1 comments about Discovering the Moscow Countryside: An Illustrated Guide to Russia's Heartland.
- As the founder of Discovering Russia, a company devoted to enriching cultural and business travel to Russia, we are always looking for good travel books to recommend for our clients. "Discovering the Moscow Countryside : An Illustrated Guide to Russia's Heartland" by Kathleen Berton Murrell is such a volume for those who wish to discover the fascinating yet little-explored region surrounding Moscow, a land of princely families and wealthy merchants and dedicated believers.
Murrell, the author of the wonderful "Moscow Art Nouveau," presents two weeks' worth of touring.
There are some items missing from this book, such as an index, and unfortunately none of the place names in the book are in Cyrillic. In a way, that omission is not too much of an issue for the tourist, as it would be almost impossible for a visitor to Russia to travel to this region without the aid of a guide, or at least a knowledgeable driver (which is what we recommend to our clients visiting the area).
"Discovering the Moscow Countryside : An Illustrated Guide to Russia's Heartland" is a wonderful guide for discovering Russia beyond Moscow.

4 comments about A Traveller's History of Russia (Traveller's History).
- If you want to know more about how the country of Russia evolved through the years and how the country went from a tsarist system to socialisim/communism I can highly recommend this book. It is written in a straightforward manner which enlightens the reader and at the same time entices one to want to be more knowledgeable about historical incidents not only about Russia but other countries and cultures.
Regards, D'Vante
- This book has on the cover: Fourth edition, fully revised and updated. On the title page verso: First American edition published 2001 by Interlink Books. On p. vii "The USSR is the largest country on the globe ..." (repeated on p. 2) P. 1 has: "... what we now know as the USSR."
An earlier edition will probably suit you as well as this one.
- The book covers so much ground that it can't go into any depth, but that doesn't stop the authors from giving a complete view of the highlights of Russia history. It starts before the Mongol horde invaded, and continues through Yeltsen, and ends with Putin's taking office. (And with a 2001 publication date, that's about all you could expect!)
For those interested in more information, the books lists it's sources (broken down by chapter), as well as a recommended reading list. It also includes a list of rulers, and a timeline that starts at 830 BCE!
- In hand are the fourth and fifth editions of A traveller's history of Russia. Or is it Russia and the USSR? Both forms appear in both editions. The fifth (2006) appears to be a verbatim reproduction of the fourth, with the addition of a paragraph on terrorism on p. 293. Even the preface is unchanged.
The 4th ed. (2001) has such remarks as "what we now know as the USSR" (p. 1) and "The USSR is the largest country on the globe (p. 2)." Chapter 17 is captioned "The end of the Soviet Union." Such poor writing qualifies as misinformation. I view this publication askance. Especially since the covers of both these editions have "fully revised and updated."

1 comments about Journey to Tuva.
- This highly informative book is a great addition to any Tuvaphile's library. It is a great depiction of the land, people, and culture of Tuva during a pivotal point in the timy nation's history. Mänchen-Helfen's account of his personal experiences is very open-minded and accepting for coming from a European of his time. The text covers many topics ranging from government and living conditions to herding and tobacco. This book flows too, and is recommended for anyone interested in other cultures. In general: a great book.
