3 comments about High In Utah.
- This book is excellent. It is loaded with information on 30 Utah mountains. The description for each mountain includes hiking time (a range for both fast and slow hikers), distance, difficulty, starting elevation, elevation gain, USGS map, trialhead, Camping, tips and precautions, the hike, background, and where to find more information. The book also includes various pictures for each mountain and two maps including the mountian and how to get to the trialhead. The book is not only helpful as a guide but fun to read and enjoy the pictures. I have found it to be the best all-round guide to Utah mountains on the market.
- If your goal is to 'bag' the highest peak in each of the counties listed, then this is THE book to use. While not as thorough as Kelsey's (and the authors admit that, because the goal is to make it simple) the information provided is more than sufficient. The photos don't really show the routes (like Roach's Colorado books) but do give the 'atmosphere' of the climb. I've done a few out of the book, and plan on doing the rest as time allows. I think it's a nifty idea, and would recommend it to anyone with any experience level at all in the mountains (and especially anyone who wishes to drive to the top and sit on the roof of the car to gain more altitude ;).
- This book is an excellent guide for anyone who wants to complete the highpoints of Utah's 29 counties. For "true" county highpointers, the goal is to get to the highest point in each county. Sometimes this is along a boundary line with an adjacent county (a so-called liner). These liners are distinct from the highest summit in some counties. Wiebel and Miller provide both the highest points and the highest summits. The book is complete with descriptions of approaches and hikes to the highpoints. Although a map and compass (and the knowledge to use them) is always needed, the book is complete on its own. Highly recommended.

2 comments about Hiking Utah's Summits.
- A great book that is well written and easy to follow. Ms. Huff's articles are a definite bonus! She normally gives a general history of the area in which the peek resides. She goes "above and beyond" by interviewing inhabitants of the area/county and gets his/her view of the area's historical significance. In some articles, she even discusses how each peek or mountain range was formed geologically. The maps are ideal as are the accurate distances to different landmarks. This book is a must for any reader/hiker/outdoor enthusiast who wants hike Utah's highest peeks by county!
- I've just moved to Utah and on the drive into the state I purchased this book at a visitors center. I couldn't think of a better way to explore my new state than while hiking to the highest summit of each of it's counties. Huff and Wharton do an excellent job of weaving stories into an informative guidebook. There area history section has greatly added to the value of the book, and has helped me learn plenty about the state of Utah. My biggest complaint is that the distances stated in the book are often grossly erroneous. For example, the Bridger Peak distances are off by ~50%. You'd think distances would be double checked before going to print, but these apparently were not.

1 comments about Westwater Lost and Found.
- This book is written by a rafting guide who was captivated by Westwater Canyon, on the Colorado River, close to the Colorado border. This canyon has a treacherous section called Skull rapids, where my own cousin drowned in a rafting accident. The author, after guiding for 5 years, took his mother on a trip through Westwater Canyon, and lost her when their raft overturned (yes, she drowned). At that point his relationship with the canyon became more complicated. During an exodus from the area after that accident, he continued to be obcessed with the subject, and continued working on his book about it. This is not just a book on rafting the canyon. It starts with the early history of the region, from Native Americans, to the little town of Westwater that sprung up as a railroad town. In addition to the history of pioneer rafters, it covers farmers, outlaws, miners, cattlemen and sheepmen. As a native of the eastern Colorado, western Utah region this story takes place in, and a local history buff, I would give this book a good rating on all counts. Having also lost a relative in Westwater canyon, my bond with the author may be stronger than the normal reader.

1 comments about Utah (America Series).
- Utah has so many areas of interests, over 5 national parks with amazing red rock formations that are incomparable to anything in the world, beautiful snow capped mountain ranges in the north, and a rich history for the LDS church. I bought this book as a gift and the woman I bought it from told me this book was what motivated her family and her to visit our beautiful state. That review speaks for itself.

2 comments about Landscape Of Desire.
- Landscape of Desire - Identity and Nature in Utah's Canyon Country - Greg Gordon
The author mentions in his "Author's Note" that "For years I have struggled with the dilemma of writing about a place I love, a place known only to a few hearty souls..." I to hesitate to mention this book for fear this wonderful land will become over trodden, but do so for the same reason as the author - to get the word out on conservation of our lands...to helps us all to learn about the wonderful natural lands around us and to help us all to find ways to conserve these lands and use them wisely. Greg Gordon not only describes these lands through history, land and people as does Kenneth A. Brown and Wallace Stegner, but also interweaves his story about his relationships with the land and with his students that accompany him during a two month hike along Muddy Creek and the Dirty Devil River from I-70 to Lake Powell. By doing this, to this reader, the area and book comes alive. This book is not just about the land, it's history but is also about human relationships, and how you can learn from not only the land but from each other. Gordon does a wonderful job of taking you through this desert environment, providing you with insights on the geology, plant and animal life and history of the area and does it in a human story telling manner that rivals many works by Edward Abbey. You know he loves this land, its solitude and its beauty and that he desires to preserve it through education and stewardship. A wonderful read and a great story teller, I couldn't put the book down and look forward to reading more by this author! David Lloyd Koenck Snowmass, Colorado Moab, Utah
