1 comments about Hiking Oregon Three Sisters.
- We recently used this guide in selecting a short day hike. The loop we selected came across as very straightforward so we took off without consulting additional maps. We were annoyed to find ourselves off the loop twice after coming to trail junctions not included in the guide map. Upon returning home we looked at another guide book we had considered 'out of date', only to find that both trail junctions where we had been misled were clearly marked.

1 comments about Exploring the Tualatin River Basin: A Nature and Recreation Guide.
- Exploring the Tualatin River Basin is an unimaginably good example of the kind of guide that should be available for all parts of the world. Living in Beaverton, Oregon, we only recently (2008) re-discovered this gem and have used it to plan short rainy-weekend excursions. The descriptions, directions and photographs are outstanding. The book has inspired us to explore our home environs as we never have done before. Our compliments to the authors and photographers who have created a motivating guide to our own home river basin.

3 comments about A Waterfall Lover's Guide to the Pacific Northwest: Where to Find Hundreds of Spectacular Waterfalls in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.
- This is an amazing book on locating the beautiful waterfalls of the Pacific Northwest. I own 2 of these books, 2nd and 3rd edition, and let me tell you, it has never let me down.
The book gives great detail and levels of the waterfalls quality, difficultly of the hike and much more. It even teaches you on how to determine the type of waterfall that you are viewing. Mr. Plumb is the ultimate Mountaineer, and shows it through this amazing book. I call it my, "Waterfall Bible". I highly recommend it for all your searches for waterfalls, and even some that you didn't know existed -- great for picinics, extremists, photographers, and for those just in awe of their beauty! Don't pass this up, and at such a great price!
- Great book, we had never been in these areas and were able to find everything very easily.
- Used this book exclusively on my recent "waterfall tour" of Oregon and Washington. I wanted to make the most of day hikes to areas that had waterfalls. This book allowed me to plan my day-to-day itineraries and cram the most into the trip. Invaluable for a true waterfall lover. Waterfalls listed by geographical areas. Descriptions of some trailheads hard to follow, but maps were good. Decribes the difficulty to reach each fall (easy to need to be a bushwacking expert).
My only disappointment is the newly built bridge near Elowah Falls that ruins the natural beauty of the falls... (not the author's fault).

1 comments about Oregon Wine Country.
- If you want an easy to read overview of Oregon wineries, this book is it. It's organized by both viticultural areas and by wine types. The book strikes a nice balance between enough information to be useful but not so much you that won't finish it. The photos are striking and show the breadth of the Oregon wine industry. A nice touch are the side bars introducing the winemakers and pioneers of Oregon wine. If you're into Oregon wine, I highly recommend it.

1 comments about That Ribbon of Highway: Highway 99 from the Oregon Border to the State Capital.
- "That Ribbon of Highway" wonderfully captures the memory of those times when travel along "the Main Street of California" was indeed an adventure, before Interstate 5 made travel through the state a matter of speeding from origin to destination with the only experience with the outside world involving, say, a quick stop at the drive-through window at yet another stamped-out McDonald's. As the author points out, of the three major north/south highways in California, Highway 101 may have been more romantic, Highway 395 more mysterious, but it was Highway 99 that truly served as "the peoples' highway," and thus is arguably more important in a historical scope.
I like this book a lot. The author and photographer have wonderfully captured the historical spirit of Highway 99. I give it four stars instead of five only because I don't want to build the expectations of this book too much. It isn't a big, coffee table-sized tome filled with large glossy full-color photos and expansive essays. Rather, it's more a small, "night stand" sized volume, with black and while photos and brief treatments of the various points of interest along the stretch of the highway between the Oregon border and Sacramento. However, the modest format of the book likely compliments memories of those pre-Interstate 5 days more adeptly than would a Time/Life version of the subject; this little book goes gentle on the memories of our hearts by bringing them to the fore rather than revising them with someone else's vision. For those readers who treasure the memories of a time when travel by road seemed a richer, more colorful experience, I heartily recommend this enjoyable little book. HJ

1 comments about Garden Touring in the Pacific Northwest: A Guide T.
- This book provides good, solid reviews of the major public gardens complete with driving instructions, hours, amenities and "best times to view". Oregon, Washington and Vancouver are covered. It would be quite useful for a gardening enthusiast new to the area or to someone new to gardening. Unfortunately, most gardens covered are already familiar to gardeners who have lived here for a few years.
