  1. This is an old video, but still gives some insight to Egypt. I was looking more for a travel documentary, but this video did talk about many of the cities I plan to visit in Egypt. There was an interesting segment on the cotton industry in Alexandria and a glimpse at the major sites in the major cities.

1 comments about Weekend Explorer Taipei, Taiwan.
  1. I live in Taipei and bought Weekend Explorer Wild Taiwan and Weekend Explorer's Taipei to share with my family more about where I am living. The quality of the videos was horrible. Shaky camera, poor tour guide, missed the MAJORITY of the major tour sites.. Instead of seeing Snake Alley or enjoying views of the Night Markets and snacks they serve, we get to see the tour guide dance with a couple of the aboriginees and beat a drum at a small cultural event. If the program was longer, things like this might be acceptable. But when we are talking about a 30 minute documentary and they substitute viewing the major tourist attractions with crap that the local population doesn't even care anything about, it's just not acceptable. Overall it's a horrible documentary of what the country has to offer. The Taipei DVD also includes the entire Wild Taiwan DVD on it as well, so no need to waste your money on both like I did. Well, even buying one of them is a waste of money IMO. Taiwan is even mispelt on the front cover of the DVD as "Tiawan". This was produced by PBS. Enough said.

1 comments about Dr. Merry's Nomad Travel: Treasures of Peru.
  1. I saw a documentary on Machu Picchu once and it was boring: all stones and no people. This documentary is different in that it speaks of people, boats, customs, history, etc.

Many know that the Spanish persecuted the indigenous peoples of America, but this work says that the Inca also oppressed smaller tribes. There's the widely known term "pre-Hispanic," but this work also uses the term "pre-Incan." This work does not treat Peruvians as a monolithic group. It shows smaller cultures that the Incans did not conquer and it showed they Aymara who were not Incan and do not speak Quechua. Many may be horrified by seeing a man playing a pre-colonial priest who hacks a llama's heart out.

This may be new to DVD, but it has the documentary style of something done in the 1970s. Instead of showing a person speaking Spanish or Quechua and then having an English translator come in, this work has a narrator who summarizes interviewees, but you never hear from the people themselves.

The work moves from the indigenous to the modern and Hispanicized. The work starts by saying the Peruvian Tourism Board helped to put this together. So this is not a neutral work. However, it did its job: this does make me want to take a trip to Peru. The work doesn't say anything about Fujimori or the Shining Path. This may be a nice documentary for students to watch when a Spanish language class is wrapping up.

2 comments about The Island Ireland from the Air.
  1. The Island: Ireland from the Air is a gorgeous DVD tour of the Irish landscape, filmed entirely from the air to reveal how water, earth, and stone have formed the rugged character of "the island". Featuring many dramatic locations never before filmed on television or video, ancient tombs, medieval castles, and 5,000 year-old stone circles, sea cliffs, plunging valleys, remote mountains, and more, The Island is a breathtaking visual experience accompanied by an original music score composed by Brian Byrne and performed by the RTE concert orchestra. A commentary narrated by Cathal O'Shannon rounds out this dazzling tribute to the stellar beauty of the Ireland. 80 min., color.

  2. Just purchased this DVD, and for the price, you could buy two other DVDs that are much better! I gave it one star because there are some pretty scenes, but I was watching the clock to see when the 80 min. was up, and that should tell you a lot! I own five Ireland DVDs, this is not the worst of the lot, but it is number four. First of all, the music is very distracting and seems out of sync with the video most of the time, it becomes loud and dramatic at times, very distracting from the scenery. There were far too many scenes of crashing ocean waves. The narration is overly dramatic and very historical in nature. If you like a lot of drama and tons of rambling historical info, you might like this. I thought the narration was distracting to the scenes. And it ends by showing the worst of Ireland, like junk yards and industrial pollution, and the impact of progress...I'm sure that's realistic, but hey, I can see that in the good ole USA, just down the street...it wasn't what I thought I paid $24.95 to see. When I watch this again (someday far in the future) I will watch it on mute...there are a few captions to tell you the locale that is being filmed. My idea of a great Irish video is Video Visits: Discovering Ireland produced by Questar...a fantastic two hour DVD that cost about $13.99. Head and shoulders over this one! And the Magnificent Scenery of Ireland is second choice, both cheaper than this one. And both of them better productions.
