3 comments about Frommer's Complete Hostel Vacation Guide to England, Wales & Scotland (Complete Hostel Vacation Guide to England, Wales and Scotland).
- Cordero's guide provides a to-the-point analysis of the premiere budget retreats of the region, and she does so with wit and spunk. Her guide is noteworthy in that it also guides readers to the major sights of each area, including some more funky, less-touristed ones. Cordero's in-depth hostel reviews do not hesitate to comment on virtually any aspect of the hostel: whether it is a long trek from the train station, whether the roosters awaken guests at the crack of dawn, whether the hostel cooks make a mean breakfast...it is a pleasure to read a guide written by a fellow budget traveler who obviously relished her experiences traversing the British Isles, and who delights in sharing them along with her great money-saving tips. A-one guide
- I'm not a great reader but this book saved my life. I was in GB with girlfriend and girlfriend dumped me. In London. She left this book behind. I took Kristina Cordero's advice as godspell and traveled alone all over the island. All the places where just as described in the book. When I wanted to be alone, I went where she said so and viceversa. A really great book for anyone who wants to travel. But it's also a great read. I never went to Scotland but I read about it anyway! And laughed!

- I backpacked the UK in September of 1999 by myself. This book helped make the trip one of the best times I've had in my life. It was frequently the envy of fellow hostel-goers, and was often seen on hand in the hostel libraries. The directions to individual hostels can't be beat and the 'things to do' areas are great as well. I realize that this book is out of print now (why?), but if you plan on backpacking the UK, FIND A COPY! If you absolutely cannot, email me at bryan@n-o-s-p-a-m.dugger.com (remove the n-o-s-p-a-m.)

1 comments about The Island Whisky Trail: An Illustrated Guide to the Hebrridean Distilleries.
- This is a splendid book about the single malt distilleries of the Hebrides, and although it features a yacht owners' exclusive tour, it is well worth the read just to find out about the distilleries that will show you around and give you a whisky tasting. Nice photography and well-written narrative. The 4 star rating (as opposed to 5) is because very few of us will be able to afford it!

1 comments about The Rob Roy Way.
- The Rob Roy Way is a guide detailing a long distance walking trail along the Rob Roy Way. This trail leads from Drymen, Scotland (about 29 kilometers or 18 miles north of Glasglow) to Pitlochry. This route is a total of 106 kilometers or 66.5 miles taking from five to eight days to traverse on foot.
The exciting adventures of Rob Roy are detailed in the novels of Sir Walter Scott. Rob Roy MacGregor was born in 1671. He was a property owner, the co-inventor of the Lennox Watch (a system of cattle protection in exchange for monetary compensation), and clan chief by the time he was 30 years old. Then, in 1712, when an employee stole a large sum of money and his patron Duke of Montrose turned against him, Rob Roy was left bankrupt and outlawed. In retaliation, Rob Roy took vengeance upon his former patron by stealing his cattle and kidnapping his servants. Rob Roy was caught several times, made several daring escapes, and eventually received the King's pardon in 1725. Rob Roy died peacefully in 1734.
The Rob Roy Way is located along the trails and areas frequented by Rob Roy during his daring adventures. The trail also includes stops at Rob Roy's grave and at the Rob Roy Visitor Center. Moreover, various archeological and historical sites from early prehistory through historical sites can also be enjoyed while undertaking this trail. However, the high point of this tour is the breathtaking highland scenery as well as the beautiful flora and abundant fauna.
The Rob Roy Way outlines not only the background story of Rob Roy and the various stops along this walking trail (including waterproof full color maps) but also details various long walking and hiking fundamentals. These details include what types of equipment the participant should bring to complete the walk, how long the various legs of the journey will take, and how weather and seasonally may potentially affect the trail. There are also helpful tips especially for novices about daily mileage, feet, weight, and the right gear.

1 comments about Witching for William.
- Evelyn Birkby is a master storyteller and homemaker whose chatty newspaper columns and radio commentaries have entertained, comforted and educated Midwesterners for nearly 60 years. She's done it so well that The New Yorker magazine in 1991 did a 15-page feature on her, and she wound up on all the TV network news shows. This new book Witching for William may be Evelyn's best story ever, and certainly the deepest reporting job she's ever done. It is a search for, and profile of, her long-lost great-great-grandfather William Corrie. She turns it into a riveting adventure. What makes it so for general readers like us is not that Evelyn's family is so much more interesting than yours or mine, but that she tells the story so much better than most of us could. It's helpful that she includes genealogy tips at the end of each chapter. And it's perfect that she includes a fitting recipe after each chapter, too. Her first boss in the newspaper business told her in 1949 always to put a recipe at the end of every column she wrote "because they may not read anything else but they'll always read a recipe." That advice has served her - and her readers - very well, and the recipes in Witching for William make it possible for you not only to read this story but also to taste it.
~ from Iowa writer Chuck Offenburger
