  1. I thought this book would be a little different than it actually was. There are some good sections that kept the "what happened next" factor but more often than not, it is just the tale of some guy on a hike and there's really not a whole book's worth of information to tell about a guy alone on a hike. I read it all the way through thinking 'ok something's gonna happened' but it just never did. No great revelations, no tug at your heart moments with nature, and no real excitement.
I'm sure it was exciting for the guy living it, it's just not as interesting to read about it.

There are some interesting characters he meets along his journey but, to me, they all came off kind of the same - backwoodsy and kind of disconnected from the reality most of us live in everyday. It is an older book though so maybe a few years back, it wasn't so different from the norm but I think it's more likely that it was jsut as different from "normal reality" then as it is now.

I didn't totally dis-enjoy it, it was something different to read, but for review purposes, I'd say, look to a different title if you want to read about some kind of "epic journey".

  1. Basically, it's a map of Portland, in book form. It's similar to a Thomas Guide, but slimmer. As I recall, it was easy to read and use. It did help me make my way around Portland when I visited for a few days. Not much else to say about it. It does the job.

  2. I have used two , three of these great books. So much easier to use than Thomas. My family steals mine from my car. Need a new one, mine is shredded.
