2 comments about Hidden Pacific Northwest: Including Oregon, Washington, Vancouver, Victoria, and Coastal British Columbia (Hidden Travel).
- I have the 5th Edition of this book, but, this can only be better I hope.
It is a very personal review of the states and what they have to offer and as opposed to other books that are just boring and incomprehensible listings of attractions and dining and lodging . I actually went to some of the dining and hidden attraction recommendations from this book and it didn't fail me. All those places were certainly what the book said they would be or maybe more than that. The only drawback i can see is that there wasnt any mention of good campgrounds that car-campers could easily refer to. But for that, you can look up "the best in tent camping". Good Luck with your trips. I know mine was a great success.
- This book covers three main regions including Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia and therefore does not go into too much detail on each region. I would recommend using this book as a good starting point for travel planning, but not if you are looking for lots of details. The book includes items that it describes as being "hidden" or off the beaten path, which could prove interesting for many travelers. The sections on lodging could be enhanced more to include additional suggestions. The book does include some useful maps that are very helpful. For more detailed travel information, you may want to read a guide book that covers one state.

4 comments about Insiders' Guide to Portland, Oregon, 5th: Including the Metro Area and Vancouver, Washington (Insiders' Guide Series).
- INSIDERS' GUIDE TO PORTLAND, OREGON, 5TH is a great guide to the cities of Portland and Vancouver, as well as their surrounding suburbs. Besides such information as house values, attractions, and the quality of schools in the area, the book also features detailed listings of the radio stations in the area, as well as in-depth discussions of what types of healthy-eating ideas and ethnic cuisine you can find in this metroplex. The book lacks a deep discussion of shopping malls in the area, preferring instead to focus on the other types of stores where a guy can find things to keep his woman happy, including CDs to dance to with her and clothes to help him look his best for her, which seems to indicate that independent stores are often the way to go to keep such promises, especially in a high-culture area such as Portland/Vancouver. Despite the lack of information on local malls, however, it's a wonderful book.
- I liked the information in this book, Even has school listings. I was purchasing it for tourism purposes and it covers that but doesn't have pictures or long descriptions and prices. Since that is what I was looking for I was a little disappointed. Good for info bad for tourists.
- This book has lots of useful information, but fails to tie the information in to graphics for those of us who have trouble visualizing the locations from the text. The neighborhoods are described by their names, and rougly tied into the city as a whole. However, the maps are not specific enough.
- These books (there is a series) are the first resource we go to upon learning that it is, once again, time for us to transfer. They have all the information that most people could need and I recommend them to every military person I know that is in the process of transferring to make their move just a little bit easier. A look at the contents of this particular book:
Area Overview
Getting Here, Getting Around
History
Bed-and-Breakfast Inns
Hotels and Motels
Restaurants
Brewpubs
Coffeehouses
Nightlife
Shopping
Attractions
Kidstuff
Festivals and Annual Events
The Arts
Recreation and Spectator Sports
Portland Parks
Golf
Day Trips
Relocation
Child Care and Education
Health Care and Wellness
Retirement
Media
Worship
Index
No, there aren't a lot of pictures, but I can buy a coffee-table book for that. This is information and lots of it - including addresses, phone numbers, and websites when appropriate. Great for visitors and potential newcomers alike!

3 comments about Streetwise Vancouver Map - Laminated Center City Street Map of Vancouver, Canada - Folding pocket size travel map with integrated Sky Train & Express Line ... & stations (Streetwise (Streetwise Maps)).
- I love this series of maps. Small and plastic-coated, they tuck into a purse or backpack easily, don't tear or get wrinkled, and they are colorful and attractive. This particular map is very small and yet very easy to read, and gives you everything you need to know about Vancouver, Stanley Park, University of British Columbia campus, downtown Vancouver, the Vancouver area, and even downtown Victoria, which is across the channel on Vancouver Island. Tourist spots are all noted, along with major hotels. It really is the best way to see a city! I get one for every city I go to.
- Not a bad map, but there are a significant number of streets missing because the map is a bit "zoomed out." Handy to have for orienting yourself, but definitely not ideal as a driving or walking map. For that, purchase a paper map at a bookstore once you arrive.
- "Streetwise Vancouver" packs an enormous amount of information into a small, plastic, portable folding map of the city. Several coverages are provided.
A general Vancouver Area map provides an overview of the city from Richmond and the International Airport to North and West Vancouver. An inset map provide closer detail on Stanley Park and the area between English Bay and Burrard Inlet. A second inset map covers Yaletown and the Downtown area, including Canada Place and B.C. Place Stadium. A third inset map highlights the University of British Columbia campus and adjacent Pacific Spirit Park. The foldout presentation has an index for the major streets, hotels, gardens, museums, and transportation nodes. As an added bonus, small inset maps show Downtown Victoria and the Strait between Victoria and Vancouver.
This map is small enough to easily fit in a purse, backpack, or even a back pocket. There is sufficient information, when coupled with one of several very adequate guide books, to enable the visitor to find his or her way around Vancouver. This product is highly recommended to travelers planning to visit British Columbia's largest city.

- Frommer will never dissapoint you. If you have limited number of days and want to see as much as possible, this is the right guide. IT also details all essential services and key WEB sites. For this price tag, just keep it in your backpack.

4 comments about Newcomer's Handbook for Moving to and Living in Portland: Including Vancouver, Gresham, Hillsboro, Beaverton, and Wilsonville (Newcomer's Handbooks).
- THE NEWCOMER'S HANDBOOK FOR MOVING TO AND LIVING IN PORTLAND: INCLUDING VANCOUVER, GRESHAM, HILLSBORO, BEAVERTON, AND WILSONVILLE is an exceptional book for relocators. However, even non-relocators will find it very enjoyable. It features great coverage of the city of Portland, as well as its incorporated suburbs, yet it also covers unincorporated areas such as Oatfield (which is, for mail delivery purposes, part of Milwaukie), Dunthorpe-Riverdale (which has both Portland AND Lake Oswego ZIP Codes), and Cedar Mill (which has a Portland ZIP Code), as well as the often-overlooked towns of Wilsonville and Happy Valley, and Vancouver, Washington and its suburbs. Many great ideas for education, dining, house-hunting, shopping, health/fitness, and recreation are included in this book. DON'T PASS THIS BOOK UP UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!!!!!!!!!
- We are planning to move to PDX in about two years. We know the city somewhat, but this book is giving us some good information.
- Does this book cover the fact that native Portlanders (and Oregonians for that matter) do NOT want new people moving here? If you move to Portland, don't be surprised for it to feel like everyone is so very friendly......and then BAM! all of a sudden you figure it out. They actually are nice people, they just don't want anyone else to have a slice of the good Portland pie. They have valid concerns, because with the arrival every day of more educated and/or financially capable people, the natives are getting priced out of their housing market, out of places where they grew up. Seriously, if you meet a rare native, they will NOT let you forget that you're talking to/looking at a native.
How about does this book cover the bike-culture snobs in Portland? Don't arrive riding just any old bike, and don't think just because you don't own a car makes you fit in.
Seriously, I hope the book helps you out, but you can't really know until you're here and you figure it out the real way. Like the rest of us.
- I just visited Portland for the first time and was glad to have purchased this book before doing so. Great neighborhood profiles and all kinds of additional information. My favorite travel series so far- better than Frommer's.

4 comments about Top 10 Vancouver & Victoria (Dk Eyewitness Top 10 Travel Guides).
- I am a huge fan of the Top 10 travel guides, the size is perfect for a purse or small day pack and the information is useful. I tend to buy a small guide to carry around and a bigger one such as lonely planet that has more indepth information, but this trip I didn't use the lonely planet that much and stuck with this one most of the time, although I suppose it helped that I was visiting someone who lives in Vancouver. I highly recommend this top 10 guide.
- This Top Ten collection is really good for summarizing everything you need to know about a place, and if you do not stay too long it is not worth buying the bigger more detailed more expensive guide!!!
Definetely worth the money...Took more than a week to arrive though.
- Great book for the highlights of Vancouver, but don't buy it thinking it will have much about Victoria or Vancouver Island. Get the Frommer's book on Vancouver Island for that. Happy whale watching!
- "Top Ten Vancouver" is in the familiar and very useful DK format, with lots of useful information in a compact format for the tourist. In just over 120 pages, "Top Ten" covers the most popular tourist attractions in Vancouver, such as Stanley Park, Canada Place, the Capilano Suspension Bridge, and a variety of museums and other parks. The guide includes pictures, details about each attraction, and maps showing how to get there.
As noted, the focus is on the most popular destinations. The guide includes useful information on reaching the city and where to stay, eat, and shop. The information addresses cautions on crime and traffic. The traveler seeking more choices and details on accomodations should consult some of the most expansive guides such as Fedor's, Frommer's, or Lonely Planet. The compact size of this DK guide makes it perfect for roaming Vancouver. A limited amount of information is provided on the City of Victoria, on Vancouver Island across the Strait of Georgia and reachable by ferry.
This guide is highly recommended for the traveler planning a vacation in Vancouver.
