  1. This is the worst city guide book I've ever bought. The maps have an atrocious lack of detail. The info in the book sounds like it came straight out of the stack of brochures that can be picked up at any tourist board office. And the pictures look like they are from the 80s. This book was a major disappointment!

  1. During our sailing trip from Martinique to Venezuela we used this book especially because of the detailed and useful information about small harbours and beautyful beaches. I can recommend it very strongly.

  1. is all that you will find in this book! This guy advises you to get your tickets by listening to time share pitches! Not only is that time consuming, it's unethical! Unless you want some good laughs, DO NOT buy this book

  2. On a recent peak summer season visit to Orlando's overwhelming and expensive collection of theme parks and tourist traps, we found this book of tips, secrets and hints by an Orlando native to be useful, though not always applicable. Some advice was dead-on perfect (parking secrets & ponchos), other hints were intermittently so (how to avoid long-lines - sorry Rick, even at 11pm, Space Mountain was nearly an hour in the left hand line), and still others nearly useless (discount or free tickets demand strong sales resistance).

The individual ride attraction reviews alone were far more honest and informative than the brief discriptions in the official guide maps. Worth the price of the book alone, we referred to them often throughout our visit - especially when trying to decide if the wait for Back to the Future was worth it (it was).

  3. This should have been titled "Universal Studios Like a Pro" (in fact, the later edition is "Orlando Like a Pro"). The author spends most of the book pointing out how much more he likes Universal Studios over Disney World. Not only are his tips about Disney World useless, but many of his 'facts' are dead wrong (for example,'like a pro' he tells his readers that the stretching room in the Haunted Mansion ride at Disney World doesn't use elevators, which it does. He erroneously calls the Enchanted Tiki Room attraction "Tropical Serenade", etc). An insult to Disney fans and a poor guide book. Thumbs down to Foder's for not checking his 'facts' for accuracy.

1 comments about Rio De Janeiro.
  1. I lived in Rio in the 60's and have great memories of my years there. I lived on Copacabana beach and went to school in Leblon and spent most of my afternoon and weekends on Ipanema beach. This book's beautiful photography and interesting text were everything that I hoped they would be in that they capture the very best of Rio, the places as well as the events that make Rio de Janeiro the wonderful and magical city that it was then and seems to still be today. I would recommend this book to anyone, whether or not they have ever been there. If they have not, maybe they will be inspired to take a vacation there someday.

  1. I am from the Blue Ridge Mountains and I think this magazine was great. It has alot of information about the people, parks and places of the Blue Ridge. There are tons of pictures and suggestions of places to visit. READ IT!

  2. Ron Fisher wrote this "bookazine" in a very plain, homespun style which causes one to learn tons of information about people and places of the Blue Ridge without realizing it. There was too-scant mention of the region's physiography and natural history; however, once I got far enough inside to notice that, I was already sufficiently captivated by the tales of human history and folklore that the book was well worth finishing. Like Fisher, I cruised the Blue Ridge Parkway on a cool, misty weekday; and he captured the peaceful mood perfectly in his description of that jaunt. Whether from watching a Salem Buccaneers minor league game, interviewing Foxfire writers, or recording the tales of an elderly wood whittler, the hundreds of micro-stories of Blue Ridge folk life come out well done. Of course, as is the Geographic's gold standard, the photography is splendid. Any high school or college student writing about the Appalachian way of life must have this work in his reference list. And I strongly recommend this book for anyone planning a driving trip (off the interstates!) through western Virginia, western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee or far northern Georgia.

  1. These folks at Compass American have put together a great, readable book about a diverse state. Kudos to contributing writer Dan Stivers for his offbeat, often hilarious introduction to my eclectic hometown of Ann Arbor (ex: WEATHER: Winters can live up to Michigan's former motto of Water Winter Wonderland, or be marked by week after week of single-digits and howling winds--a sunless horror, devoid of joy or hope.). The best book on Michigan I've yet to read, and I've read a few -
