4 comments about Italy: Touring Italy.
  1. This video shows you all of the cities and towns you'd want to remember after a trip to Italy. I was fortunate to have gone there twice. It gives you some historical background in an entertaining, and enjoyable way. The scene of the ancient Roman soldiers on the march can make you laugh out loud. And the scenery is fantastic but, of course, with Italy as a subject, why wouldn't it be? This video is for anyone who's been to Italy, or who dreams of going.

  2. Though it is a bit expensive, this is a good video for anyone who has been to Italy. It will bring back memories of places you visited and is a way to show friends where you were. It covers the areas of Rome, Verona, Venice, Portofino, Genoa, Pisa, Milan, Florence, Naples, Pompeii, Bologna, Tivoli Garden and the Vatican. It could be more detailed, but for only an hour long it does have a lot of information. If you are planning to go to Italy, it will give you ideas for things to research so you know what you are seeing when you get there.

  3. Touring Italy is a good video for an overall review of Italy. It covered too much history which in my opinion should be reserved for book reading. Instead the video should have concentrated on the main attractions only. I would like to have seen more of Rome and Venice since those are the only places in Italy that we will be traveling.

  4. In my opinion, when you visit another country is not just for sightseeing and eat; I like to receive a background of its history; that is called CULTURE, and it is something really important, especially for european or educated people from other countries. This video has everything: it shows very nice places combined with educational comments about each place.
I strongly recommend it. It's an oldie one, but a good one.

  1. This is the best video I've ever seen on the Grand Canyon, in that it manages to cover geology, topography, sightseeing, accomodations, and combined Indian, frontier and park history, all in one hour!

  2. What an experience! I learned so much about the Canyon, the Native American culture, all while watching absolutely beautiful photography of one of the amazing wonders of the world. This video is more than just a "What to do at the Park". It encapsulates the history, development and beauty of a place rightly called "The Grand Canyon." Buy this video if you are planning a trip, have been to the Park, or even if you've only dreamed of visiting this historical National beauty.

  3. This is way beyond a travel video -- a wonderfully informative, and entertaining story told of one of our national treasures -- really delves into the history; beautiful visually; a ton of fascinating info -- a must for any national park lover! Five stars plus!

  4. It is difficult to put the Grand Canyon experience into words, yet this video has done just that - along with breathtaking cinematography and emotionally moving music. Beautifully layered sights, sounds, historical photos and narratives truly bring the Grand Canyon experience alive. If you are looking for far more substance and depth than your average travel video, make this part of your video library.

  1. Do you ever drive a regular route to work each day? You know, a route you're really familiar with? And some times, when you finally arrive at your destination, you don't really recall driving that route? You remember pulling out of the driveway, and then arriving at your destination, but you don't remember what happened in between? Ya didn't recall any traffic jams, or some odd thing on the side of the road, or any of the notable landmarks? It's almost like you're TOO familiar with that pathway to the sweat factory...

That's what happens to me some times when I watch the UN-Special Edition version of "The Empire Strikes Back". I've become so familiar with it, it's scary. I remember hitting the Play button and watching the opening "Story So Far" crawl. And the next thing I know, I'm watching Luke's brandy-new prosthetic hand gettin' prodded and poked by a medical droid. That's when I think to myself, "WHOA, WTF?! What happened to the Hoth battle with the AT-AT walkers? Or Yoda training Luke to be a Jedi? Or Han Solo gettin' turned into a giant fudgesicle? Or Darth Vader's revelation that he's-- (whoops, that'd be givin' away too much, heh)? I'm sure all that stuff was in there... wasn't it???"

Needless to say, I get a bit scared whenever I experience this kind of "zone-out". On the upside, this experience ain't nearly as annoying and obnoxious as those Star Wars freakos who recite every single freakin' line of the flick by heart. Those guys make me wish I had one of those Han Solo blaster guns with a "slow death" setting on it, you know what I mean? `Course, there's also "death by Jar-Jar", but that'd be TOO cruel and unusual...

Bottom line: If you're big into the "Star Wars" trilogy in general, and "Empire" in particular, you might not wanna get TOO familiar with the movie. Then again, maybe you actually get a thrill from zoning out, who knows. Ya freakin' weirdo...

    `Late

  2. The second film in the STAR WARS legacy is a prime example of absolute butchery! By now, there are (3) versions of this film; the original 1980 theatrical release, the 1997 Special Edition with added computer sequences and dialogue revisions and finally, the 2004 DVD release with the original actor playing the Emperor removed and replaced with Ian McDermid, who has played the role in JEDI, PHANTOM, CLONES and REVENGE. Whether it's his property or not, George Lucas had no right to continuously fix what wasn't broken in the first place.

Make no mistake! If you can find a good copy of the 1995 re-issued, digitally-mastered version of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK on VHS, buy it! Even if you have the film on DVD (and it is worth owning on DVD for that perfect picture and sound), own the original version, too. It's still the best!

  1. Rick Steves does an excellent job taking us through Greece. He gives great details about Greece and it's history...

  2. While watching Rick Steves' travel series you can't help but be impressed by his intellectual enjoyment of the areas he visits. Not only does he take you to places you might not see "even" on a tour, he fills in those tantalizing bits of information you might only find if you did some extensive research or had an appreciation for fine art and history.

If you are at all thinking of visiting Greece, you should see this video. There are many travel tips you might miss unless you read one of Rick's books. Who knew you could perhaps get a cheaper fare home if you waited until you got to Greece to purchase
a ticket. We assume that is more convenient for the backpack traveler than the occasional vacationer.

Learn about the 999 steps and the National Archeological Museum. View the black sand beaches and ancient pottery. Imagine walking in the footsteps of Socrates or taking a ferry ride across the Aegean sea. Not to mention seeing the delicious cuisine and sunsets.

    Features:

    Ruined Palace of Mycenae
Evolution of Greek art at the National Museum in Athens
    Ferry ride to Santorini
    Athenian cuisine and local restaurants

If you missed these on TV, you can enjoy them one by one and enjoy a visual journey around the world.

  3. A month from now I shall be roaming about Greece so I have been preparing myself for the journey by consuming various tour videos. This particular video combines two installments of Rick Steves series of travels in Europe, "Greece: Athens and the Peloponnese" and "Greece: Greek Island." The first finds Steves coming to Greece from Italy via the sea, visiting the coastal city of Napolis, the ruins at Mycenae, and the great theater at Epidauros, before moving on to Athens. The Greek islands being visited are Paros, Santorini, and Samos.

Steves is apparently a backpacker, which means while he does go to visit the sites that tourists flock to when they visit Greece, he also enjoys getting off the beaten path and finding places where tourists rarely go. Now, I am going on a tour, where my transportation needs will be taken care of and I can be driven in air-conditioned comfort to all the things I want to see. Part of the purpose of this video is intended to show you some of the things you should see (the Hephaisteion at the Agora in Athens would be the prime example of something I added to my list of things to see because of this video), but what I appreciated the most was that Steves gives the traveler a sense of confidence about traveling to that corner of the world.

Many of the tips have more practicality for those who are going it alone and traveling more by whim than tour schedule, but even those travelers who are not planning to wander too far from their protective cocoon should feel better about their impending trip after watching these videos. I now know how the public phone system works in Greece and that I should brush up on my backgammon skills (i.e., remember the rules) since that is apparently the national game of Greece. Rick Steves provides a nice balance between useful information and beautiful sites, and with each video running short of a half-hour in length the lessons are easily digestible. Now I just need to find myself a nice CD that can teach me some basic Greek words and phrases so I can avoid being the Ugly American during my trip.
