  5. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are teenagers now and off to Paris, the City of Light, to flim the new movie Passport to Paris. The girls have a great time shopping, eating snails!, and riding on montorbikes with two handsome french boys. They each talk about how pretty Paris is and they have a great time there. This a great inside scoop of the hit movie.

  1. Michelin travel guides have an excellent and well-deserved reputation, and this little blue street map and index for the city of Paris is in keeping with that reputation. It is arguably the most readable, comprehensive, and complete street map and index for the city in print. This is an essential little book if you plan to spend a lot of time walking around Paris, for business or pleasure.

  2. We used the second edition of this book while walking and driving around Paris during a recent vacation. It fit conveniently in my pocket and was invaluable when navigating the sometimes confusing one way street system. The second edition lacked a metro map, but was complete in every other way!

  3. Excellent for walking, driving, and even taking metro. I purchased the 2000 edition and it's very easy to read and also has a metro map and regional train map. Valuable indexes for all streets, museums, schools, landmarks, etc. as well as for emergency phone numbers. If you're going to Paris and are buying only one book to prepare for the trip (highly unlikely...!), then get this one!

  4. This is an outstanding atlas. The book's size is very convenient, it is easy to carry, and fits nicely into a purse or a coat pocket. The map scale is excellent. All details that a visitor would need such as car parks, metro and RER stops, post offices, churches and every possible building and landmark are clearly marked on each page of the atlas. The detailed maps show all side streets so we never had any fear of getting lost on our walks. There are also separate pages for the bus, metro, and train lines serving the Paris area. The atlas is limited to the central Paris area so a visitor would need additional, larger scale maps of the Paris region if travel plans include driving to the city or around its various extended suburbs. This is the only set of maps you would need if your travel plans include the usual tourist attractions (the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, the Arc de Triomphe, etc). However, this is not a guide book, so you will need a separate tour book of the city.

  1. This is a fairly slim volume of photos and text on many of the major or influencial buildings and monuments in Paris. There are about 2-3 entries per page, with each entry containing a small black-and-white photo and brief text.

The concise text is informative and focused primarily on the architectural history of each structure, usually including the name of the architect and highlighting the significant architectural aspects of the structure. The choices of structures reviewed is a good mix, including both major structures and minor, but influencial, structures.

While I did learn a few things from the book, I would have appreciated a much more in-depth study of each structure. The photos are also often tightly focused on individual structures, making it difficult to understand the structure in relation to its context within the city. The book is organized by time period, rather than geographical location, which also makes it harder to follow the tapestry of each quarter and how the buildings flow into and influence each other.

  1. I purchased this book prior to my trip to Paris. It contains detailed maps for most of popular areas of Paris, and also includes a little bit of information about the famous landmarks. I carried this book with me everywhere and it helped tremendously in finding every address I was looking for. Another nice thing about it is that it is small and easy to tote around. A must for anyone who gets lost easily!

  1. Michel Poisson, a Parisian architect of long-standing, has prepared beautiful line-drawings of more than 500 Parisian monuments. Can there be that many? You bet. And this book proves it: churches, department stores, fountains, bridges, houses, squares, gardens; from Roman remains to post-modern sports stadiums.

Moving systematically through each of the city's twenty arrondissements, each entry comes with at least one meticulous line-drawing (often more), together with brief details of its architectural history. The author also offers valuable additional information where space allows. Hand-drawn maps and plans also abound, and an illustrated index of the architects brings up the rear, together with the expected indices of artists and monuments.

So why is this book flawed? Well, for two reasons. Alas, despite the precision and beauty of the drawings, I could not help feeling that the same book but with colour photographs would be better. And secondly, it is slightly too large for the pocket as you walk the streets of Paris. But, of course, to reduce the size would spoil be to spoil the glorious detail.

Having said that, this volume is a magnificent achievement and beautifully produced: the publishers are to be congratulated in putting together a quality product to match the quality of the drawings. Now all I need is the time to set off with book in hand to view the monuments I have missed, and to see the others with fresh eyes.
