5 comments about Relocating to Seattle and Surrounding Areas: Everything You Need to Know Before You Move and After You Get There! (Relocating).
- This is one of the very finest "relocation" books that I have had the pleasure of perusing. My career consisted of forty years in the Navy (1948-1988) and twenty different living locations. If ONLY Guy Steele had been around during that period of time to provide advanced information about even just ONE of my living locations, it would have been a blessing.
Altho I have visited Seattle from time to time, Guy almost challenges me to try it out for a permanent residence. After reading his book, can I leave Honolulu and head for Seattle? No! But almost!
- I tend to be a big list maker and have drawers and files crammed full of newspaper clippings and magazine articles. Considering a move to the Seattle area from the mid-Atlantic, I picked up Mr. Steele's "Relocating to Seattle" and found that I had hit the jackpot! Sort of like One Stop Shopping - I found all the information I could possibly need for anticipating and making the move westward. He even had advice and suggestions on topics I hadn't even thought about! Also, expecting - as with many travel books - rather dry text, I was thrilled to find that Mr. Steele's book was a truly enjoyable read! Lots of personal annecdotes and well-placed humor made it a book I will hang onto for years to come.

- Having decided recently to look into making the big move cross-country, I checked out this book and found it to be a much better than average moving guide. After reading it, I felt like I lived there - maybe not quite a native, but not a newbie either! The author is clearly very familiar with his city, and his stories contain just the right blend of humor and insight. All in all, I thought it was a very enjoyable read...and I just might move to Seattle!
- The author of this book relocated to Seattle himself, so he has the right type of info needed for those planning a move with no previous info on the city. He gives significant info on the neighborhoods and surrounding areas full with crime rates & community junctions. The problem with this handbook is that it is old (2000). I am certain things have changed in the last seven years. This would be an excellent guide if the author updated the info, other than that I think the info provided covers more than most.

5 comments about Newcomer's Handbook for Moving to and Living in Seattle Including Bellevue, Redmond, Everett, and Tacoma.
- this is good comprehensive resource for those moving to seattle. its full of useful information. i used it to read about different neighborhoods, figure out where to buy furniture, how to set up my phone, and get general information about the city from across the country. its great
- This book was too much info just thrown together. There seems to be no diagram for organization. The info that is documented is not what I had hoped for. It reads more like a novel than a handbook. The maps provided are too small & undetailed. The overview is all right. The author does give useful numbers & websites. But there was too much about moving to & not living in Seattle. I was hoping for some real insight into Seattle. Moving is going to be intense. The book does not offer enough info on the ins & outs of the TRUE Seattle.
- I am enjoying this book immensely in preparation for a "scope it out" trip my husband and I are taking with our toddler in a few months. Yes the info could be found elsewhere with endless hours of research, but in this book is is right at my fingertips and is well written and organized.
- I purchased this book for my son when he moved to the Seattle region. I was concerned some of the information would be outdated because it was published 3 - 4years ago. My concern was not warranted! The book offers extensive information on everything one would need when moving to a new place. From things like where the post office is in each regional area, to the process for voter registration, to home costs, school information, motor vehicle requirements, and on and on.
Wonderful book for a newcomer to the Seattle area and the state of Washington!
- I purchased this book when I was moving to Seattle (naturally) and it was certainly worth the money I spent on it. It was a handy reference guide to the things I would need to do once I moved, as well as a directory of information about places, shops, malls and other kinds of services that are are necessary and useful.
However, since most of the same information is available on the Internet, I would have appreciated a critical assessment of various aspects of Seattle life described in the book. For instance, I would have preferred something like "ABC and XYZ malls provide the best quality of service" as opposed to a listing of addresses and telephone numbers of twenty different malls.
Still, there is a lot of useful information and advice in this book, and I would definitely recommend it.

4 comments about The Food Lover's Guide to Seattle (Food Lovers' Guide to Seattle).
- Wow!!! a complete review like the big cities. Very comprehensive by a first rate writer. I had the pleasure to meet Katy at a party ne week and is she knowledgeable. about Seatle. You would think she had lived here all her life.
A food lover's bible!!
- The book is delightful to read. I am not from the Seattle but it makes me want to visit, just to hang out in places like James Cook Ltd for cheese or Gelatiamo for ice cream or Il Fornaio for bread. It provides great inside information on the `in' places to go to. Miss Calcott is a food connoisseur. I can relate when she says she dreams about food. My imagination often takes me to enchanting places like Florence and Paris and thoughts of fabulous food are never far behind. The anecdotes that precede each section are interesting. Well done!
- Yes, I know of no other book guide to Seattle's ethnic food culture. Considering how important a food town this is, it's really a shame this book wasn't written sooner. But, it's here & it's very good. I agree w. almost all of Ms. Calcott's food recommendations.
My quarrels are w. what is left out. What happened to ethnic restaurants?? I know there are many of them & it would've added to the size of the book & the time it took to research it. But a food guide that leaves out restaurants has left out something very important. Richard
- I am a dislocated Appalachian that took the food bull of Seattle by the horns, but that was before this book. Now I am sure I will be THE Seattle epicure-genius among my circle with this book tucked into my collection. I am amazed by the variety of food resources, from chocolatiers to ethnic markets, where to get the greatest baguettes. I also love the anecdotal sections on the pioneers/owners of some of these purveyors. Oh, and recipes! There is humor, knowledge, pleasure, and respect written here, and a love for Seattle and the food treasures it offers. Buy it.

5 comments about West Seattle 101: A Hundred and One Things to Do, an Insider's Guide to Recreation, Dining, Education & Enrichment.
- Great guide, very helpful. Might I suggest a shopping section next time?
- After checking out this book I got really excited about "strip tease aerobics" and all the creative ideas to beat the rainy day blues in West Seattle. It's perfect for the West Seattleite or visitor.
- A book of mostly advertisements. Some out of date. No objectivity. Not one negative review or critical statement in the book. All is glorius. A few gems in a bag of rocks.
- This is the third time A Kid's Review has "reviewed" West Seattle 101, each time trashing the author or concept of the book and each time indicating he (or she) is under 13, which allows him to avoid revealing his name. Reviewers should be honest and open, but this person is neither. In response to the latest posting: West Seattle 101 is not a book of 101 critical reviews. It's a book of 101 things to do in West Seattle, each of which Ms. Hinton, the author, found intriguing in some way. If she didn't find the thing to do intriguing, she left it out of the book. It's like a trail guide in that way, where authors leave out the trails they don't find interesting. West Seattle 101 is for exploring the neighborhood. I've had many people ask, "are there really 101 things to do in West Seattle?" YES! And if you want this Westside native's personal list of favorite things to do (with commentary, phone numbers and websites), then this is your book. If you want critiques or lists of things to do, stick with the newspaper or the yellow pages. I hope you enjoy this Adventure Press title.
- Congratulations to Lori Hinton for her informative and well documentated book. Can't wait for your next one. As a person born and raised in West Seattle, I think this book is right on!

5 comments about The Stranger Guide to Seattle: The City's Smartest, Pickiest, Most Obsessive Urban Manual.
- After growing up in the Puget Sound Area in the pre_1960`s before the changes took place,I saw the Seattle waterfront as one of the coolest spots on the earth, comparable to the waterfront in Hong Kong.Just a seamy world of offbeat characters& some of the best seafood you could possibly imagine.Paula has disovered all those haunts& more. This is the quintessential guide to the best of the best& I recommened it to locals & non_locals to get the most for your $$& to rediscover the way Seattle as it really was.
- This book is especially great for new residents of the Seattle area. The descriptions on the hot-spots are dead on. Once in town, be sure to pick up a free copy of "The Stranger" weekly newspaper.
Advice: Be careful with some of the listings in the book as they are not around any longer. You may want to consult with citysearch (or call) before making plans.
- With an impending trip to Seattle on the horizon, I ordered this book and some others -- but this one is by far my favorite! Not only is it thorough, scathingly honest in its critiques, and well-organized, but it is an absolute riot to read!!! Seriously, once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down... It is always good to find a travel guide that offers up actual opinions of landmarks, restaurants, hotels, etc., rather than just what seems like a tagline from a brochure -- and this book does not hold back, whether it be to compliment or to criticize...
I HIGHLY recommend this book if you are traveling to Seattle, moving there, etc... You will be entertained from cover to cover!!!
- This book was purchased on all the recommendations that I read. I was dissapointed when it arrived. Its a good enough book, but not for a weekeend traveller.
I thought it was going to be the kind of lonely planet style guide but more.. its not. Its much more of the kind of book you get when your going to spend a week or more, or move there, or have along with a Lonely Planet guide. As it happens I had to go get a Lonely Planet guide anyway, so double waste of time.
- This is a totally unique look at a city, not from the frame of a large international tourguide company, but from point of view of THE BEST local weekly newspaper for Seattle (a shining star amoung weeklies for the whole nation, in fact). The Stranger paper has the job of pointing you in the direction of happening haunts, good eats, nightlife, shopping, etc, and they've been doing it for years, so who better to write the ultimate guide on the city of Seattle?
This is a great book if you are a brief visitor, if you are relocating, or if you have lived in Seattle and want a terrific reference guide for new things to do out and about.
I like the way the restaurants are broken up: ethnic, quick-fix, splurge, cafes, etc. Bars are done similarly: rock clubs, all ages, taverns, swanks bars, cool places to be seen, dives, dj & hiphop, etc. This makes it easy to find your scene and head on out.
The only drawback is that this was published in 2001 and no updated version is out yet. There might be some things that have changed in the interim, but this is still a good baseline for your visit to Seattle. Pick up this week's copy of The Stranger when you get there!
