  1. Paris Jazz is a concise, well-written read for anyone who loves jazz and Paris. Of particular interest to me was the maps as well as addresses detailing where present day jazz venues may be found. I thought the vintage photos sprinkled throughout the book were a great accompaniment to the histories of storied jazz personalities and their haunts. Also loved the very cool cover design! Deborah Gerwig Powell

  2. I've never been to Paris but am a big jazz fan. Although I have only heard of some of the sites (like the Folies Bergere), I had a good time reading about the history of jazz in Paris and all the crazy anedcotes that Luke Miner includes in the book. If I ever make it to Paris I'll definitely take this along, but in the meantime it makes for a really entertaining read.

  3. Let me start by saying I really liked this book. The stories are great and I actually did use this to explore the old and new jazz sites when I was in Paris last week. The only reason I'm not giving it the final star is because I would have preferred a paperback version: it's easier to carry and I don't feel bad about marking the book up or folding down pages. Please print a cheaper paperback version!

  4. a wonderful little book, almost like a minature encyclopedia of information that is easily available, well presented and designed and I love it.

  5. I would think most jazz fans would have at least some idea of the significance of Paris in the history of jazz, if for no other reason than the number of albums that have been cut there or reference the city in the title. "Paris Jazz: A Guide" does a great job showing just how important Paris has truly been. Organized as a guide to the locations of current and former jazz *caves* in the City of Light, and related points of interest, "Paris Jazz" is also a quick and easily-accessible pocket history of the title subject, from the days of the earliest performances by American soldiers -- mainly African-Americans -- during and after the first world war, until today. A list of a couple dozen recommended recordings, relevant to the text, and a listing of contemporary (if less historic) jazz venues rounds out the slim but info-packed pages. I can definitely see this as a one of a handful of guidebooks worth taking with you to Paris, as well as a worthwhile reference to keep handy at home.

  1. My wife and I just returned from Paris and our copy is tattered from use. We were glad to find a travel guide that whose advice we could rely on, that wasn't trying to get us through our trip on 20 cents a day, and the author did not disappoint. We chose our hotel, restaurants, shopping, museums, nightclubs... pretty much everything out of this guide. Bravo!

  1. There is very little in this book that isn't covered elsewhere in more detail. I bought this book and "The Complete Idiot's Travel Guide to Las Vegas" before a trip to Las Vegas with my two sons. The Complete Idiot's Guide had lots more info including info about kid friendly hotels, things to see, etc. Neither book included information about which hotels let kids stay free which was info that I was looking for.
Las Vegas With Kids includes lots of what to me was worthless information - for example: 5 pages are used to list the airlines that fly into Las Vegas, another 6 pages of websites for hotels, packing lists that list only the obvious (and only for the summer season).
My advice would be to buy a general travel guide to Las Vegas and don't bother with this book.

  2. I thought that this book was an excellent starter when planning a vacation to "Sin City" with the kids. My husband and I were worried that it would be a vacation where we stayed in the hotel for 5 days and swam by the pool. However, we were able to use this book to plan our days. We were able to find local parks, historical sites and some pretty good restaurants. In addition, the book gave us ideas to keep our 8 year old active by trying things that we would not normally have done (i.e., horseback riding, etc.) The book broke down which hotels were "kid friendly" and what amenities were available to us at the hotel. My son was so excited about this vacation that he still talks about it to everyone more than a year later. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who has children and wants to stay away from the casinos.

  3. Although this book is intended for families, the city itself is not/not made not adapted for families at all. This book was useless as the only few things we could do with the kids, we got from friends who'd been there before.

  1. As a part-time resident of Paris, I thought I knew all of the "bons addresses", those hard-to-find shops where you can find that perfect, unique gift for yourself or someone at home. I was wrong! On my next trip to Paris, I'll be looking into a number of the lovely boutiques mentioned in this book. Not only are the addresses provided, complete with compelling descriptions, but there are gorgeous photos that make your mouth water in anticipation of actually visiting these havens of shopping pleasure, if only to browse and take in the beauty of their wares. Bravo to the authors and photographer!

  2. a wonderful book, showing the real character of paris to whet your appetite. as someone who is soon to go to Paris for the first time, i loved this book for doing the legwork for me in finding those little boutiques that add character to your holiday , that i probably would have missed. i'm sure they will lead me to other great little shops and experiences.
