  1. First, let me apologize for the low marks if, in fact, this was supposed to be all about the food in Malaysia. It was not advertised as such. Now, don't get me wrong, after 5 weeks in Malaysia I've become crazy about Malaysian cuisine. I was making Laksa Lemak while I was watching it. But I wasn't really interested in a tour of the kitchens and restaurants of Malaysia. I wanted to see and hear about the country. On occasion he does stop at an attraction like the Batu caves, but he doesn't stay long, doesn't say much that's useful, and all too soon is back in a restaurant.

That may be a good thing, as his information wasn't always especially accurate. He seemed to think that the natives of Borneo were the original Malays. Yes, part of Borneo is Malaysia and there are Malays living there, but the Iban people of Borneo are not at all related to the Malay.

Finally, while I'm not a prude, I did find his incessant bleeped-out obscenities a bit tiresome and self-indulgent. In fact, that pretty much describes the whole DVD.

  1. A clear look at Shanghai and Hong Kong so you know what to expect when you visit.

  2. Quality is the usual Rudy Maxxa as is the target. When Globe Trekker targets the backpacker Rudy targets the people with more money wanting more luxery. Different strokes for different folks.

My biggest problem with this video is it only covers two cities and one I have no interest in. Considering it's called China to the Max you'd think it would get more than 30 feet off the coast.

What I'd like to see is Beijing to the Max, Sichuan to the Max, Guangxi to the Max etc...

Overall one of the better China travel Videos

  1. On the comfort scale, these train rides are one step above the Central America train rides. Those riders who choose to ride on top of the cars (with the conductor, no less) obviously have a limited sense of what's dangerous. You will learn a little history as you visit old Inca sites, and will get acquainted with mighty old steam locomotives. These trains aren't ritzy, but your chances of surviving the ride is better than with the Central America trains.

  2. In typical TWBT format, covers trains in six countries, approx. 10 minutes each. Time for a few quick glimpses of the depot, the train itself, some passengers, and a few scenic views; then on to the next country. Excellent video and audio quality, including many overhead helicopter shots. Starts in Ecuador, then to Brazil and south, including Macchu Picchu. Ends with the "Patagonia Express," a steam train publicized by Paul Theroux; typically, the DVD shows this train arriving at its destination at night missing all the scenery in the area. Really a "sampler" of the subjects covered, providing only tantalizing glimpses of several potentially fascinating rail trips.
