All Hail the Queens
Amos Lassen
Alluvial Filmworks' "Bump!: Great Britain" takes queens to see the queen's castle. Shannon McDonough takes viewers of the Canadian TV show now n DVD on an amazing trip to the British Isles by starting in Brighton, a seaside resort where we go to Brighton Pier and ride the rides at the carnival there before going shopping. Then we eat and go a summer palace and then to the museum to see the exhibit of gay and lesbian history.
Next on our tout is Manchester which seems like a small gay enclave replete with gay shops, bars, restaurants and hotels. Canal Street in Manchester is nothing like the Canal Street of my former city, New Orleans as here it lies at the heart of the gay part of town. Manchester is the host city of Gayfest and the Mr. Gay, United Kingdom was also held here, Manchester is home to a large number of gay guesthouses and each has a certain uniqueness.
The jewel in the crown of Great Britain is, of course, where the queen lives, London. London has a vibrant gay scene and we go to Buckingham Palace, Convent Garden and Piccadilly Circus. We finally arrive in Soho which is the gay section of town. Graham Norton, who hosts Britain's most popular talk show shares his ideas about gay London and we get a history of Oscar Wilde before we go to exercise at a gay gym, visit gay guesthouses and then take a peek at the gay Mardi Gras. To end the tour we get to go shopping.
Here is a wonderful look at Britannia and shows us a London that few of us know.

5 comments about Rick Steves Europe DVD: Italy.
- I have used several of Rick Steve's European DVDs and guidebooks and have found them to give accurate advice that saves the traveller time, money, hassle, and hours of standing in line. I heartily recommend Rick's DVDs and books for spot-on, practical advice. The DVDs are particularly helpful in letting you see ahead of time what the country looks like and what to expect. This helps immensely in trip planning and eliminating confusion and unknowns.
- I first saw this on a local TV station. It's a wonderful film to own if you love Italy or are just curious about the country
- This is a combination of Mr. Steves' tv traveling programs in Italy. Planning a European trip I felt this was a must in deciding exactly where I wanted to go and what to see. My husband and I want to find some of the lesser known places as well as the well established places to visit on our trip. This is the type of thing Mr. Steves' is best at. This video was very helpful for that purpose.
- My husband and I went to Italy on our honeymoon and I got this great DVD as a souvenier - pictures can't capture it all and its impossible to write everything in a scrapbook! This way, we have a great visual reminder of the sights, food, history, and culture of Italy. I only use Rick Steves' guides and they haven't let me down yet!
- I watched this DVD before I went on a trip to Italy to learn about some of the things I wanted to see and and it was a great orientation. Now I enjoy watching it to remember the places I saw and to plan more trips to Italy.

- "Bump!: Florida"
Going South
Amos Lassen
The new "Bump!" travel video takes us the southern United States to the sunshine state of Florida and we visit Ft. Lauderdale, Miami Beach, and Key West.
The famous beach movie tells us that the boys are at Ft. Lauderdale, the spring break capital of the world. However, things have changed and the college kids are no longer around and gay men have taken their place. They come to relax but are still close to the wild gay life of nearby South Beach. The first thing we do is climb aboard the water taxi and look at the expensive homes and yachts along the inter-coastal waterway on our way to the heart of the Everglades to wrestle with an alligator. Then back to the mainland and Sebastian Street Beach, the most popular gay beach in the area. Of course we have to go skating at Gold Coast's weekly gay skating night which has been a tradition in the fort for thirty years. There are great GLBT guest houses in Ft. Lauderdale and we visit a sample and learn why life is so good there.
Miami Beach is next on our agenda and it has, of late, become a designated destination for us in the last twenty years. We get there as White Party Week is going on and the place is teeming with beautiful people. The gala at Cirque Blanc is wonderful but it is only a prelude to the main event, the big party, THR WHITE PARTY, at Vizcaya. We walk along the art deco lined streets of South Beach and make it to the opening night of Level, a new mega-hot party club. But there is one thing left that we have to do and that is to visit with Mr. Miami Beach, Michael Aller.
Heading even further south, we get the very bottom of the United States when we arrive at Key West, a place known for its warm gay and lesbian heritage. Captain Karen takes us on an all women Venus cruise and then back to the shore and the beach. Fantasy Fest is one of the highlights of the gay year. The ten day festival has been happening now for almost twenty-five years. Another big event in Key West occurs in February when women from all over the world come to participate in the Kelly McGillis flag football tournament. Key West also has a multitude of guest houses. The laid back lifestyle makes Key West one of the places to be and a must visit place for the GLBT traveler.

- "Bump!--Australia: Tasmania, Sydney and Queensland
A Trip to OZ
Amos Lassen
"Bump!" is back and this time we are going to the other side of the world--down under. Our friendly lesbian, Shannon McDonough shows us the best of the area and what it has to offer to the GLBT community.
We start in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Sydney, the center of Australian gay life and the home of the gay Mardi Gras. We visit the bars and coffee shops, relax on the gorgeous beaches and have a gay ole time.
Next up is "The Bottom of the World", Tasmania, a place few of us consider when we think about gay life. The locals are friendly and we find we were wrong in thinking that there is not much to do there. We go bush-whacking and have a ball.
Queensland is just exquisite. The beaches gleam like diamonds in the sun and the ocean seems to go on forever. Northern Australia is picturesque and filled with gay hotspots among which is a resort that is exclusively gay. However, the most fun is diving of the Great Barrier Reef.
Watching this episode of "Bump!" made we want to put it on my wish list for my next vacation.
