2 comments about Mozart Piano Concertos Nos. 13 & 20 - A Naxos Musical Journey.
- A Quick review of a disc that I thought was very enjoyable. You can't go wrong with a Mozart piano concerto and with 2 here, winners! The performances were very credible and delightful! What took me away was Salzburg! If I were to want to visit anywhere in Europe, this disc makes me want Salzburg! Summer looks quite delightful, but winter looks like a wonderland! The scenery chosen is quite breathtaking in it's scope. I am glad to have this disc in my library!Great performance and great scenery, what more can one ask???
- I purchased this DVD because I'm a big fan of Mozart's piano concerti and I have fond memories of past trips to Salzburg.
I was not disappointed. This tour of what I believe to be the most picturesque city in Europe is breathtaking. The first concerto - which is in a major key - is the backround music for scenes of Salzburg in Spring. The city is alive with flowers, sunshine and joy. The second concerto - which is in a minor key - frames the city in the middle of winter and at night. Snow is everywhere. The Salz River is frozen and the natives skate, play and ski on the river's surface. If you love great music and you love the incomparable scenery of Austria get this DVD!!!!!

4 comments about The Australian Outback.
- This is the most beautiful video and music sequence I have ever seen. A stunning audio/video presentation. The producers should be commended for their efforts.
The Australian Outback DVD is awe-inspiring. Michael Scott Lees is one of the best landscape photgraphers Australia has ever known and Rivertribe Music is breathtaking. I whole heartedly recommend this program. You will be blown away by the wonders of Australia and its diverse landscape.
- The photos are beautiful, but they're stills, not video footage. That gives this DVD the feel of a coffee table book set to music. The music is moving and appropriately spiritual, but the experience feels bounded by the photo frames. I didn't get a feel of the real Outback - more a glossy set of postcards. As a homesick Australian, I was disappointed.
- This is a slide show presentation of some pictures of Australia - the Outback is a misnomer as the rainforest in Queensland is included along with a number of ocean beach pictures. The Outback is the outback NOT the coast line of Australa or the tropical Rain Forest.
None of the pictures are labeled so you have absolutely no idea where they were taken and the slide show is accompanied by some ecletic music which is a further distraction.
I would give it zero stars if I could. This slide show would be much better presented in a book - not sitting in front of a TV with the camera zooming in or out on the same still picture and then going to the next one.
I have been to Australia and am familiar with the Alice Springs area and the tropical rainforst in Queensland as well as many other locations in this beautiful country. This is not the way to see Australia. There are many excellent books with photographs at least as good (if not better) than those shown here and you can turn the pages at will staying on one picture as long as you want. In a book they tell you where the picture was taken - no idea while viewing this slide show and I found nothing in the enclosed material that gave you that information.
A total and complete disappointment.
Richard

2 comments about Bach Violin Concertos - A Naxos Musical Journey.
- ...you get Dolby Digital or DTS quality sound! Not only do you get the Violin Concerto in E Major, BMV 1042, Violin Concerto in A Minor, BWV 1041, Double Violin Concerto in D Minor, BWV 1043 and Air on the G String in excellent audio quality which surpasses CD's, you also get stunning seaside vistas, fountains, statues, vineyards, ancient streets and hillside churches and the Italian countryside. I would just love to travel Europe but due to the excessive cost that is not possible right now. ...I get beautiful music and high quality video of all the places I'd love to visit right into my home to watch with my family. The only problem is which Naxos Journey to take? I couldn't decide so I purchased all six and love them all but the Mozart, Vivaldi and Spanish Festival are our favorites.
Highly recommended.
- Designed for the ill-fated Laser Disc format, the series of DVDs titled "A Naxos Musical Journey" is now represented by the first six offerings issued by DVD International: (DVDI 0991) with three of his works and the scenery of four parts of Italy, (DVDI 0992) with his "Water Music" and "Fireworks" Suites and the scenery of parts of England, (DVDI 0993) with the music of several composers [only one of which is Italian], (DVDI 0994) with his Symphonies No. 49 and 28 and three overtures and the scenery of the Southern Tyrol and Austria, (DVDI 0995) with the music of Chabrier, Glinka, Massenet, and Rimski-Korsakov , and finally (DVDI 0996) with his "Four Seasons" and a Concerto in D minor and the scenery of northern Europe and Scotland.
It is strange that native composers were not chosen in so many cases, especially in the one dedicated to Spain where we have two Russian and two French selections, however good they might be. But the most famous Swiss music ever written was composed by Rossini, so what the hey! First the minuses. These sets were designed for the music and the visual without any reference to specifics. By this I mean, there are no subtitles to let you know where in Europe you are or what music is being played. Since there is a "Random Order" option, your player will not display the track being shown. I found this quite annoying at first viewing and had to keep my eye on the back of the DVD case to try to find where I was musically--where I was geographically was quite impossible. Now I am told by a gentleman from DVD International that many persons have already commented on this lack of features; and I am told that all future releases will remedy what the producers did not but what many viewers did consider a problem. As for what we DO have, it is marvelous. The music is played competently to splendidly by European groups such as the Capella Istropolitana, the Czecho-Slovak Radio Symphony, and other players familiar to owners of Naxos CD recordings. As for the video portion, I cannot praise it too highly, except for my not being told where on earth such beauty exists. When the titles are added, this series will make a fantastic teaching tool for geography periods in the lower grades (why not let the tiny tots learn about the beauty of the world and of its great music at the same time?) and even for higher-class restaurants to play for diners. Come to think of it, even the untitled releases will work beautifully in the latter case.
