  1. The Rob Roy Way is a guide detailing a long distance walking trail along the Rob Roy Way. This trail leads from Drymen, Scotland (about 29 kilometers or 18 miles north of Glasglow) to Pitlochry. This route is a total of 106 kilometers or 66.5 miles taking from five to eight days to traverse on foot.

The exciting adventures of Rob Roy are detailed in the novels of Sir Walter Scott. Rob Roy MacGregor was born in 1671. He was a property owner, the co-inventor of the Lennox Watch (a system of cattle protection in exchange for monetary compensation), and clan chief by the time he was 30 years old. Then, in 1712, when an employee stole a large sum of money and his patron Duke of Montrose turned against him, Rob Roy was left bankrupt and outlawed. In retaliation, Rob Roy took vengeance upon his former patron by stealing his cattle and kidnapping his servants. Rob Roy was caught several times, made several daring escapes, and eventually received the King's pardon in 1725. Rob Roy died peacefully in 1734.

The Rob Roy Way is located along the trails and areas frequented by Rob Roy during his daring adventures. The trail also includes stops at Rob Roy's grave and at the Rob Roy Visitor Center. Moreover, various archeological and historical sites from early prehistory through historical sites can also be enjoyed while undertaking this trail. However, the high point of this tour is the breathtaking highland scenery as well as the beautiful flora and abundant fauna.

The Rob Roy Way outlines not only the background story of Rob Roy and the various stops along this walking trail (including waterproof full color maps) but also details various long walking and hiking fundamentals. These details include what types of equipment the participant should bring to complete the walk, how long the various legs of the journey will take, and how weather and seasonally may potentially affect the trail. There are also helpful tips especially for novices about daily mileage, feet, weight, and the right gear.

  1. Get this - you'll need it.........

  2. Set to the same scale as a lot of the very good Michelin maps, this map covers all of Scotland with enough detail to make traveling the country easy. It can give you a sense of how far Loch Ness really is from Edinburgh, points out the scenic roads, main roads, back roads; has good detail on the islands; and covers from the border with England up to the top of the country. Any specific city like Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, etc, will require a more detailed map, obtained locally, but this map is very good for planning and getting around. Main thing to remember, you can end up going much slower in the Highlands than you think, in some areas 25 mph average speed because of the roads twisting or being single track. On the other hand, I was going 70 for a while, keeping up with traffic, in a glen above Loch Lommond. The roads are in good condition, and driving on the left is not the hardest thing about driving in Britian; it is getting used to how narrow the lanes are.
The roads are safe, the countryside more beautiful than you think, even if you rent a car only for one day to head out it is worth it, and this map is excellent.

I have leanred, never ask driving directions from someone waiting for a bus.

  3. When we first looked at this map, we didn't think it would be accurate. Once we arrived in Scotland, we realized that it was extremely accurate, there are just not that many roads there as we are used to in the US. I would recommend this to anyone traveling in Scotland.

  4. This map is an excellent choice for trip and route planning, particularly in Wales. Information on Welsh roads can be very difficult especially up in the Snowdonia region. This map is an excellent scale (1:400,000) with plenty of detail for planning, but not so much as to be distracting. I used it extensively for planning a Welsh holiday, and recommend it highly.

  1. This witty, interesting and comprehensive guide is simply packed with information and recommendations concerning what to do and see in Scotland as well as where to stay and eat along the way. Much of the information is provided in lists of

  2. We just returned from Scotland having based most of our travel decisions on this book. The author was dead on in every instance. We found some of the most wonderful and out -of -the-way places with his help. I highly recommend purchasing any travel book by this author and will do so again.

  3. This book is designed not by region, but by an endless lists of "bests". I found this inconvenient when travelling because anytime I arrived in a new city I had to cross reference multiple pages from the index. Additionally the descriptions are too brief and often do not give adequate directions/location of the described restaurant, etc. The only time my husband and I were lost on our whole trip was trying to follow the vague directions in this book for a restaurant that was listed without a phone number or address. I would not purchase this book again.
