  1. I lived in Australia for a few years and never knew the things show on this DVD. Wish I had bought it before I moved back to the US so that I could visit the islands.

  1. I have bought DVDs from both Maxa and Steves and find both to be pretty good. If I had to pick one I'd probably recommend Max as Rick Steves can come off as a bit boring nearing grating after a couple of hours. Steves books are thorough however and make for a good source (though Karen Brown's are the best for quaint inns and travel itineraries).

  1. Whether you can afford to go to Scotland or only want to travel from the comfort of your sofa, this is an excellent purchase. Highly recommended.

  2. This is without doubt the worst travel DVD it's been my misfortune to see.
Let me count the ways" (1) the scenes that weren't videotaped in the very late afternoon sun, were done at dusk...everything at street level is in shadows, with a glimpse of light on rooftops, (2) the only interior shot is of a pub, which is repeated twice (which means we hear about the crown jewels, and the art museum, and famous homes, but all we actually see are deep-shadowed exterior shots), (3) the cameraman/editor is fixated on the daily firing of a canon at 1 pm...it appears again & again, (4) there is next to nothing of the massed bagpipe Military Tattoo at the time of the Edinburgh Festival, or of other performers, (5) the overall impression is of Edinburgh as a grim, bleak, dingy, soot-streaked, barren city on an overcast winter's day that no sane person would voluntarily visit. Unbelievable!

  1. This is a very economical way to enjoy the country that is Finland. Keep in mind that there are many places to cover, so not much time is spent on individual locations. The videography is quite lovely and really brings out the natural beauty of the landscape. The only drawback is the narration. I wish the voice-over artist actually knew how to pronounce the place names. It got to be quite distracting after the first few errors. Finnish is not that difficult to pronounce. The same rules apply each time. Perhaps next time, if there is a newer version, the producers could enlist the help of a native Finn! For anyone who is not so particular about the pronunciations, this is still a great way to visit Finland.

  1. As people talk about racism in America it seems like we mostly talk about the divide between blacks and whites. Yet, through American history racism has taken on many, many different forms.

This DVD made me realize that America treated the Japanese - even our out citizens - very badly during World War II. I didn't know that we put them into camps, took away their rights etc...

The most amazing track on the DVD is a government propoganda film that defends putting innocent Japanese people into internment camps. It's shocking.

Then you get to see the bombing of Hiroshima which is just horrific.

This is a brave title to release.

  2. Watching this DVD made me realize how the more things change the more they stay the same. What we are doing in gitmo with teh detainies is exactly, aparently, what we did with the Japanese during World War II. This documentary really made me think as it explains the process of interning Japanese Americans in camps during World War II. It's frightening, not just becuase it happened then, but becuase similar things are happening now.
