  1. This is truly a great travel video. It's a cursory tour through a very diverse country, but Rick Ray's script is poetic and sensitive. All too often, travel videos of "exotic" lands are insensitive to the cultures they explore and nearly relegate the locals to zoo exhibits. But as Ray claims, "to analyze India on Western terms is a big mistake." This video covers a broad geographical range, from the Himalayas to the Backwaters of Kerala, from the ancient city of Varanasi to the modern developments of Mumbai. Throughout, this provides the relevant spiritual, cultural, and historical contexts.

There are some funny spots in this movie- for example:

"[The Ganges] waters not only wash the sins out of men's souls, they wash the stains out of men's socks."

    and

"It's been said that all Indians are born actors. And the worst ones are in movies."

  1. The biggest surprise about this this video was that it is a collection of 4 VHS tapes that total 5 hours and 36 minutes of viewing pleasure. In fabulously filmed scenes of the Italian vineyards, the set brings you the flavors of both the wine and the cultural traditions of Italy. This boxed set will add to any wine collectors library as well as entice a traveler to take the time to get a real "taste" of Italy. Molto bene!

  1. I saw "Confessions of a Train Spotter" on PBS about 20-25 years ago, along with the other shows that made up the series called "Great Railway Journeys of the World." "Confessions of a Train Spotter" is the only episode of the series that I have seen available for sale. I bought a VHS tape of it in 1997 and haven't seen it in any store since then. I recently found the book "Great Railway Journeys of the World", written by the hosts of the series' episodes. These are essential programs and deserve to be re-introduced to a new audience. A boxed set of all the episodes, especially on DVD, would be a treasure trove, indeed. I'm sure they would bring back wonderful memories, especially for those fortunate enough to have experienced these train trips firsthand.

  1. I am from Puntarenas, Costa Rica; and I ordered this video because I live in the USA and wanted to return to my native country. This video provided an excellent source of information about pretty much a lot of costa rica like the gold museum, history, sites, beaches, nightlife, etc. It was a great video I believe. And it portrays costa rica as it truly is, and the sites and views int he video are true,a dn the country truly looks that beautiful because I have been there and seent hose things! All I can say is, "Que TUANIS y PURA VIDA Costa Rica!

  2. This video provided 25 minutes of generic film footage, interspersed with simplistic narration describing the general characteristics of Costa Rica. This documentary reminded me of the films we watched in elementary school, which were always followed by quizzes with questions like "Name two beaches in Costa Rica" and "Name the volcano featured in the film."

I was hoping for some good scenes of the country and information on places to visit. Unfortunately, much of the video is comprised of stock footage of people water skiing, children playing on the beach, and tourists looking at local crafts in the city markets.

If you are planning a visit to Costa Rica, buy the Lonely Planet guidebook and wait to see the sights in person.

  1. I definately think it is a great video, because you get to see Christian, Mark and Ste just acting "normal". It was fun just to see how crazy those guys are!! They performed songs how they did before they got a record deal, just with one or two guitars. They sound amazing, and they sing about 6 songs including Still On Your Side, Back Here, and Ghost Of You And Me. Plus, need I mention the fact that they show Mark and Ste shirtless?!?! Comeon, that's a reason to get it right there!!

  2. This dvd shows why BBMak is heads above other "boy bands" -- for one, these guys can actually sing, and secondly, two of them can actually play guitar. I like the stripped-down versions of their songs here better than on their cd. A nice bonus is that you can watch/listen to just the music performances, skipping the sound effects and tourist commentary in-between songs.

Oh, the guys are still handsome, too...particularly Christian with his beautiful eyes.

The dvd features DD 5.1 and DD 2.0 mixes. A minor complaint, but it would have been nice to have had a PCM stereo track.

The strangest thing about this dvd is Mark wearing a "M*A*S*H 4077" t-shirt during some of their touring. I don't know what his thinking was behind that, but it seems insensitive to me.

  3. "Music in High Places - BBMak (Life in Vietnam)" is a nice show showcasing the talents of British band, BBMak in the beautiful country of Vietnam. Not only is the music nice, but it's complimented by the enchanting backdrops of the countryside. The BBMak guys perform everywhere from a forest to a cave. This is definitely great for BBMak fans, but I would also suggest it to others who want to listen to music while looking at some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world.

  4. I used to be a fan of BBMak when they first got popular in the U.S. but then all of the sudden, the band just kinda disappeared. So I stopped listening to their music until I found out about this DVD. I was interested in the DVD right the way as I am a Vietnamese myself. This is one of my very first purchases on Amazon.com.

First, this is a great DVD for all the BBMak fans. They're truly talented individuals, each of them can really sing. Just 2 guitars and 3 vocals, they have put up a great show. Well, let's talk more about this show. If you're like me expecting a concert crowded with fans, then you would be a little bit disappointed at first when u play the DVD. There're just performances done in serveral locations in Vietnam by BBMak with absolutely nobody around. But just think for a second, this is a "Music In High Places" DVD, so people from there would be like "poor" maybe!? Lots of them wouldn't know much about popular music or just foreign music in general. I doubt that a lot of people from the locations BBMak was shooted knew who BBMak are.

Second, still, this is a great DVD for BBMak fans. Besides being so talented, they're really nice people. I couldn't think anybody would enjoy places like that in Vietnam, especially a so sucessful band like BBMak. But they really appriciated what they were shown to, the history, the people and all. There're a lot of behind the sences, interviews and some of the history about some places in Vietnam. So yeah, all the BBMak fans should have this DVD as well as all the other music fans.

Note: What you see from this DVD is not all how Vietnam is really like. I'm from Hanoi, the capital of the country and it's much different from the places that are shown on this DVD. I would really like people to know how beautiful my city is but it seems like people from other countries are only interested in the poor/nature places, it's kinda sad.

And Gosh, people from there speak much better English than the 2 ladies on the DVD. It is sooooo embarrassing for me to watch the DVD with a friend. I feel bad for BBMak because those two just talked, talked and talked to get their jobs done. They didn't care if it would make any sense...

I would still give this DVD 5 stars because asides from my personal frustrations, this is truly a great DVD. So, go get it, people!

  5. I enjoyed the senary of Vietnam, looked hot and humid as I am sure it was ; )
And the guys in BBMak were pretty good too; they sounded great, played wonderfully, and harmonised super! The only thing that would have made this DVD better would have been more songs, but the 9 or so songs are more than plenty to enjoy! And they are some of the best ones! Perticularly, "Ghost of You and Me" performed in this huge marble cave! The acoustics were amazing! You could just tell while the guys were singing, that they were being blown away by it too. Thus were singing their hearts out!
A very good hour and 20 minutes watch. I'd recommend this to anyone; BBMak lover or not.
