  1. These folks at Compass American have put together a great, readable book about a diverse state. Kudos to contributing writer Dan Stivers for his offbeat, often hilarious introduction to my eclectic hometown of Ann Arbor (ex: WEATHER: Winters can live up to Michigan's former motto of Water Winter Wonderland, or be marked by week after week of single-digits and howling winds--a sunless horror, devoid of joy or hope.). The best book on Michigan I've yet to read, and I've read a few -

  1. The charm of this book is the way the author describes the history and background of the state. It is more than just facts. Her descriptions of the state make one want to go to Oklahoma!

  2. This is a well-written book and worthwhile for what it contains, but what it does not include is inexplicable. What about Ada, Queen City of the Chicksaw Nation? It's on the map in the book (as it should be) but no mention of it whatsover in the text. This lovely town is important to Oklahoma's history and worth a visit with its many historic buildings and turn-of-the-century downtown.

  3. Oklahoma doesn't get much tourist attention, so a guidebook to the pleasures of traveling there is most welcome. This is far from a complete guide, but rather a potpourri of places to visit, eat, and stay.

The book divides Oklahoma into seven regions and covers the attractions of each region, especially in small towns and rural areas. Down-home, long-established restaurants and bed-and-breakfasts are well-described. Sidebars sprinkled liberally through the text provide a historical overview of Oklahoma, especially of its cowboy and Indian heritage.

There is no Grand Canyon or Yosemite in Oklahoma. The natural attractions are modest. For those from more congested states, the charm of Oklahoma is open empty country and friendly people, clear blue skies, and weather that is pretty good on the average -- but the weather in Oklahoma is rarely average. "The immensity of the plains can exhilarate or overwhelm travelers," says the author. That's about right. Oklahoma is a good place to take a random drive down a country road. Amidst the endless prairie, the oil wells, and the wheat fields, there's usually a valley oasis of woodland, a rocky mesa, one of Oklahoma's big man-made lakes, or an old town with a restaurant that features chicken-fried steak and mashed potatoes. This book will give you some ideas on places to go and things to do.

  4. I had to travel to Oklahoma for a business trip, and as i often do i like to spend a extra day seeing some of the local sites. I took a side trip to Guthrie, and really had a slice of history wich was just what i was looking for. I would have never done this, if i had not read this book. So for me, it was a gem.

2 comments about BAJA TO PATAGONIA.
  1. The book is better titled "Patagonia to Baja" since the adventures begin at the tip of the continent and work their way back to Baja. The book is divided into 9 adventures which the author and his wife experienced in Chile (4), Argentina, Bolivia, Venezuela, Costa Rica, and Baja California (for this one, a friend joined him instead of his wife). Each story was exciting and informative. The trips to Chile and Argentina were done without a guide service, while the other trips were guided trips. These were trekking and sea kayaking trips (they camped-out instead of staying in hotels). At times I felt as if I were there with them. I'm planning a South American adventure in the future and found this book to be valuable in giving me insights into this part of the world.

  2. I have been to many of the places covered by Mr. Rice in "Baha to Patagonia." I picked this book up as a little travel reading for my last trip which took me down through southern Patagonia.

My review is weather which apparently followed him around. This made every short story (and I mean every one) an epic, and the reader cannot help but feel elated the author must have done something really really bad in the past in order for him to be followed by such storms. I, on the other hand, had almost next guy, but way too many words are dedicated to how hungry he and his wife are at the end of the day.

    3) His wife's fear. At one point, he mentioned how scared she is, and then goes on to say that she had even jumped out of an airplane. Well, I commend her on her parachuting experience, but many women accomplished this feat, and I found it did have knowledge on the flora and fauna within many of the areas he visited. He also did paint a fairly good picture for the reader on the varied environments. This did have substance, unfortunately, the shock value techniques of his storms seemed to drown it out.

  1. This book was published in April of 2004, but in a five week trip to Panama in June and July I found it to be less accurate and less complete than my 4 year old Lonely Planet Central America on a Shoestring. We even encountered one listee in Panama who expressed doubts that Ulysses had even returned to Panama to update the book. Get Lonely Planet and supplement it with Nature in Panama.

  1. This book suggests plenty of fun activities - from authors who know where to find the most romantic spots. For couples of all ages and lifestyles, this guide has something to suit every taste and budget. Competing "romantic" guidebooks I've seen are little more than a listing of expensive restaurants and hotels, but Hunter's Romantic Weekends guidebooks are for everyone. Quaint inns & delightful restaurants are included for their high romantic appeal - not their high price tag. Includes Charleston & its barrier islands, the Outer Banks (Roanoke, Hatteras and Nags Head), and Savannah, perhaps the most romantic city in the US
