- I hoped for a guide filled with photos of rose filled gardens, lovely scenic views and gorgeous old homes opening their doors as B&Bs. I got a book with dull black and white line sketches of a few B&Bs and the author's extremely brief guide to attractions in the area. Compared to EVERY OTHER B&B guide INCLUDING the FREE guides available on-line, this book is uninspiring at best and a never-to-be-opened-again dust collector at worst.

2 comments about The Scottish Islands.
- What an extraordinary work! Mr Haswell Smith has certainly putin the legwork when researching this book. The detail that he has goneinto is quite unusual with works of this type, that usually seem tofarm out different parts to different people. As a reference book for people who wish to visit any of Scotlands smaller Islands it is invaluable,(as a sea kayaker I use it often to help plan my trips)and as a fireside read when the sea is too wild to paddle, it helps to fire the imagination. As a piece of work you just have to admire the author's attention to detail. I only wish that he had written this a few years earlier and saved me a lot of effort in researching my own trips.
- I have been sailing the Islands off the Scottish West coast for nearly 20 years now. If ONLY I had this book when I started! It is just wonderful. The attention to detail for those using the sea enables good choices of destination to be made on every day you are out there whatever kind of boat you use. The detail on history, mapping, wild life, plant life, harbours, anchorages all add up to a great resource every day on the boat. The authors own drawings and paintings are so true to the place. And then, what a great joy I have in reading it by the fireside on winter nights when I plan the next great adventure amongst these Islands. It is a book, that once read, you will never put it down again if there is still an ounce of sea-faring in you. It just makes you dream again and be there! A must-buy if ever there was one even if you never go there in your life, its that good. Dont miss it.
AND we have had many many hours on the boat late at night with maybe too much grog inside strongly debating the absolute definition of an 'Island' which starts the book. And yet we cannot get any crew to all agree on a single view..

2 comments about Sword of King James, The.
- He is a man from another time and another place but fairy magic brought Dylan Matheson to Ciorran in the Scottish Highlands decades before the final Jacobite defeat at Culloden. He fell in love with the laird's daughter and after much hardship and many adventures, he married her. Their union produced two children before his precious Cait was murdered by her abusive first spouse.
Dylan has come to realize his home is with Clan Ciorran and he doesn't even want the fairy Sinann to try to return him to his own time. This is just as well because the bumbling fairy believes Dylan is the only one who can prepare the clan for the hard times ahead. Before Dylan can deal with his enemies (both English and Scottish) he must first defeat Morrighan, the Celtic goddess of war who wants to know the future and will use any means at her disposal to force Dylan into giving up that information. Cross Sharon Kay Penman with Mercedes Lackey and Judith Tarr and readers will understand that the novel SWORD OF KING JAMES is historical romantic fantasy at it's very best. Hearts will go out to the beleaguered hero who still mourns his true love while trying to move the clan in the direction he wants it to go. J. Adrian Lee has created something wondrous with this haunting novel. Harriet Klausner
- I picked this up because on the cover it is compared to Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series. Indeed, there are many similarities: time travel from the 20th century to 18th century Scotland, the Jacobite Rebellion, romance, etc. One more similarity: I think it would be more enjoyable had I read the first two books in the series first. Unfortunately it did not say on the cover that it was 3rd of 3. I thought it was the first.
That said, it was still a good read, and I have ordered the first two to make up for my not reading them first. Dylan is a hero we can relate to, with passion for his wife (sadly deceased in the book) and his two children. He has also traveled through time and chosen to stay in the 18th century (see another Gabaldon resemblance?). He attempts to make a difference in the outcome of the Rising, as he has knowledge of how things will end. Bottom line, I wish I had read the first two first!! I hope that reading them will make this book seem even better!

- I've often found the large "coffee table" books at mass retailers bargain tables to be out of date or low quality. Thankfully, that isn't the case with Spectacular Scotland.
You will have to display Spectacular Scotland somewhere in your home, as it is too large to shelf, but it is sure to entice and awe visitors that thumb through it. Beautiful!
