  1. The quality of photography in this book astounded me. Each of the 9 children live in different areas of Paris and, through their photographs and accompanying commentary, one really gets to know Paris.

  1. I recently purchased this book [3/1/2002] and took it with me to Paris to look for nightclubs and other interesting sights. The book did a good job of pointing me to some of the better sights in Paris. Paris has to be seen to believed. I would also recommend getting additional books which focus more on using the metro to get around the city and books on the landmarks and museums. The metro is the key to Paris. It will take you almost anywhere you want to go...

  2. I went to Paris with the 10th Edition rather than the 9th; but unfortunately I cannot write a review there as Amazon still says the book is not yet published. Very quickly I have now used 2 books by Timeout, and this book was far more useful than the one that I used for Florence. Overall I think that Timeout books are well organized, have great pictures, and I esp. like the little areas where they have the "Best of." The difference b/w this book and the one I took to Florence became very apparent as soon as I started pounding the pavement in Paris. The only negatives I would have to say are that the maps are a little difficult to use with the different Arrondisements spread out over diff pages; Timeout publishes a magazine like free city guide that I grabbed while in Paris, and this gave me a nice sized map that I could refer to without constant page flipping. I would also agree with the other reviewer in that the authors did not give a great explanation of the metro system in conjunction with the several transport maps they gave in the back, but it is very easy to use once you get there and do some prac app. Other than those two things, it's a good book; I did not award 5 stars cuz I feel a top rating would mean that the user/book owner did not have to rely on another source.

I highly recommend the macaroons @ Laduree, going to the Eiffel Tower past 9pm(it is open until 11) and the patisserie Au Levain du Marais.

  3. I have been to Paris several times and prefer to come upon restaurants while exploring the city or accept recommendations from locals. Due to the poor exchange rate I've decided to do some research in advance of my next trip. I liked that this book allows me to search by type of food or arrondisement.

  1. Author gives good advice on what to expect in the process of starting a B&B .

  2. We are looking to open a B&B that will support our family. This does not fit the author's defintion of a B&B, and this book is definitely geared toward a smaller operation. If you are looking to open a few rooms in your home to earn some extra income, this book would probably be useful.

  3. Ignore the crabby reviews of this book. I really doubt such people ought to go into a public-contact home-based business!

My copy arrived from a thrift store, the original (1987) edition; I bought it mostly out of curiosity. I consult for entrepreneurs, & Barbara Notarius has come up with a book that manages to be brief yet thorough. As it was written almost 20 years ago, I am pleasantly surprised how useful it could be in answering the questions of someone who hasn't made the leap but is giving it serious thought.

Sure, it's not a turnkey guide!! You still have to enjoy people, especially strangers; you still have to have some grain of business sense (or be ready to hire someone who does); you still have to have a nice residence with some reason for guests to come looking for you; you still ought to retain an attorney to go over all the local licensing, inspection, & tax considerations.

This book is something you can read in a few evenings. It walks you through serious considerations, everything from your emotional temperament & your cleaning habits, to how well you know your own community & what you should make for breakfast -- I'll probably never have a B&B or inn, but I've swiped some of the recipes.

Of course, you ought to get the newest edition you can (it's up to its 4th) if your dead-set on opening a B&B in the near future. But if you find an older copy for a few pennies, it's a very good way to start examining everything from your furnishings to your motivations before you put too much effort or cash into something you aren't suited for.

  4. I gained a lot of knowledge about starting a B&B from this book. The author goes into great detail about everything you need to do or think about before you start this venture. The information is just a little out-dated, but still pertinent.

  1. I have lived in Paris for over two years, but this guide remains my favorite for restaurant ideas, bars, cafés, and days I just want to change my neighborhood. While prices are in francs, and some of the stuff about bar and club trends is a bit dated, it's still the best resource I've found besides word-of-mouth for how to see the City of Lights on a budget. The restaurant suggestions are especially well-chosen.

  1. This is an excellent resource for Paris hotels. Content includes frank, specific information on each property, right down to which rooms to ask for when booking. I rely on Gustafson's advice whenever I travel to a city she's written on. I also recommend her "Great Eats" series. Buy this book and your trip will be better for it!

  2. Excellent, concise hotel info. I have used this book for several years and found it to be correct. Keep going back to one of her recommendations and never am disappointed. Good value for price of hotel is the key here.

  1. I was at a rummage sale last year and noticed someone was selling a bunch of guide books. I saw Fodor's Paris 99 and could not believe they were practically giving it away. I could not stop looking at it when I came home. It is such a complete book on Paris. The beginning covers all your basic info on how to get there and what to take. The rest is filled with good maps. It considers people of all budgets with it's hotel and restaurant listings going from low to expensive. It even has some helpful phrases in the back. I will definitely use it on my trip to Paris.
