2 comments about Arlington National Cemetery : Shrine to America's Heroes.
- This is by far the best text devoted to the history of Arlington national cemetery I've seen. It begins with a detailed hisory of how the Washington-Lee family aquired the property, and the government seizure during the Civil war.. The property was used as a burial ground in part to prevent Robert E. Lee family from returning. The book goes on to list numerous notables now buried there and includes a brief but informative biography of each, most have pictures of the gravesite. Finally the book lists the many memorials inside and around the cemetery and the offical requirements for burial at Arlington.. A Fascinating book, I've read it several times and find something new every time I pick it up. Well worth purchasing for the history buff, or the casual tourist who wants to learn more about our most important national shrine.
- I first found this book in it's first edition in 1994 after a trip to D.C. After picking it up from the library, I really wished that I had it when I was in D.C. I read it from cover to cover and learned so much about Arlington. I picked up the second edition during a visit to ANC in September, 2001. Every grave marker and memorial of renown is mentioned and the history behind the larger monuments is very good. It would be really nice if color pictures accompanied the text. I hope that Mr. Peters continues to update the book every now and then.

- Terrific photographs. Ample coverage of the usual monuments and tourist must-stops. Refreshing attention is also paid to DC neighborhoods that make the city a great place to live as well as visit.
Page #54 is excellent.

4 comments about Boston: A Topographical History, Third Enlarged Edition.
- This book is ideal for anyone looking for a general account of Boston history. It acquants one with many of the important stages in the development of the city; covering the period from the colonial to approximately 1970. The information regarding the colonial period is excellent, as is the book itself. It is not specific, but provides an introduction to many great way points for further study.
- This is very good book about the City of Boston, as it was developed in stages. The Book explains the development and expansion of the city in time and according to location. It is very vivid and especially if you have been a pedestrian offen on the streets of Boston, It starts to make sense and starts to give joy. As I read the book I started to appreciate more and more the efforts of BRA and Back Bay Society.unfortunately before they acted quite a number of beautiful structures has gone.Book has very extensive history from 1700 to 1970's and than it is summary or may be it is a living history for you. There are numerous pictures but the number of pictures is not as much as those you may find in other types of books, like Boston in Pictures, etc. After all it is a narrative book but there is sufficient amount of pictures to help you visulize. I wish a more comprehensive book were to be produces to show in same pages all the developments, similar to "Boston, Than and Now" but with more older pictures and more story as this book has. Read this book and sit across the Charles on Cambridge Side than you start to see Trimont, Mill Dam, Neck. It is great book.
- This book is a fascinating account of how Boston grew and developed. It stays on the point, is concise, and really improves the understanding of this city. A must read for a Bostonian.
- I first read this book when I moved to Boston in the mid-1980's. Only after reading this book did I understand why I always got lost driving around the city. The old cowpath myth is far too banal compared to the real cause of the city's twisting mysteries: the perpetual reshaping of the city's landmass begun during the Mass Bay colony and continuing today. There's a reason the Big Dig happened here.
I love this book. This is history told from a unique perspective and by a real pro. Whitehill's reputation as a distinguished historian is what initially drew me to this book. His skill as a storyteller and his dry New England wit kept me thoroughly engaged. I have re-read this book many times. It is at the top of my books-to-read-about-Boston list. I always recommend it to any new Bostonian I meet.
I wish the old man had lived to see the Big Dig in all its engineering glory. His history of this grand project would have been a true delight.

2 comments about Ecuador: A Climbing Guide.
- Yossi's knowledge of the area, routes and local contacts is as good as guide books of the area are. Better route descriptions are always a plus, but with changing conditions these are as decent as you can get. Worth the price.
- Not a very comprehensive guide to climbing, found much of the information dated.

1 comments about In the Heart of the Amazon.
- I read Nick Gordons book whilst travelling from South America back to the UK. I didn't want the book to end, and when I finished it, I was left wanting more.
Nick Gordon has a magical ability to tell a story. From the full gory details of the tarantula to the ghostly glimpse of a panther. He also lets you into the details of the human side of filming in the amazon... its frustrations and joys, the characters of his film crew, and the cultures of the indigenous tribes.
I could hardly put it down, and just wish there was a sequel telling of his time tracking and filming the rare wild cats of the amazon.

- ...where to go in central and south america, then read this through. As with all Lonely Planets book, it got lots of information! I want to go to Guatemala or Ecuador, but I didn't really know too much about any of these countries. Reading this through helped me. I'm going to BOTH!
- This is an excellent reference for the South American traveler. It shouyld be required reading for the newcomer and experienced traveler
- If you have never traveled to developing nations in out of the way places then you might find this book useful. However, you can find much of this information through the U.S. CDC and W.H.O. websites.
Most times the happy little diseases or maladies that travelers take home are things that cause diarrhea. This book clearly lacks information related to many important aspects of food handling, processing, and stomach wellness. However if you want to know about exotic illnesses you will probably never get than maybe this book is helpful.
I would not recommend this book.

1 comments about Patagonia.
- An excellent book on one the lesser known parts of the world.Great photographs, and unlike most pictorial books, well written text too. After seeing this book I believe that Patagonian landscapes are the most sublime, pristine and breathtakingly beautiful landscapes in the world, and my resolve to visit Patagonia one day has become stronger. A must-have possession for nature loving travellers, armchair or otherwise.
