  1. The DVD was really good. Great color ect. I have a rather large TV and it showed well, but I was constantly thinking how much better it would be at the IMAX theater. I guess once you have watched a movie or show at the IMAX then it spoils their videos for home use a little. All in all thought, it was worth the watch.

  2. This is a fantastic armchair look at the Serengetti, a place I'll never see on my own and can only rely on professional cinematographers to make it live. It appeals to all ages and the photography is so vivid, it seems like the animals can come directly through the screen. James Early Jones is the perfect narrator.

  3. This was a great video if you believe in the Circle of Life. I watched it 3 times in one sitting because I wanted to see more. And each time I watched it, I noticed more detail and heard more facts! Should be viewed w/ low lighting in the room and you'll feel like you're on the Serengeti with James Earl Jones!

  4. The is why you buy blu-ray disk and Plasma TV. The images are off the charts if you are into nature and nature shows this is a must for your collections. AWESOME!!!

  5. XXXXX

The title of this review is what the narrator says at the beginning and end of this fantastic documentary (first shown in IMAX theatres) that profiles a place where the equation of life is as follows:

    (1) Herbivores eat plants.
    (2) Carnivores eat herbivores.

The place profiled is the Serengeti, a huge area of grassland in Tanzania, East Africa. The narrator is Darth Vader himself, James Earl Jones, whose voice adds another dimension to this mesmerizing and revealing film.

Here's a sampling of what you will see:

    (1) The Great Migration (a sight few have seen and considered a great wonder of the world)
    (2) "One of the natural wonders of the world"
    (3) One of the "most famous archaeological sites on Earth"
    (4) A sampling of millions of diverse creatures found here including the "horses of Africa"
    (5) The proud people who live here
    (6) Miracles of the Serengeti

My knowledge of the Serengeti before viewing this film was...nothing. I found this film a great and exciting way to be introduced to this important region of the world. You couldn't ask for better cinematography and photography.

I found the background music throughout to be interesting and unique.

What I especially liked was that the narrator did not attempt to overwhelm me with too many details. I got the impression that only the most important and interesting information was carefully selected and presented.

Finally, the DVD itself (the one released in 2005) is perfect in picture and sound quality. It has no extras.

In conclusion, there is indeed a place on this planet where it is still the morning of life and the great herds run free. This place has been captured for all to see in this extraordinary film!!

    (1994; 39 min; wide screen; 13 scenes)

  1. I purchased this DVD from about 3 years, and that was before the blowing up of DVD market. I was looking for a Santana DVD, and it was the only available one. It's a special style of relaxing music accompanied with amazing nature video clips. the idea is good, but it needs very special occasions to be viewed.
The picture quality is superb, but unfortunately the audio was set to stereo, which didn't complete the package. I think a 5.1 channel format surrounding the listener with those beautiful clips could make it surely better.

  2. It would have been better to buy a music CD instead of buying a DVD to listen to Santana music showing only some colored video clips of mother nature.

  3. This is a serious piece of "Visual Music", a work of fine art by one of the true masters of the form. You could call this a "drug-free trip", but it's also an experience of cinematic genius you may never see anywhere else (outside of maybe Jordan Belsen, can you dig it?)

David Fortney's footage is included as part of the Getty film library, and other top producers pay boucoup to use it. His unique techniques for motion-control, steadicam and optical special-effects are known as some of the best in the field. His other award-winning films include "EarthScapes" and "Timeless", an incredible time-lapse, slo-mo and aerial tour of our national parks. I've got the whole collection on VHS from years past, and am gathering the DVD's as well, now that Miramar is gone. Get 'em while you can!

To those who might be disappointed with it, I can understand. This kind of "art video" can be an acquired taste. And it wasn't specially remastered for 5.1, so it won't gratify the gear-heads either.

But for those of you who appreciate Carlos Santana's spiritual and visionary side, or (like me) don't self-medicate anymore (but still enjoy a good trip), I say, BUY IT NOW!

  4. As birds soar over lush landscapes, the images change to rippled sand dunes. Slowly birds soar above the clouds and then there are Salvador Dali like landscapes that blend back into skies filled with geese.

Then a wispy dance of smoke fills a dark room with playful patters that merge into a crystal sky as clouds move from the center of the screen and seems to swirl in circles above the earth. It is all quite imaginative. Soon the blue dissolves into a reflection of the sky. Swirls of light dance across a star-filled night and soon you are in the middle of a galaxy of stars. Swirling lights paint colors on planets and then return to the nothingness from which they appeared.

Next you enter a deep forest setting and creep below the underbrush as if you were a jaguar on the hunt. There are close-up views of leaves and the filming is magnificent. There are long sweeping views and the continuation from one scene to the next is blended with an extra sense of creativity. Swirling light in water phases into a reflection of trees and then the motion begins again. Like a bird, you fly across a marshland and then doves appear. Some of the scenes are magnificent in their natural wonder. Blue ferns contrast against a pink sky with trees ominously looming above. Blue water and green banks contrast with snow capped mountains. There are fields of flowers so beautiful, you can't imagine they exists in such a pristine condition.

The last section has water splashing all over the screen with a sense of wild abandon. In a frothy play the water splashes across the screen like diamonds tossed about by an angry water god. Torrents of water cascade over rocks and two surging bodies of water compete in a play for power.

Fingertips of water flow in slow motion like hands guiding the water onto rocks below. Images blend like a kaleidoscope of colors in a mesmerizing dance of nature and sound. Flames melt into a night sky and psychedelic lights swirl like stars dancing and spinning in tune with Santana's music. How can you ever see music in the same way after viewing this DVD? If music had motion, this is how it would dance.

I loved the cascades of glistening gold water. Then you roam in fields of delicate pink flowers and then follow as sparkly lights dance across a sky.

"Lightdance" is completely mesmerizing. I was going to read and occasionally glance at the screen and I ended up sitting in bed in a complete music trance and ended up playing this DVD three times in a row. I'd like to say this is a nature "music video" but it much more. It is an explosion of sound and color blended into inspiring scenes of natural beauty.

    ~The Rebecca Review

  5. People come to my house and ask to watch Light Dances over and over. It is a great rainy day time passer or a big party enhancer. The Santana music can't be beat and compiled with the video and designs it is awesome. Santana at their best.

  1. This was an awesome presentation and truly enjoyable! As a Native Bahamian I am proud of this "true true" depiction of the island of Eleuthera! It made me so home sick as well as gave me an even deeper appreciation for my rich heritage. (I am a Savannah Sound decendant!) Hope to see similar productions for every island! Highly recommended for anyone with an appreciation for well produced documentary with a down to earth simplistic flare!

  2. This is a delightful film made with love and honesty. This movie is very engaging, humourous, colourful and refreshing. A totally "must see" for people who yearn for island living and the simplier things in life.

  3. While some have referred to this film as a documentary, I'd prefer to call it a trip report. Nonetheless, it shows the filmmaker's keen sense of observation and carries a lighthearted humour from beginning to end - not without a much appreciated portion of self-irony. To keep it short: One of the most refreshing pieces of story telling the Bahamas has produced in a while! Watch out for more films by Kareem Mortimer!!

  4. I was disappointed in this dvd, it had the appearance of a hand made documentary.

It was a story of one young man look at his own island in the Bahamas, as he toured along in a SUV(that he couldn't drive because it was a stick shift) with only the camera man for company.

I have to admit the scenery is quite beautiful though.

  1. This is a great dvd but on some performances, mainly "P!$$ed off", her backup singers can barley be heard. As great as Angie Stone is on this DVD, the sound should have been checked before filiming. Another disappointment, No songs from Black Diamond were performed.

  2. Angie Stone rules and it's a shame she doesn't get the props she is due. Everytime I watch a live performance of her, I get more convinced that she will be classified as one of the greats of our era. This dvd is amazing, she sings all my faves and she sounds great on every song. For all Angie Stone fans, you need to get the Pure Sessions dvd, she really gave a funky performance in a small intimate setting. You'll feel like you were in the club. Everybody in the club looked like they were having a ball. Personally, I feel that other soul singers (jill Scott, Erykah Badu & Alicia Keys) cannot hold a candle to her. The only person that comes close is Jill Scott. Please support a true artist.

  1. Here, at least, we're in familiar territory. The first train trip, through Alaska, shows off the natural wonders and wildlife of the state. The Canadian transcontinental trip that follows, from Quebec City to Vancouver, --which I personally enjoyed 35 years ago,-- compresses four days and three nights of travel into fifteen minutes, so you do miss a lot; but what you see is enjoyable and worthwhile. The trips that follow, from Seattle to Chicago, NYC to Florida, NYC to San Francisco, and from LA to San Diego, provide a wonderful display of the immensely varied US scenery and may prompt you to call Amtrak for a reservation.

  2. I spent $15 for this train trip across North America, being a nature lover. It crams a supposed "trip" across North America into less than 60 minutes worth of time. And in that short time, it "travels" in Alaska, from Quebec in Canada to Vancouver, from Seattle to Chicago, from New York to Miami, from New York to San Francisco, and finally from San Francisco to San Diego. Each of these trips take less than 10 minutes; and they spend too much time on commenting about the TRAIN itself, such as the passengers, the food, the chefs, and they spend little time on the scenery itself. Don't get me wrong: it has several spectacular shots of North America, but very few are included...if you can afford to be disappointed, I guess, you could give this a try. I simply was expecting more for my buck.
