  1. Tuva - Shamans and Spirits is an expedition from the capital of Kyzyl to isolated nomadic yurts of the central Asian steppes and remote alpine mountains where the Tuvan people are rediscovering their ancient Shamanic and Buddhist rituals and healing arts. We witness previously forbidden ceremonies, interviews with Shamans and Lamas, Tuvan throat-singing, nomadic feasts, and the daily life and celebrations of the people. 55 minutes.

  1. The Lonely Planet travelogue series does it again with "Vietnam," giving us priceless glimpses into the lives and customs of people in present-day Vietnam. This program touches upon the war with the U.S. and its lingering effects, but does not dwell on that theme. Ironically, it shows the emergence of small-scale capitalism in both southern and northern parts of the country. One gets the impression of a very poor country still struggling to heal itself and forge its place in the world. The last few minutes are particularly memorable, with traveller Justine Shapiro talking to a community of Hmong in the north, and learning that she is the first westerner they have seen in ten years -- "never mind the war."

  2. This is vintage Lonely Planet. I show this every year to my World Geography students. You learn about the lingering difference between the north and south. Eastern cultures tend to drink and eat what we might term edgy foods and the like..you won't believe what Justin eats on this video, I should say what she drinks---major yuko! The seaside resort is spectacular, as long as you don't need electricity 24 hours a day. Her visit at a war memorial type place complete with tunnels used during the Vietnam war is fascinating. Her trek through Hanoi with it's 'trade identified street names' is intriguing. I love this video and highly recommend it.

  1. This video was very educational. It was full of information on some of the cities that are in this region. Some of it was full of information on Chicago. I visited Chicago once before and it was excellent.

  1. "The Modocs were a scrappy little tribe..." is a quote from this sappy, condescending, and offensive film.

As far as the geological information, it might have been okay for a junior high class, I suppose, except that it would be too religious for public schools. You won't hear the terms pyroclastic or stratovolcano, but you will hear again and again, "angels, hell, god, heavens, goddess, sacred etc..."

As a student of geology, I found this tape nearly a complete waste of time. The only thing good about it is the spectacular pictures of the major volcanoes in the United States. But, if you're looking for indepth information on volcano systems, plate tectonics, or geology, try another source. This is not going to give you anything to chew on.

And, as an American Indian, this tape is beyond condescending. Again and again you hear what the Native Americans called each volcano - as if there's some mystical power in that. If only the poor white men would have just listened to the noble savages.

Please! That's what I get for thinking that the most expensive tape offered by Amazon.com on volcanoes is going to be the best. Rob Lightner, did you really watch this?
