1. I've lived in Vancouver my whole life, but I sometimes find it fun to pick up a Vancouver guidebook to see where the "experts" are sending visitors. This one isn't really a guidebook at all but is set out similar to how Frommer's sets out its "Irreverent Guide" series with headings ("Secret...") followed by insightful information on the topic in question. Don't expect maps, addresses, prices, etc. here, so for visitors, this guide would have to be used in conjunction with another if you wanted to make the most of your time here. What you'll find instead of the regular guidebooky kinds of things is a ton of insight from the author obviously from experience living here. I often found myself nodding "yup, yup" reading through the highlights of my city. There are some history tidbits and even some references to other reading included.
   
   I followed the author's tip and bought a copy of Charles Clapham's Walking the Burrard Loop, a great little book describing an urban and trail walking route around Burrard Inlet which can be split into day-hike sections using public transportation to get back to your starting point. A great way to see things and I'd definitely recommend that book as well.
   
   I would recommend Secret Vancouver to travellers looking for a guidebook that takes them away from some of the standard tourist-fare (though definitely points to the tourist areas that shouldn't be missed). I'd especially recommend this one to locals or new residents who want to know more about the city they call home.

1. I visited Vancouver on one of those fast weekend tours years ago and loved it. However, I didn't get to see much past the beautiful Butcher gardens because those tours only take you so far. I loved the Moon V & V book because it told me all the attractions I could want to see, but also the best restaurants and local entertainment that you wouldn't see on a guided tour. My second and third visits to the area were definitely more culturally fulfilling -- and cheaper too since I knew some bargain places from the book. If you want the full Vancouver and Victoria experience, get this guidebook because it will come in handy.



2. This might be a good book for Vancouver as a whole, but if your vacation is limited to Victoria, you'll want to get a different book. The Victoria section is quite short, and the only detailed street map focuses exclusively on the region around the Inner Harbor. Why is that bad, you ask? Because the author recommends that you get out of that area, and offers his best reviews of restaurants and other locations that aren't on the map. We also found those recommendations to be less than helpful -- restaurant reviews often told you very little about a place except that it exists -- not too helpful when you're trying to decide where to go. If you do get this book for a visit to Victoria, you're at least going to want to pick up another map. Better than that would be to get a book that focuses exclusively on that city.

1. I highly recommend this guide to anyone who will be traveling in the Northeast as well as Canada. This guide gives you everything from upcoming events for the year to where to stay & eat. The maps are easy to read and follow. I have been a reader of the Mobil Guide for many years and it is continuing to give the most accurate, up-to-date travel information. This is the MUST-HAVE for the Northeast traveler.



2. The book gives a good overview of the areas with many addresses. Anyhow I found it a bit too black and white. It gives useful maps, but no coloured pictures from the areas, which would make it a bit more pleasant to read.

1. The book was lots of fun to read. The descriptions of the city using the vantage point of a walker up and down the specified streets was brilliant. Even though my trip to Victoria fell through, I can pick up the book and almost hear, smell and see this fascinating place I hope to visit someday.
