  1. As an author, traveling to Scotland each summer isn't just to renew my muse, it's a great way to come up for air and rejuvinate mi' soul. And every summer, prior to arriving, I reach for this travel guide. Yeah, mine's dated from 2004, but of the stack I own, THIS one has the MOST info, broken down in such a fashion that it's like having your own tour guide/planner. And, I swear, every time I go through this book to coincide with whatever city I'm visiting, there's always something that I didn't see/notice before. This book is packed! It gives prices, websites, walking/driving tours/planning, kids days out, where to eat/sleep/shop, traditional sight seeing as well as off the beaten path for those of us wanting to throw on a backpack and simply follow the sunset. Well worth the money. Oh, and the cover is of quality that can withstand being tossed into a backpack, suitcase and the pages withstand being thumbed through, corners folded...again--worth the money!

  1. This is a book that takes its readers to foreign places and tells them what it is like to live abroad. Nancy describes these places with such detail that the reader can visualize what she is seeing perfectly. She has a sense of humor that gets her through even the most scary situations, alone in a foreign city without knowledge of the language. She invites her readers to meet people even have lunch with a lord of Parliament and see things they have never before seen or done. She is enchanting, clear, and focused for her readers. For a fun read with a facinating lady this is the book to read. Curl up with a cup of tea and spend an afternoon reading about adventures you'd like to take.

  2. A most readable, entertaining and descriptive account of the author's and her husband's five-year assignment to England from Michigan. Recounts their experiences in England and in their trips to Europe in quite riveting detail. Describes how different day-to-day life was in England. One of those rare books that was difficult to put down -- I just had to continue reading this book into the "wee hours".

  3. This account of an American living in England is entertaining and makes some interesting observations about the differences between the two countries. However, the narrative is flawed in several ways; it can be stilted and repetative at times, relying too heavily on stock phrases and cliches. My copy is rife with misspellings (both of proper nouns like "Frankfort" [sic] and British vocabulary). Finally, it is also ridden with factual inaccuracies that frustrate the informed reader (Hurley repeatedly states that Prince Charles and Princess Diana were married in Westminster Abbey when in actuality their wedding was held in St. Paul's; at one point she states that in 1917 George V "loved [Windsor] castle so much he named it after his Windsor family" when of course the castle and town had been called Windsor for centuries and it was the royal family who took their new, more 'English' name from the existing castle).
Ultimately, Closer Encounters is an amusing read, if one can overlook the lack of fact-checking and editing prior to publication.
