  1. Readers would be advised to buy a map of Oregon and explore campsites on their own rather than buy this overpriced book.

The author at times tries for a latter day version of Travels with Charley, but doesn't pull it off. The editors of this guide allowed too many pictures which are either irrelevent to the reader or are unfocussed.

  2. After purchasing our travel trailer, we purchase several camping books for Oregon. This was the best of the bunch, easy to follow by region, `tree' rating, and a good description of what you'll actually experience at the campground. A great reference; and a must for anyone wanting to explore Oregon's campgrounds.

  1. This book is informative and entertaining. Unfortunately, it is poorly written (many non-sentences and incorrect grammar). That and the numerous typos are distracting.

  1. This is a useful little guidebook, rating segments of the Timberline Trail and showing an elevation profile for each segment. Nice for those of us who prefer to select our trail segments with more downs than ups when possible! Each segment has a concise summary of what you can expect to find in terms of scenery and river crossings (not to be taken lightly on Mt Hood; these aren't little babbling mountain brooks, they're raging torrents that can roll hundred pound boulders with ease). For those who are doing car shuttles, each trail is also described for clockwise and for counterclockwise hiking (relative to the entire circle of the mountain). This also creates the only disadvantage to the book, that is, it's twice as long as it needs to be due to repeating the same information in reverse sequence. Backpackers would do well to photocopy only the relevant portion and leave the book at home. The authors also suggest the preferred direction for each trail segment, which is useful. This book is worth the price.

  1. Whether you live in Portland or are visiting for an extended time or have just moved, this is an excellent guide to the Rose City. Everything from shopping, restaurants, recreation, sites of interest, etc. You name it, this book covers it. Want to find a new place to go out to dinner? Look here. Want to figure out where to take a visiting friend from out of town? Look here. This is an excellent guide to all aspects of living, working, and playing in Portland. The one shortcoming this book has is that it has very limited coverage of the surrounding metro area. If it's not in Portland, it's probably not in this book.

  2. I recently visited Portland for the Fourth of July weekend and this book along with {Best Places Portland} were my constant companion. Extensive information regarding EVERYTHING from Shopping, Restaurants, Lodging to detailed information on each neighborhood.

If you are looking to visit Portland and need a Visitor Guide, Grab your highlighter! and get a map. I carried this one with me constantly. The only flaw I could find in this one is that it didn't seperate the restaurants by Meal Type ie; Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

    Respectfully Reviewed

  3. In a nice pleasant format this guide delivers what it promises, describes what's to be seen, where to go, what to expect, and helps you get around in Portland. Should be a memorable trip. Can't wait.

  1. I've not been disappointed with any of the books I've read in the Compass Guides series. This book, like the rest, is written by a very knowledgeable native.
