  1. Look interesting and informative for people who are planning to go to Escalante soon. Good resource. I saw Bryce and Zion Parks on my first trip to Utah- can't wait to go back The escalante looked so beautiful even though I only saw part of it on the way to Capitol Reef National Park

  2. This is a streamlined version of Adkison's lengthier book about the national monument, but is perfect for the short hikes in this beautiful region. It has everything a pocket guidebook should have: clear descriptions, mileage, elevations, maps, and ratings. This is my favorite guidebook for the Grand Staircase whenever I do short hikes.

  3. This book is divided into three sections; Cedar Mesa in SW Utah, The Escalante Canyon and Grand Staircase-Paria Canyon. The Escalante-Grand Staircase hikes range in length and difficultly. Included are the following hikes:
    Upper calf Creek Falls -2m
    Lower Calf Creek Falls-6.2m
    Devils Garden-.07m
    Fortymile Ridge to Sunset Arch-3m
Willow Gulch to Broken Bow Arrow-4m
    Kodachrome Basin's Panorama Trail-2.9-5.4m
    Cottonwood Canyon Narrows-3m
    Willis Creek Narrows-4.8m
    Lick Wash-8m
    Wire Pass to Buckskin Gulch-3.4m
and 9 hikes in the SW area of Utah

This book might be good for getting ideas on where to hike, but some of the information contained in it is not accurate, or lacks sufficient detail. For example, the author fails to mention that a permit to hike Wire pass to Buckskin Gulch must usually be obtained 3 months ahead of time. Also, the directions to Sunset Arch are different than any other guide book. (?) He also fails in giving accurate campground information. There are many more camping opportunities than what he mentions. I would advise consulting other guide books before setting off on any of the hikes and would not use this book for trip planning.

  1. This book give to the reader and future traveller an unique vision of the history of this country. the writer help us to understand the people that inhabited this country and the geological features of this land of enchantment. For an european like me is the first and essential step to the visit of a country.

  3. This is a great travel book, providing quick and easy to reference to the lay-of-the land in the four-corners region in the style of a virtual tour of the area. The author takes you along his journey, showing you what to see and do, how to get there, where to eat, sleep, shop--or simply soak up the sublime beauty.

  4. My wife and I plannned a trip to the Four Corners area and at the last moment received Journey to the High Southwest as a gift. We read it during the plane ride and made immediate adjustments to our travel schedule. The results were so good that we continued, chapter by chapter, to use Mr. Casey's guidance and suggestions. For those uninitiated in the region, or even experienced Four Corners visitors, we strongly suggest this guide. It will provide very accurate and useful information to anyone who uses it. Read the entire book - before you go!

  5. This is a serious guidebook for travellers who take their touring and sightseeing seriously. It covers the Four Corners region of the southwest (UT, CO, NM, AZ) and is divided into four geographic sections. It includes information on the history of each section (in detail), points of interest (fully described), and where to stay/eat (fully annotated). Chapters focus on the canyon country of Utah, the Indian country of Arizona, the Rocky Mountains, and the Rio Grande country. There are also a full index and a substantial bibliography. It's everything you could ask for in a guidebook and should be taken along by anyone travelling in this region. Highly recommended.

  1. I,ve floated and fished the Green for over 20 years and one of my great joys is listening to the tales and advice from great guides such as Dennis Breer and Emmitt Heath. Dennis has put his love and knowledge of this great river into a concise, informative, yet poetic read. Dennis' book will make you a better fisherman in general and, certainly better prepared to match wits with the Green's great trout. The fly tying instructions with color plates are well done and and a necessity to"match the hatch". Sit back and enjoy the Green from your den or get ready to experience the magnificent Green River canyon.

  1. Sundance is such a cool festival, but has changed radically over the last 10 years (and is still changing). The festival has also taken on a kind of mythical status, and as a result it can sometimes be difficult to separate the reality from the hype. Thankfully this book cuts to the chase and provides a load of info on both the festival and the city of Park City itself. If you're a filmmaker (or wanna-be), then the business section provides a useful insight into how buying and selling operates in a festival context (although I'd love to see more on this topic). The city and festival guides are certainly comprehensive, but the I think the most valuable part of the book is the collection of interviews with different people from across the industry talking about their Sundance experiences and how the festival works for them. This provides a wonderful insight into the inner workings of the festival which isn't available in any of the official literature. A great little book which will definitely make your visit to Park City a breeze!

  1. This interesting book covers the Escalante area well. Especially useful are the road/milage accounts, as reaching the trailheads is an adventure in itself !

  2. Oh My God. Having delved into this book in preparation for an upcoming week in the Escalante, I am bowled over by the breadth and depth of this phenomenal book. Amazing. This covers in fine detail backcountry travel routes in the very large and very wild Escalante area. Does not even compare to any other guide I have ever seen. There is such a depth of detail... Plus Steve's enthusiasm for the southlands exudes from the text.

This is an extraordinary book. Emphasis is on longer adventures, but there are also good day trips. Folks looking for placid strolls down well developed trails should probably look elsewhere. Not only are there few developed trails in the Escalante, but they are not described here.

  3. A much needed trail guide, but I'm concerned that those who use this book will end up trampling the fragile Escalante terrain. I tried following a couple of his routes (quite accurate), but I'm afraid after a few years these will be trodden sand pits. The maps have a lot to be desired, but that's why we bring topos', right?

  4. If you have not used a Steve Allen guidebook before, they are indispensable in Canyon Country. His love of these places is evident in the care with which he writes. Steve has been hiking the Colorado Plateau for over 15 years now extensively and much of that time was spent researching this guidebook for the Escalante area. You won't find routes listed in here that were only hiked a single time, they were hiked, reworked, and double-checked many times. Canyoneering is hard core, and the routes into and out of the canyons are areas to easily get lost in. Good directions and good maps are a must. Steve's books also have lots of interesting tid bits on local and natural history. Check out Canyoneering I and II if you like this one.

  5. I enjoyed this book much better than Canyoneering 1 and 2 (which are still OK to good). Everything a guidebook should be.

  1. Whether you are a summer visitor traveling in a Class A motorhome or a weekend tent camper in Utah's backcountry, you shouldn't be without this indispensable resource guide. Camping Utah is a reference guide that to the best of my knowledge covers all of Utah's three hundred and seven public campgrounds. Included in the book are the campgrounds that are managed by the National Park Service, the National Forest, the Bureau of Land Management, Utah State Parks and Recreation, and local counties and city-owned parks. The guide is packed full of information on the campgrounds and their surrounding areas. There is detailed information on road conditions and driving directions, any recreation vehicle restrictions, the number of campsites, the elevation, the setting, the amenities, a reservation source, best season to visit, and activities in the area. The details in the book describes the types of toilets you'll find, whether or not there's a horseshoe pit, and if a trailhead is located near a particular site. The book is organized in regions that match the Utah's Department of Tourism literature. You will find that the book is more accurate than the literature put out by the managing agencies. The author was able to visit all the campgrounds listed in the book except four, due to either the campground being under construction or because of road closure. This book will simplify your task in searching out where to stay so that more time can be spent enjoying Utah's great outdoors.

  2. This guide provides reasonable information on campgrounds. I found it hard to use for trip planning purposes and there is no index.

  1. It has finally arrived. The bible that everyone in the Salt Lake valley has been waiting for. No, it's not another religious doctrine. It is the guide to the diverse canyons of the Wasatch Range surrounding Salt Lake City, Utah. It's bigger and a whole lot better than the Ruckman's old guide. The guidebook covers all of the canyons that were in the previous guide, plus it covers new developments such as City Creek and Neffs Canyon. The Ruckmans follow the same format they used in their old guide, so don't expect many changes in that department. However, to say that this is only a revised edition is an understatement.

The guide is twice as thick as previous editions and covers almost twice as many routes. It is a little bit more expensive, but it is worth it if you want to find the areas like the Shore Line Crag, Broads Fork and a plethora of new routes throughout the Wasatch. The only shortcoming of the guide is its short mention of the bouldering areas. The guide des! cribes the locations of the bouldering areas but it does not describe any of the routes. This was probably done in order to save space and money but it would be nice for the Ruckmans to pass on some bouldering beta. Overall impression, the guide is an excellent investment and a good excuse to replace your old torn up guide.

  1. James Demoux's Flyfisher's Guide To Utah is a complete and exhaustive reference on Utah's lakes, rivers, and fish. This 595 page compendium is enhanced with more than 150 detailed lake and reviewer maps showing access, boat launches, public lands, campsites, and areas of special interest, in addition to hatch charts, stream facts, and recommended flies. An ideal planning resource for fishing trips ranging from day-trips to extended vacations, the Flyfisher's Guide To Utah offers a wealth of practical information and recommendations on accommodations, campgrounds, listings for fly shops, restaurants, even car repairs and rentals, hospitals, and airports. If you are looking for the perfect angler's holiday somewhere in the vast and diverse landscape of Utah, then begin by browsing through the pages of James Demoux's Flyfisher's Guide To Utah!

  2. This book has it all. It actually gives useful information in an easy to understand format. I have been a fly fisher for several years and this is by far the best book I have seen on fly fishing in Utah. The book tells me how to get there, when to go and what flies to use when I arrive. Several people have told me this is their fly fishing 'Bible'. Entertaining stories and excerpts about Utah add flavor for when you are not fishing (heaven forbid).

  3. This is the great Utah fly fishing reference (currently updated 2007) book. It has a lot of information on the streams and lakes in the state, like GPS locations, Fly Hatch Charts, Maps, Fish ID pictures and locations positions in DeLorme's Utah Gazetteer. It has a lot of other information in specific regions on larger cities, such as Lodging, Campgrounds, Restaurants, Vets, Hospitals, Fly Shops, Auto Rentals and Repairs, and the Chamber of Commerce. There is a huge section on the Green River. A great Resource and a MUST have for the fly fisherman/women who want to fish Utah.

  4. This is the best informational guide ever! If you are a Fly Angler wanting solid, reliable information this is the book to have in your gear bag. Those of you new to the great sport of Fly Fishing, this is the book to read, study and assist in planning your next trip. Well done James.

  5. Lived in Utah 20 years but never knew where a lot of these places were or at least how to access them. Highly recommended for anyone getting started fishing in Utah or who has just moved here.
