1 comments about Frommer's Rome Past & Present.
- When I was in Rome I kept looking for something like this book.
Most of the ones I found in english were really disappointing. The good ones were all too big, way too expensive, and often in Italian. Finaly a good one at a reasonable price, and available here!

2 comments about Eyewitness Travel City Map to Rome.
- The map is better than paper and good. But, it lacks updated metro stops and is not as thorough as the "Let's Go.." map. We bought both maps and the "Let's Go.. was preferred by our group. The "Eyewitness .." map is fine if you have no other travelguides . But it wastes the entire back of the map with "helpful" but limited suggestions or sights. So, for a cheap map + travel guide, its OK. For a better map, go for the "Let's Go.."
- One of the three best maps of Rome. Recently (through fall 2001), I bought just about every map of Rome I could find. The best three maps are Rome [called by Amazon.com Rome: FlexiMap (Insight Map Series)], Rome City Map [called Eyewitness Travel City Map to Rome], and Rome, Destination Map [called National Geographic Rome]. Based on content, usability, accuracy, and durability, Insight's FlexiMap is best, with the other two close behind and tied for second and third best. The maps are about the same price.

5 comments about Rome (Pallas Guides).
- Brilliant! I've been to Rome five times with this book... although it was concise enough to give me an excellent overview even by the first time.
- Did you ever run across a guidebook that, at the same time, 1) gives you a brilliantly clever and comprehensive choice of information about the sites and 2) allows you to get to each site in the easiest, quickest way?
I didn't, until I found "Rome" by Mauro Lucentini. That double record is especially remarkable in a city like Rome, where the various sights may have lifespans of up to 2,800 years requiring equally monumental explanations, and/or be concealed into corners of a labyrinthine ancient habitat, where you can easily lose your way. With 700-plus pages, Lucentini's book may be a bit heavy to carry, but it is an incredible pleasure to read, and you will be thankful for each page, so fascinating is every bit of the information provided - no other Roman guide comes even close to the amount of historic or artistic background supplied - and for the fact that it will lead you in front of every item by the hand.
Also, the book is structured in such a way that, if you care doing it, you are able to read a good half of it and digest quite a lot of information even before you leave for your destination, This is a quality no other guidebook I know possesses, at least not to such an extent.
- Terrific Book. Detailed descriptions of this glorious city. Every traveler to Rome should use it as reference.
- This book is a wonderful foray into the many aspects and history of Rome, and can be enjoyed sitting in New York, as well as walking in Rome. I've taken many of the walks, and the book is a chatty, fun, and erudite companion, pointing out all of the (almost) hidden traces of centuries past. A must for travelers in Italy (or just in your armchair)!
- I have a shelf full of guides to Rome but when I bought this last year I threw away the rest of the shelf. It is simply fantastic. I have been a book reviewer for thirty years and never thought I would 'go overboard' about a book but this is everything I wanted. Personal, informed, entertaining, reliable, surprising, instructive, accessible, logical, practical.......I run out of words. It's great to read before during and after you visit Rome - only drawback is it's too bulky to carry around with you but take notes! Use it as your bible. Rome (Pallas Guides)

1 comments about Rome and the Vatican Travel Pack (Globetrotter Travel Packs).
- This is a great buy. This travel guide is complete, well illustrated with color photos and maps, an okay index, and it comes with a separate Rome and the Vatican travel map. About every two pages there is a small color map of the area relevant to those pages. Map and travel guide are compact and in a clever transparent jacket.

4 comments about Sandra Gustafson's Great Sleeps Italy: Florence - Rome - Venice; Fifth Edition (Cheap Eats and Sleeps).
- Although Ms. Gustafson's series of books is now "Great" instead of "Cheap", they still contain valuable, personal reviews of relatively inexpensive hotels. The idea is not the cheapest spots (see the Let's Go series for those), but less costly hotels which give above-average value for the money. I've stayed at her recommended hotels in both Florence and Rome and found them exactly as described. You won't be disappointed unless you expect 4-star amenities in a 2-star hotel.
- I picked this book up along with Rick Steves'. I've found Great Sleeps Italy to have many more choices, several being much less known and therefore a better bargain, and easier to get into. That being said, the book is from 2002, and a little dated. I've noticed several big price increases from what she shows and even a few hotels that appear to no longer be in existence. For $11 on this site though, it is worth it.
- Bought this book to help me plan a New Years Trip to italy, and though it was helpful and interesting, I think I had better luck browsing around on the internet on sights like Venere and rick steves bulletin boards. The one thing i really did like is that she gives honest opinions about the hotels, and most of them were spot on. I would recommend this book as a baseline for finding hotels, but also look for reviews online.
It was also really nice that she has a range of price options, though most of them were a little over our budget. Good if you want to spend $150 and up a night, then it would be a really great book. Otherwise, stick to the Let's Go books.
- This book was useful to me in some previous trips to Italy. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that I wish the info was kept more current.

- I thought that this book had so much information, it was unbelevable. In school, I am doing a project on Ancient Roman Education, and I got most of my info from this book. It's wonderful!
