  1. If you've been to Graceland, then you've probably written on the wall, and this wonderful book brings back all those good memories! I laughed and cried at the graffiti Wright has collected.

  2. This brought back so many great memories of our last trip to Graceland. What a clever book!

  3. If you've been to Graceland, this book will bring back wonderful memories. It's what Graceland's all about: Elvis fans communing with Elvis. I've been to Graceland, I've written on the wall, and I've read the wall. It's funny, touching, slightly goofy, in loving memory graffiti, and this book captures that spirit. It's a great little addition to any Elvis collection.

  1. Though I currently live in Atlanta, I grew up near Huntsville, which is in the heart of the Tennessee Valley. This guide, which I received as a gift, took me back to my childhood roots, as well as showed me some new sights that I didn't even know existed. This book disproves the theory that there's nothing to do in Alabama/Tennessee. From the stereotypical Civil War reenactments and bluegrass festivals to exploring Huntsville's Space and Rocket Center, this book has a wide variety of activities. Scenic photos are supported by colorful descriptions for all 52 events. I highly recommend this book for anyone who just moved to Huntsville, Madison, Athens, Nashville, Chattanooga, or anywhere in the area, or to anyone traveling through the Tennessee Valley looking to explore.

  2. The Frews know travel. They were raised around the Huntsville area and know the area like the backs of their hands. I know the family and they are wonderful folks who enjoy sharing places and activities with people. 52 weekends in the Tennessee Valley shows the many adventures you can have in Alabama and Tennessee. The photographs are stunning, and they take you into the action. A really good book that shows the variety the area can offer.

  1. When reading a book about Tennessee ghosts I try to keep in mind the fact that I am naturally going to run across several stories that I have come into contact with on more than one occasion. Being a native of the Volunteer State and a ghost book enthusiast it is just natural that I would immediately purchase any book that I find on the subject of Tennessee ghosts and I have therefore read many of the more common stories time and time again. I do find though that each author does usually give the stories that are so familiar a spin of their own and that does always help me to enjoy the book. Lynne Hall has indeed added her personal touch to many of these stories but despite her best efforts some of these stories just do not belong in a ghost book although they would fit nicely into some of her other books.

The book starts out with an old Native-American legend that I have heard until I just want to pull my hair out every time I come across it. Hall does add a bit at the end that does help this story fit better into the book but as is the case all too often the possible ghosts in this story are included almost as an afterthought. She does a pretty good job with the history of the haunt or haunted locations except for a few questionable historical assertions but the ghosts seem to be lost in all of the historical verbiage. I have always argued that giving a basic history of any ghost story is just as important as describing the haunt itself because that history gives the reader a far clearer understanding of what is supposed to be going on. There is however a delicate balancing act that is required in order for the reader to understand the history and at the same time get a feel for the haunting. In some of these stories that balance is badly lacking and in more than one instance the haunt is give only a paragraph or two of copy.

Some stories however are much more balanced and there are a few gems to be found here. For example, I really liked the chapter about President and Mrs. Jackson along with the story of Hurricane Mills and Knoxville's Bijou Theater. These stories were well balanced and included several eyewitness accounts describing the supernatural events associated with the haunting. I would have preferred more recent eyewitness testimony that came from identifiable sources but sometimes anonymity is a necessary evil when relating stories of this sort.

Overall this author has a pleasant and very readable writing style and I generally enjoyed this book except for the stories where the ghost was completely buried by history. Had she chosen her stories better she might well have avoided this problem because some her choices gave her very little ghostly activity to work with. On the other hand there are some other stories where a little more research could have produced much longer chapters filled with a lot more ghostly activity. Rotherwood Mansion for example was handled in less than four pages leaving out completely the stories of demon hounds that have been reported on the estate. Even with the flaws though this is still a reasonably good book but not a great one. As Maxwell Smart used to say, "She missed it by that [ ] much.

  1. We just received Historic Photos of Nashville and who knew that Nashville had such a rich history. This book has hundreds of photographs of Nashville covering nearly 200 years and is just the right coffee table book size.
Historic Photos of Nashville is well-made, educational, and just subtle enough to make a real an elegant statement no matter where it's placed. This is a must have for anyone who loves Nashville History.
We're ordering more copies to give as holiday gifts to all of our friends.
    Joe

  2. I recently received "Historic Photos of Nashville" -- what a top quality book throughout! Over 200 beautifully printed pages, depicting scenes from Nashville history since the mid-1800's. These extraordinary old photographs have been found in various archives, and provide a great historical representation of the people, places, and events that have occurred in Nashville. This book was intended as a gift for a friend -- but looks like I'll have to order another one, because this one has become MINE!!

  3. I bought this book for my fathers 80th birthday gift.
It arrived in perfect condition and on time and we
even discussed it last night. He is a native nashvillian
and my sister gave him a television set and he hasn't taken
that out of the box but carries the book around all day,
every day enjoying photos of the past.
I and my family love, love it and I appreciate the great service
that I get when I order from Amazon. I work for the library
and can order here with an employees discount but prefer ordering
from Amazon instead. Thanks, Vickie L. Jones

  4. "A gorgeous book, these photographs of one of the world's most interesting cities makes this book a real joy for the photography collector."

  1. I wanted to use this book to plan some interesting stops along and off of I-40. However, there are minimal maps and unless you look up every single town in each division of Tennessee, you have no idea if they are anywhere near I-40 or not. When I have purchased from the "Off the Beaten Path" guides in the past, they had maps with the places discussed marked at least in some way. I frankly don't know how you would much use this book to plan a trip across Tennesee. It would only be helpful if you lived there and wanted to explore around a segment of the state.
