5 comments about Complete Idiot's Guide to New Orleans.
- I thought the title of this book was a joke. It's not: this book really is for idiots! I can do without all the silly worksheets for picking a hotel or deciding on an airline, or advice on what to wear on the plane or how to pack my bag! And this goes on and on, page after page... The type of information I do want (New Orleans' history, culture, etc.) is very limited. The book is full of hints on how to save money. Well, here's mine: don't buy this book and save $12.76! Get a Lonely Planet Guide or The Haunted City by Joy Dickinson (specially for Anne Rice fans), which is great fun to read and really gets you into the right mood...
- I used this book on buisines trip to New Orleans. I found it extremely helpful, especially because I had not traveled much previously. The information comes from a long-time resident, cabby,& carriage-driver. I found his food recommendations invaluable, and I liked the background information he provided.
- The author is also a cab driver in New Orleans (and has his own web page), and he really knows his stuff. It's obvious that he had to constrain his enthusiasm and knowledge to conform to the "Idiot's Guide" editorial format. Vast compilation of street smarts and long-time resident information is contained in this book. I used it before the trip, and brought the mini Rough Guide on the trip, and had a great-and-safe time. This is a city that you don't even want to look lost in, so use these two books and you'll be fine.
- I purchased this book from the front seat of Big Rays cab in the Big Easy . He is a wild driver but his book is right on . It is a good start ,lots of "Local Tips" ,and if you also ask locals who are friendly and helpful you will have a great time and will stay out of trouble . Ann Rice fans stay out of the graveyards at night!
- i went to new orleans last spring break with five friends, and we used this book as our primary guide to the city. it helped us pick a fantastic (and fantastically inexpensive) hotel and some really great things to do. we ended up having the time of our lives. this book is so helpful and well-organized! if it could help a bunch of clueless kids plan a great trip, it could be great for anyone.

5 comments about Maryland Delaware Atlas & Gazetteer (State Atlas & Gazetteer).
- It's Wednesday evening. You're trying to think of something new and different to do with you weekend. Your loved one(s) are bored and restless and want to do something different. It's all up to you... What to do...
If you've been there before, there is one solution - this book of great maps. In addition to the detailed accuracy of the maps, there is a great section that details locations of interest, places to go, things to do, phone numbers you can call to make arrangements and get info. This could be the book that saves your weekend! Stored in your car, it could also be the book that get's you where you want to go without driving to a gas station to get directions. If you've tried that lately, you know that your chances of getting good directions to far-off places are slim to none. I have purchased several of these books - one for each state that I frequent. Whenever I want to get away, I take them out and see what I can find. We have visited covered bridges, homes built by Frank Lloyd Wright, cliffs and caves, museums and all kinds of historic landmarks. For the price of a nice meal, you will have a travel companion for many years to come. While you can get maps on the internet, most of us still don't have that at our disposal when we are on the road. This book will be your guide!
- I originally used Delorme road maps of NH, VT, ME & NY when I hiked extensively in the High Peaks of New England. They were EXTREMELY helpful in navigating the confusing mess of old logging roads, etc.
I bought this map while planning a cycling trip from Virginia Beach to Philadelphia. While it looks like it's probably the best thing out there which would give road maps of the entire state, it doesn't show as much detail as a local map would.
- These state gazetteers make traveling the back roads a pleasure, and is a great value from Amazon.
- The only atlas I've found which shows the whole penninsula. That makes it easy to find directions around traffic without using two or three maps. Wonderful for those of us who know the major routes but always wondered to where the side routes lead.
- We bought this map/gazetteer in preparation for our trip to Maryland. I am satisfied with the quality of the atlas, it's easy to read and well organized.

5 comments about Moon Handbooks Peru.
- I live in Peru and run a bed and breakfast here. My past experience with guidebooks is that they were great as long as you were out of the country, but as soon as you arrive you were better off asking the locals. Here I am a local and am constantly asked questions about lodging and accommodation in other parts of Peru, I find myself turning to the Moon guidebook in order to make recommendations. I have found the historical information accurate and well written while the recommendations on how to be a respectful and responsible traveler remind one that tourism can be a positive activity. The recommended establishments are described precisely as they are.
- We carried both the Moon Guide and the Rough Guide on our trip, and we consistently found ourselves going to the Moon Guide for references while in country. For us, the recommendations for both restaurants and places to stay were to our complete satisfaction (prices had changed noticably in some instances, however this is the nature of tourism, isn't it!) I felt that Ross and Renee's personal perspective on many things gave the book a most enjoyable flavor that I just didn't get from the Rough Guide. For example, one of the highlights of our trip turned out to be a stay in the village of Llachon on Lake Titicaca, a place that Ross and Renee had experienced and described in rather personal terms, but also a place which wasn't mentioned in the Rough Guide. This was one of those places that was off the beaten path, and which travelors like us were looking for insights to in our guide book. I should also note that I had several questions that I emailed to Ross and Renee prior to our trip (using the email addresses provided in the book) and I always got replies back quickly - a very nice personal touch! Finally, there are many articles scattered through the book in which special topics of interest are discussed in thought provoking terms ("Gold and Mahogany:Profit and Loss" for example), and besides making good reading, I think added tremendously to the overall experience and understanding we had in seeing the country.
- The Moon Handbook on Peru was a very well written, informative, funny, entertaining publication. You usually do not find all of those traits in a guide book. While traveling in Peru, we used the book as a bible. Every suggestion the writers made turned out to be a winner. Great book, great trip!
- The Moon handbook for Peru seems to be a good resource overall, however if you are planning on trekking in the Andes, this book won't be a whole lot of help. Infact, most books are outdated when it comes to the available treks, so do alot of online research.
- This is a terrific book. I carried it all over the Sacred Valley in Peru, visiting Cusco, Pisaq, Aguas Calientes and Macchu Pichu. The authors' recommendations for hotels and restaurants were excellent, and I found the book to be informative and well-written overall. Additionally I emailed several questions to the authors prior to the trip, and they were responsive and helpful. I recommend this book to anyone visiting Peru.

5 comments about Panoramic Colombia.
- As a recent traveler to Colombia I found this book to be a truly great reminder of my trip. The wide angle photography gives you a pespective that can only be beaten by being there. It feels like you are truly in the picture. I also like the book because it doesn't focus on one area or on one type of geography. Countyside and City are equally represented. As are the mountains, the coastal regions and the jungle.
- We purchased the Spanish version of this book while in Colombia. It had been recommended to us by other Colombians who felt it was the best photographic representation thus far of their country. The content is spectacular in that it captures pristine landscapes, beautiful seascapes and candid events. The photo quality itself is slightly imperfect in sharpness and lighting (sometimes the faces are in shadows), but this is understandable with the use of the panoramic lens. I have mostly enjoyed the corresponding eloquent citations from authors describing their impressions of, feelings about or experiences in Colombia.
- Probably no country in South America has a greater geographical variety than Colombia. In 2002 I spent a month exploring Colombia (although the terrorists-FARC problem seriously restricted my movement). "Panoramic Colombia" helped me to remember, vividly, what I had seen and get a glimpse the many parts of Colombia I needed to return to see.
Using a roundshot, 360 degree camera, Villegas has done a great job of showcasing the cities and natural wonders of Colombia. Each color photograph captures mountains, jungles, coastal areas, rainforests, moorlands, towns and vibrant cities. Each geographical region is delineated by a map (a nice touch). The reproduction of color is a notch below excellent. Most of the two page panoramic photos are 30 inches long, however, there are twenty photos that fold out into three pages, over 45 inches long! "Panoramic Colombia" is an excellent introduction to Colombia. A great book for anyone who is going to visit, or who has visited, this diverse country. "Panoramic Colombia" would make a fantastic gift for anyone from Colombia or interested in this Latin American gem. Highly Recommended
- perfect and beautiful. Any time you want to visit a world of difference, beauty -go to this book. I would reccomend this book to any serious cofee table book enthusiast. Weather you have been to Colombia or not, you will like it!
- This is honestly one of the best ever depictions of such a rich country, not only in culture, art, architecture, history and geographical variety, but in the people, the spirit, the colors and the sharp contrasts that this beautiful country has.
The photographer exposes an intimate and personal view that allows us to be inside the picture, as if living it ourselves. He has entered areas and dangerous zones to show us those existing contrasts, and has exposed us to the magnificense of this varied country. It is a perfect example of being able to see through someone else's eyes, and how beautiful it is.

3 comments about Traveling Literary America: A Complete Guide to Literary Landmarks.
- I'm sure I'll be using this book as a reference for many years to come. If you do any kind of book-related traveling, you'll be glad you picked up a copy.
Welborn crossed the U.S. several times while researching the book, and her diligence shows. The guide is loaded with excellent facts and useful tips, and it couldn't be easier to navigate.
The book lists over 200 homes, museums, exhibits, memorials, etc., and it's divided into sections by region of the country. It includes historical information about each author and his or her work, as well as little-known tidbits that will make your journeys infinitely more interesting.
If you're looking for a thorough reference on author homes and other literary landmarks, this is the book for you.
- Anyone who loves books-which presumeably includes anyone reading this review website, will love Traveling Literary America. It is a hefty (more than 500 pages) and features more than 200 literary sites in nearly all 50 states, including author homes, memorials, poetry walks, exhibits and museums. What's more, author B.J. Welborn offers descriptions of towns associated with a particular writer (Jack Kerouac's Lowell, Mass; Willa Cathers "Catherland" in red Clouod, Neb); unusual literary treasures (Yiddish Center in Amherst, Mass); art colonies (MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire); hiking trails (Edna St. Vincent Millay Poetry Trail in New York), and sidebars on literary movements (Romanticism, the Beat Generation). There is a lot of fascinating stuff in here.
- Ever since I visited Cross Creek (Rawling's home), I've been on the look out for more author's homes or related sites to visit. It was such a great experience to see her place after reading her books.
Now with Traveling Literary America, readers can visit places associated with Dr. Seuss, Mark Twain, Jack London, Edgar Allan Poe and other admired authors. Besides such well known authors, he includes more offbeat literary figures such as poet Joyce Kilmer's home (New Brunswick, NJ) and songwriter Woody Guthrie's birthplace (Okemah, Okla).
I can't wait to see some of these places and having the book on hand allows me to fit them in wherever I travel in the US.
