  1. By Bill Marsano. If you were to go to a really well-stocked bookstore and start counting the guidebooks devoted to Paris, there's a fair chance you wouldn't finish on the same day you started. Paris is like the Battle of Gettysburg: Everyone wants to write about it and almost everyone does. (Some more than once.) So while you might consider yourself spoiled for choice, it's more likely that you'll be overwhelmed and baffled.

I can help you out here because I'm almost uniquely qualified to judge. I've used guides, written for guides and even sold guides in a travel bookstore. And from that I conclude that this is the best guide to Paris available, bar none.

Dana Facaros and Michael Pauls have written literally dozens of guides; I first came to know their work in Italy two decades ago. They lived there at the time just as they are now writing guides to France and live there too. It's fair to say that from depth of experience and local perspective, they can't be beat. They are not quick in-and-outers dependent on what the local tourist office is pushing.

Their Paris book has all you'd expect from any decent competitor, of which there are plenty: details and overviews of nightlife, sports, parks, hotels, transport, restaurants, museums, walking tours, festivals, flea markets, shopping. All that and more. What sets it apart--far apart--is the quality and freshness of the writing, which is informed, stylish and witty (the historical notes are especially fine and a delight to read). The reader truly feels guided by this book--taken in hand by an expert (two of them in this case) and given the key to the city. This is a genuinely sophisticated approach to the City of Light. A triomphe, in fact.

If you're going to Paris for a week or more, you may very well wish to embark upon a daytrip beyond the city. For that you must buy "An Hour from Paris," by Annabel Simms (a Brit long resident in Paris). She's a perfect companion to Facaros and Pauls, and almost their equal as a writer. She lists 20 splendid daytrips, most of them little known, all available by public transport, and none more than an hour away.--Bill Marsano is an award-winning travel writer and editor.

  1. The text is lovely, the pictures were somewhat disappointing. Cost is high for the value.

  2. I received In A Paris Moment for Christmas this year and was truly
touched by Ms. Mullins' sensitive portrayal of Paris. It's been a long
time since I traveled to Paris, but fond memories came flooding back as
I looked at these beautiful and mesmerizing photographs. They seem to
capture something much deeper than the usual photographs of Paris life.
The stories, too, made me smile (and made me cry) as the author reveals
a more personal side of Paris (and of herself). I highly recommend this
book for anyone who loves Paris or anyone who simply has a passion for life's truths and beauty. It's a wonderful collection of moments(and a beautifully designed book, as well).

  3. I was very disappointed when I received this book. It is very slim, about sixty pages. There is very little text and the pictures are sometimes out of focus. This was supposed to be a present to someone, but I am too embarrassed to give it to her. I would suggest no one buy this book "blind" like I did. The search inside the book online did not portray how little substance the book contained and the poor quality of the photos.

  4. I just received this book for Christmas and I can't seem to put it down. I now live in Paris and, just when I thought I knew the city, these beautiful photographs and humorous and heart-felt stories make the city even more special for me. Ms. Mullins seems to see things in a different way from the average photographer. It seems she looks beneath the surface and finds moments that are interesting and poignant ... and graphically striking! Her photographs are reminiscent of the great French street photographers--Doisneau and Ronis. I also love the quality of the book, the feel of the pages, the lovely velum opening and closing sheets, and the soft colors of the cover. I highly recommend it as a gift for anyone who loves Paris or anyone who is about to visit and become addicted to its charms.

  5. In a Paris Moment captures the essence, mystery, and surprise of Paris with its breathtaking photos. The quality of the black & white harkens back to the great Paris photographers Doisneau & Brassai. The city looks timeless in the photos. I especially love the portraits.

  1. I'm glad I didnt let Joan M guide my decision to purchase this guide. Obviously, she was looking for a general book on Paris. That's not what this book is. It's for people who want a SPECIFIC experience in ADDITION to the general sites and "how to" get to these places WITHOUT being taxi dependent, especially for first time, non-French speaking travelers. Anyone can show you where the eiffel tower is, for goodness sakes and the internet, while helpful, is no substitute for hand checked, personally examined sites. If you want to know where the Eiffel Tower is, any general guidebook can take you there. But if you want to see a side of Paris that few people are privy, this is the book for you!

  2. This book was a god-send! I travelled solo to Paris with this book in hand but I felt like I had a travel buddy. It felt like Kat as with me the whole time! From using the metro to choosing somewhere to eat! I was CONFIDENT in my travels! I'm looking forward to my return trip to Paris! Thank you KAT!

  3. This is a wonderful resource. Ms. St. Thomas provides a user friendly guide to navigating one's way through the "City of Lights." She's taken the anxiety away from this first time Paris visitor. I appreciate greatly the fact that she includes a range of information from using the Metro, to finding great cuisine. This book is a must have!

  4. Some Paris travel guidebooks (both general and black culture-specific) provide practical and historical information before taking readers on colorful strolls around the world's most beloved city, and that approach is fine. Others take readers on walks through Paris neighborhoods while imparting the information, which is also fine. Because there is room on the savvy traveler's bookshelf for more than one or two kinds of Paris travel guides, I purchased Kat Tracking Through Paris: A Guide to Black Paris, and added it to my bookshelf. This travel guide transports readers directly to the information it offers. I highly recommend it.

Kat Tracking Through Paris provides concise, easily accessible entries that are chock-full of information, and not just about the great touristy monuments and navigating one's way around the City of Light. It also offers information on particular African American, West Indian, and African restaurants; plus selected hotels with reasonable rates (some black-owned, some not), where famous black writers, visual artists, and musicians from history lived. Additionally it gives readers information about famous cafés, some of which were the haunts of writers like James Baldwin, Richard Wright, Poet Ted Joans, and others. It steers travelers who are interested in the nightlife scene to the Hip Hop, Reggae, and R&B clubs. It leads Jazz devotees to a number of historically famous Jazz clubs that are still open and popular today.

I took Kat Tracking Through Paris with me on my most recent visit to Paris. The book's size and format made it convenient for me to either pack it into my carry-on luggage or slip it into my tote bag. I chose to slip it into my tote. While using this guidebook in Paris, I found it expedient not to have to consult an index or wade through superfluous pages in order to locate the exact information I needed. Kat Tracking Through Paris is well organized, full of information, and user friendly. It is a valuable travel resource!

  5. I am wondering what book Joan M read??!! It could NOT have been Kat Tracking Through Paris.....an easy-to-read and even easier-to-follow Guide to Black Paris. As the founder of BLACK PARIS TOURS and an ex-pat who has lived in and loved Paris for 11 years, I recommend reading Kat Tracking to all of my tour clients preparing to come to Paris -- anxious to find and explore the culture and cuisine of contemporary Black Paris. I appreciate the annual updates Kat Tracking provides. I'm amazed when folks come to Paris looking for restaurants and night clubs that have been closed for YEARS. But not if they have read KAT TRACKING first! Kat Tracking Through Paris is the perfect sized, light weight travel companion to throw in your purse or back pocket and hit the streets to adventure, good food and fun in Black Paris!!!!!!

  1. Paris is a perfect city to explore by foot and by public transportation. Using three-dimensional maps and color photographs, this basic guide offers fourteen detailed walks through some of the city's most interesting neighborhoods including Montmartre, the Latin Quarter, St. Germain des Pres, Ile St-Louis and Ile de la Cite, and the Grands Boulevards in the Opera district, with helpful information on where to catch the Metro (Paris's subway), a bus, or a taxi, and reliable recommendations for places to stop and shop, eat, drink, and sightsee along the way. Having completed many of the guided walks included in this guide during a recent visit to Paris, I can highly recommend this book for the first-time visitor to Paris not interested in wandering too far off the beaten path.

  2. I bought this guide the day before I left for Paris, mainly due to the crisp bird's-eye illustrations of the different walking routes. I rented a bike and was able to do 7 of the walks. However, I don't recommend doing some of the walks like the Ile de Cite one on a bike due to one-way streets. I was particularly impressed with the Left Bank Impressions walk with nice boutiques, galleries and outdoor snack stands along the way. The Latin Quarter walk, the Marais walk and the Island Hopping walks were similarly impressive. Every street corner was worthy of a picture. The authors definitely researched these walks thoroughly and I highly recommend this guide to first-time and returning visitors to Paris to get their bearings on this marvelous city.

  3. We've been to Paris several times - and are going again soon. We walk, bus, Metro our way around and love expoloring. I bought this book based on other reviews. They were right on. This is well done, well written, easy to follow, provides loads of details and great maps. I am looking forward to using it on our next trip.
