- The (British) Automobile Association puts out a concise but highly useful guide detailing a variety of walks and hikes for the area of Scotland around Edinburgh, Perth, the Angus Glens, and the southern edge of the Cairngorms.
Each walk has a short narrative explaining points of possible historical or natural interest, a sketch map of the route, directions to a start point, and suggestions for refreshment, along with time and distance factors. The corresponding Ordnance Survey map, locations of public toilets, and suitability for dogs are helpfully noted.
Eastern Scotland features a variety of terrain, from urban centers and small towns to cultivated fields and forests to the very rugged Cairngorm Mountains themselves. This guide has walks to meet most levels of interest and ability. Many of the walks feature historical landmarks, whose significance is noted in the respective narratives.
This guide is highly recommended to those happy visitors to Scotland looking to see more of that beautiful land than might be visible from tour buses and car parks.
