST OF NEW HAMPSHIRE. HICKOFF AND PLUMNEY KNOW WERE IT'S AT. FROM THEORY TO FLIES TO PRACTICAL INFO. THEY NOT ONLY TALK THE TALK, THEY WALK THE WALK. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANY FLY FISHERMAN RATHER A BEGINNER OR A EXPERT. TIGHT LINES, STEVE, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.
- I had the pleasure of attending a seminar by Steve Hickoff last winter. I bought this book from him at the seminar, and have used it a lot more than I ever thought I would. My family and I were on vacation at Sebago Lake in Maine recently, and the information in the book on Sebago Lake, the Crooked River, and the Presumpscott River was invaluable. The maps of the Crooked and Presumpscott rivers especially allowed me to get up early, get to a good fishing spot, and even catch a couple of fish (all before the rest of the family even knew I had gone fishing). I really like the Crooked River, it has become one of my favorites. As an earlier reviewer stated, this book gives you the information to get to the good spots, without wasting a lot of time driving around. The book also provided information on what sections of the rivers were fly fishing only, and the local regulations for taking trout and salmon. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who plans on doing any fly fishing in Maine, NH, and Vermont.
- No home movies, no photo albums, no old songs warm myheart more than traveling through New England to some of the very places described in this book. That's where my memories lie. That's where my father took me, and his father before that.
And while I have moved away, there are two great reminders of a childhood that I can only describe as ecstatic. A picture on my wall of E.B. White. And Hickoff & Plumley's book about the best places to fish. Some I've been to. Some I was taken to by these authors. For those of you who are not as nostaglic and wistful about New England, let me with all honesty say that this book will serve as a superb and practical guidebook. And for those who have a little something more connected to the region, this book is a blueprint for irreplacable memories. And damned good fishing spots and tips.

- The book's scattered organization and weak index make it difficult to weed through its often already outdated entries. Some of its listings had been closed for a few years before the book was even published. A guidebook for things to do with kids is needed in NH where you often have to stumble upon things to find out about them, but even in this book you have to stumble upon entries.

- This book was very useful. However, it doesn't cover each state in depth, so if you are just visiting one state, you might look for a more comprehensive guide for that state.

- In the tradition of old-time Yankee yarn-spinners, Citro delivers something that's all too rare nowadays--a darn good story. Dozens of them, in fact. I got so wrapped up in the tale called "The House of the Feasting Dead" that I nearly went past my subway stop. This is a hair-raising tour "dark" side of Vermont, a place populated by ghosts, mystics, spiritualists and even a "stone-throwing devil."
- Joseph Citro's collections of Vermont folklore have become as much a part of the Green Mountain State as sugaring and the Lake Champlain Monster. GREEN MOUNTAINS, DARK TALES continues this series of terrificly readable and enjoyable stories based on Vermont folklore and legend. Anyone who likes the state or just likes a good story would do well to pick up this book. It makes for addictive reading.
- Yet again, I have been enthralled, scared and drawn in by Mr. Citro's tales about my home state. He even covered my home-town ghost in this installment, which thrilled me to no end. He is truly one of our master storytellers, and I highly recommend all of his work.
- I loved this book! I live on the NY/VT border, so I spend a lot of time in southern Vermont, and it was so great to be reading about places that I have been to. It's really interesting to have a mental image of a place because you've been there, and then you learn that this place has a much darker past than you ever could have imagined, and the picture changes, but your interest increases. It's really cool. Citro's books are some of my favorites. He's a great author - I love his writing style.

- As someone who has read and enjoyed several of Mr. Citro's previous books on Vermont and New England ghosts and unexplained phenomena, I was eagerly anticipating this latest effort. I was, however, disappointed to find that it is a very slight volume with bare thumbnail descriptions of Vermont ghostly activity, usually with only the most rudimentary description of where they occurred. As one who is becoming something of an amateur ghost-hunter, this was a let-down, as the title and description of this work would have you believe it provides directions to find these haunted locales. Sadly, it does not.
- This is just the kind of travel guide I like: condensed little stories of doom and eccentricity set in the pastoral splendor and the down-home warmth that is Vermont. I don't think any other state has earned this type of tribute. Just a wonderful book.
- There are a lot of strange things and places in Vermont and Joe Citro knows where all of them are. Then again, I've seen a lot of scary things on Church St., Burlington on a Saturday afternoon!
http://www.vermonter.com recommended!
- I ordered this book for my husband's birthday. He just loved it! I read it after him, and I loved it, too! Joseph Citro is an excellent writer. This wasn't the first book of his that I've read. I would recomend this author to anyone who likes real ghost stories.
