  1. This book is very comprehensive as far as cheap Seattle eats. I have yet to discover a restaurant in the book that is below average. Bon appetite!

  2. My wife and I always kept the first edition of this wonderful restaurant guide in the car, and we are just as happy with this newer addition.

Although I grew up in Seattle, we've lived about 45 minutes out of town for over 20 years, and it's hard to keep up with the restaruant scene when we return "home" sporadically. We're the kind of people who prefer to avoid fast food joints and chains, and being school teachers, we're always looking for a good deal. On top of that, we're always open for something off the beaten path. This guide has never failed to tip us off to a satisfying dining experience.

We recently attended a performance in West Seattle, and checked out "Cheap Eats" for some family-friendly restaurants in that area, since we had three kids along with us. We had it narrowed down to three possibilities, but the kids decided on a delightful Italian restaurant. Good food, good price, and great atmosphere for all of us.

Fortunately, many of our favorites from the first edtion survived in the new book. One of them is The Sunlight Cafe in the Roosevelt area, where we can always count on a tasteful vegetarian meal.

This guide has two helpful indexes in the back, one for the type of cuisine--whether it be Japanese, Thai, or Italian--and the other for listings by Seattle neighborhoods. The main body of the book has the restaurant reviews listed alphabetically. The reviews do a helpful job of describing the menu, what's good and what's not, the atmosphere, hours, whether or not credit cards and checks are accepted, and if live music is available.

If you're in Seattle, get this one and keep it in the car!

  3. I visit Seattle enough that I needed to know where I could get decent food at a decent price - this really fits the bill. Some of these places have nondescript exteriors, and so you would expect run-of-the-mill eats - but I tried four suggestions and found them all to be places with good food, fast food, and reasonably priced. Easily saved enough in two days to pay for the book.

  4. Folks, this is a fun guide that can aid native Seattleites and visitors alike. I've used it many times to get a good, reasonably (or dirt cheap) bite to eat in an often expensive town.
The cool thing is, you can look in the index for categories of food (say, Barbecue or Breakfast), restaurant names, or even better, neighborhoods. That makes it a fun "let's check out this neighborhood" guide also!
A worthy purchase. I've worn mine out!

  1. The book is a fun read and reminds me of the things that many men of author's age tend to go through around career, job, family, realization of their children growing to be adults, and how deftly he handled those issues. I wish men in my life could have handled them as bravely and with as much fun as author was able to.

He seems to be a guy who is self-assured, and determined to live his life to the fullest. I keep reflecting back on so many of the points he made and things that he learned and trying to apply them to my own life.

I am convinced that his literary talent is likely to keep his work in print for a very long time. This book is destined to be a best seller, to rise to the top of the list!

His vivid description of Seattle, specially in summers made me plan spending my next vacation in Seattle!

  3. Man, this is a great story! Funny, cute, descriptive and illustrated, with pictures adding a thousand words. I got glued to the story once I started reading it, enjoying every detail and only got up once I finished this short book.

Cherubs don't come out of the heavens, but author's happiness at finding peace and acceptance in Seattle comes out pretty clear. So I will say that he was very effective as any other at describing his story of transitioning to yet another land, while also transitioning across midlife.

    Highly recommended.

  5. This is a memoir of a successful foreign born technology executive who moved to Seattle to work for Amazon.com after spending more than a decade in Silicon Valley. Apprehensive and unsure of what he'd find, he is nevertheless a risk taker, admirable and somewhat naive.

What I found most endearing about "Seattle Adventures" was Kalpanik's sense of humor--it's simple and yet complex, silly and yet sophisticated all at the same time! From page 1, I was drawn into his writing style. He is clear, mysterious, funny and the occasionally poetic and creates a diverse writing style.

I recommend this book, it's wonderful.

  1. Good Book! Suggestions for entertaining kids of all ages and temperaments. Happy that the food options for kids at each place were listed, as well as prices, entry times, and age recommendations.
The most important info was highlighted at page tops (great!).

EXPERIENCE MUSIC PROJECT was a hit for both our 8 yr old granddaughter and 11 year old, hyperactive grandson!

This would be a great resource for parents & grandparents who were visiting Seattle for the first time with children.

  1. When this book was published in 1990, it virtually created a new genre: the local tree guide. By combining clear, simple descriptions of hundreds of local area species (about 30 native, and the rest ornamental) and providing information on where you could go see the tree, it became possible for people to both learn a wide variety of trees and to learn more about the natural heritage of a place - in this case, Seattle. A second edition of this book has just (February 2006) been published; it contains almost twice as many species, many more color photographs, and a far longer list of specimen trees.

  2. This book is great. We use it at least a couple of times a week for ecological restoration.

  1. After growing up in the Puget Sound Area in the pre_1960`s before the changes took place,I saw the Seattle waterfront as one of the coolest spots on the earth, comparable to the waterfront in Hong Kong.Just a seamy world of offbeat characters& some of the best seafood you could possibly imagine.Paula has disovered all those haunts& more. This is the quintessential guide to the best of the best& I recommened it to locals & non_locals to get the most for your $$& to rediscover the way Seattle as it really was.

  2. This book is especially great for new residents of the Seattle area. The descriptions on the hot-spots are dead on. Once in town, be sure to pick up a free copy of "The Stranger" weekly newspaper.

Advice: Be careful with some of the listings in the book as they are not around any longer. You may want to consult with citysearch (or call) before making plans.

  3. With an impending trip to Seattle on the horizon, I ordered this book and some others -- but this one is by far my favorite! Not only is it thorough, scathingly honest in its critiques, and well-organized, but it is an absolute riot to read!!! Seriously, once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down... It is always good to find a travel guide that offers up actual opinions of landmarks, restaurants, hotels, etc., rather than just what seems like a tagline from a brochure -- and this book does not hold back, whether it be to compliment or to criticize...

I HIGHLY recommend this book if you are traveling to Seattle, moving there, etc... You will be entertained from cover to cover!!!

  4. This book was purchased on all the recommendations that I read. I was dissapointed when it arrived. Its a good enough book, but not for a weekeend traveller.

I thought it was going to be the kind of lonely planet style guide but more.. its not. Its much more of the kind of book you get when your going to spend a week or more, or move there, or have along with a Lonely Planet guide.

As it happens I had to go get a Lonely Planet guide anyway, so double waste of time.

  5. This is a totally unique look at a city, not from the frame of a large international tourguide company, but from point of view of THE BEST local weekly newspaper for Seattle (a shining star amoung weeklies for the whole nation, in fact). The Stranger paper has the job of pointing you in the direction of happening haunts, good eats, nightlife, shopping, etc, and they've been doing it for years, so who better to write the ultimate guide on the city of Seattle?

This is a great book if you are a brief visitor, if you are relocating, or if you have lived in Seattle and want a terrific reference guide for new things to do out and about.

I like the way the restaurants are broken up: ethnic, quick-fix, splurge, cafes, etc. Bars are done similarly: rock clubs, all ages, taverns, swanks bars, cool places to be seen, dives, dj & hiphop, etc. This makes it easy to find your scene and head on out.

The only drawback is that this was published in 2001 and no updated version is out yet. There might be some things that have changed in the interim, but this is still a good baseline for your visit to Seattle. Pick up this week's copy of The Stranger when you get there!

  1. If you're new to mountain biking or new to the area this book is a "must have." The book is filled with rides within 90 minutes drive of Seattle. Directions to trailheads are excellent, routes provide a good overview of each area, and route maps provide adequate diection. This is THE guide for Seattle-area mountain biking.

  2. As a visitor to Seattle, I used this book to find some good local mtn. bike trails. The author of the book has detailed every aspect of these trails to the mile. If you use the information and follow your bike computer, you will find your way around some awesome trails. I would suggest photocopying the pages and carrying them with you as the book is too bulky unless you have a big backpack. Luckily, when we rode the Middlefork trail at Snoqualmie we were smart enough to tear the pages out of the book. We misjudged our timing especially due to some of the obstacles we faced on the trail i.e. water crossings, fallen trees, etc. With one light (one burned out in 2 hours) and three people, we followed the book to the "t" and hiked approx. 6 miles of this trail in the dark. Without those torn out pages, we'd have spent the night in Snoqualmie! Great book. Buy it if you want to ride the trails in Seattle!

  3. Good driving directions, good riding directions, good guide to what is actually at the trail. All around a great addition for anyone just getting going in Mt. Biking.

  4. I have had this book for about 3 weeks now. I have gone on 3 rides in the book. So far instructions have been clear. Lots of choices for trails, I'm looking forward to doing some new ones from the book.

  5. I just returned from a trip to Seattle and hoped this book would be useful in finding some nice mountain bike trails. I feel that the book was too full of 1 to 5 mile "rides". I get the impression Mr. Zilly felt like he had to pad the book by filling it with these extremely short rides. I also bought the Puget Sound mountain bike guide by Santo Crisuolo and was happy to see it filled with more rides in the 15-30+ mile range. Santo's book also had better maps.
